    Volunteer Ireland Awards
    The Volunteer Ireland Awards is an awards program that makes a difference. It aims to shine a light on the remarkable work of volunteers around the country by celebrating them on a national level. The Volunteer Ireland Awards are a unique opportunity to say ‘thank you’ to ordinary people doing extraordinary work across the country. President Michael D. Higgins is Patron of the Awards. The 2018 Volunteer Ireland Awards will open for nominations on Thursday 23rd August 2018.

    Each year, people from all over Ireland are encouraged to nominate someone they know who gives their time and energy voluntarily. There are 10 categories, reflecting different facets of volunteering work:

    Animals and Environment

    Arts, Culture and Media

    Campaigning and Awareness Raising

    Children and Youth

    Community

    Health and Disability

    Safety and Emergency Services

    Social Work and Social Inclusion

    Sports and Recreation

    Outstanding Group

    A two-year-old boy who went missing in woods in western Japan has been found unharmed after three days alone, apparently surviving on river water as volunteers hunted desperately for him.

    Yoshiki Fujimoto disappeared on Sunday morning in the Yamaguchi region while out walking with his brother and grandfather, and the search for him made headlines nationwide.

    Police and locals combed the woods looking for him, but it was a 78-year-old volunteer from a neighbouring region who stumbled upon the toddler on Wednesday morning.

    "I shouted 'Yo-chan'," Haruo Obata told local television, a red towel wrapped around his head against the summer heat.

    "He replied 'yes, here' and there he was," added Mr Obata, a retiree who said he regularly volunteers in disaster relief efforts.

    The toddler was sitting on a rock, with his bare feet in a small puddle of water in front of him, Mr Obata said.

    "At first, I didn't think it was a human." he told reporters. "But there he was. I thought my heart was going to stop."

    The toddler's survival is all the more astonishing given the hot weather in Japan in recent weeks, with local media saying the temperature where he went missing hit 34C during his three-day ordeal.

    This is obviously an exceptional set of circumstances and exceptional person but there are thousands of volunteers who do their part in searches, keeping people safe and helping people in general throughout the country. It's nice to see such a moment and there are so many unsung volunteer heroes around Ireland and the world.
