Maria Mulvaney standing in Raheny for FG is a cyclist (and cough cough triathlete) and competed in and finished Ras na mBan.

It's your problem if you don't understand your local council and don't try influence it, not ours.

Nah, I understand them all too well. I don't ascribe qualities like reason and common sense to them. Self-importance is about their best quality and most of them fancy a shot at the big house. Invariably the CEO of said council has to be the adult in the room and actually make decisions.

That councillors are generally very poor and of no great use to us? It is pretty obvious if you actually look. It doesn't mean they can't do lil thing like this or stuff that makes individual voters think their cares are being addressed.

anyway, as mentioned earlier, andrew montague is one of my local councillors, and has good history when it comes to cycling, probably more than any other councillor. plus, he's a very nice chap, for whatever that's worth.

    Vote for different candidates so?

    And actually a good councillor!:D

he's running in cabra/glasnevin/phibsborough area. means i can't vote for him, but i do have andrew montague to vote for at least.

Yes Andrew proposed and pushed for the Dublin Bike scheme. I've seen him cycling into the Omni (rather him than me st that junction!).. He will be standing in the new Ballymun/Finglas LEA

i suspect the liffey cycleway and issues surrounding busconnects and cycling will throw some light on councillor's attitudes to cycling.

anyway, this chap is local to me:

I'm at a bit of a loss as to who to vote for in Kimmage Rathmines, if anyone could give any pointers? Not Mary Freehill anyway.

Don't know if he's running in any local elections at the moment, but Paddy Smyth is very pro-cycling has been involved in getting quiet ways / grey ways setup. Don't know much else about his politics but he's our family doctor and I've always found him to be a decent skin.

    "tell your cycling buddies ..."

Time to convene the Grand Cyclist Council and instruct members not to vote for this ... member.

    "tell your cycling buddies ..."
I wonder if this pillock is telling anyone who asks him a motoring question to do something similar.

It is interesting how other people with a motor centric attitude see cyclists as some sort of fraternity. I often have people say in work or social situations “I saw one of your cycling buddies do x,y or z”. Bizarre.

In my efforts to improve our image, I’ve been diligently taking names and details anyway on my morning commute of errent cyclists who will be summonsed to be brought in front of the grand secret agm we have every year and deal with them then.

Tell your driving buddies to stop drinking and driving.

It's just as much horsesh1t as what he said.

True, I’m never quick enough to retort “hey, saw one of your motoring buddies break the red lights at benburb street and hit the luas. Bummer for the thousands inconvenienced on their way home”. Must be quicker the next time

Got to admire the man's honesty though! I mean, at least he didn't start nodding his head and telling you how he cycles with the grandkids every weekend etc, telling you what he knew you wanted to hear.

That said, pretty sure I could feel some brain matter oozing out of my ear by the time I finished reading his comments.

Had come onto the thread to post this

I've sent a query into the Minister for Transport (seeing he has endorsed O'Neill) asking does he endorse these views also?

Richmond again makes the case for you not to vote for him

I had a quick look at his twitter. He just seems like an awful person with little or no self awareness whatsoever. His Tweet to Ashley Young about Arthur Ashe is just cringe worthy too.

He's not running again it seems.

    Dear Keith,

Oh dear. Local elections coming up and you post something like this?

I see boards.ie has taken note on the 'Upcoming Local Elections and
    Cycling' thread...

    Keith Redmond isn't standing again.

Paddy Smyth is not standing again - he's a busy doctor. Presumably he thought he could improve the health of his patients by getting safe cycling space in his area so the damage from car fumes and obesity would be less; he's going back to being a GP and not trying to improve our city.

For Crumlin-Kimmage these are the councillors:

    https://www.dublincity.ie/councilmeetings/mgFindMember.aspx?XXR=0&AC=WARD&WID=13090

For Rathgar-Rathmines (which includes parts of Harold's Cross and I think Kimmage)

    https://www.dublincity.ie/councilmeetings/mgFindMember.aspx?XXR=0&AC=WARD&WID=13088

of these, Pat Costello and Claire O'Connor tend to be open-minded about cycling infrastructure; I think all of the others would be motorheads.

Incidentally, lots of people don't know they can vote in local elections. If you are (or know people who are) either EU citizens or non-EU residents of Ireland, you might tell them to download the voter registration form here

    http://checktheregister.ie/PublicPages/Default.aspx?uiLang=

and bring it to a garda station, making sure to bring photo ID with you; then post it to the Franchise Section of your local council (for Dublin City that's Franchise Section, Dublin City Council, Block 4, Floor 4 of the Civic Offices, Wood Quay, Dublin 8, D08 RF3F)
