    Reading about a case today and people think that it’s disgraceful u can get cancer after screening. Do they think it’s black and white.
    I thought after cervicalcheck it was accepted that screening can’t find every cancer. And a solicitor getting someone to review a slide when the reviewer now knows the person has cancer.

    But people seem to be taking cases so is just now at the stage people will sue even tho screening isn’t perfect.

    I think RTE were in the vanguard of declaring a scandal over false negatives, without ever understanding the nature and limitations of screening programmes. I was totally unimpressed with the alleged "Health Correspondent" who stirred it even further every evening on the News.

    That sets it out well. I hadn’t seen that before.
    A political editor of independent this week was saying how much of a scandal it is that the HSE didn’t settle with a woman who died RIP. But how can they settle if there’s no fault. Her case was that 1 out of 6 smears was read wrong. It seems weak. So tragic she died but might not be anyone’s fault.

    The actual issue, IIRC is that they used an american lab which had a lower threshold and relied on the patient getting screened every 6 months to be more effective. The Irish labs were more through as they knew there was a longer gap between screens.

    I don't agree with the suing as there is always a risk it is missed but there was alot of fault at the feet of the HSE and government that they went for the cheaper option without even checking was it the same option. It was a gross failure on the part of procurement.

    Interpreting photos might be one where AI has a valid use case.

    But it still needs good quality training material and the human reading can't be done on the cheap and I'd imagine a for-profit organisation would try to speed up things to increase throughput.

    Recently done a basic course on AI and medical screening, specifically I wrote up a short review on using it for retinopathy screening. I found the deep learning AI to be quite cool as it didn't have preconceptions or parameters, it learned parameters it devised itself based on historically reviewed data. Really interestingly it found new parameters which hold up to scrutiny that years of experts had missed.
