Bogus Roofers

Folks, Just a warning about Roofers or so called roofers going around to scam elderly folks by cold calling to the door asking to clean the gutters or inspect the roof and then telling the householder that there is 100s or 1000s worth of damage to be repaired when the roof is perfectly fine. It's a well organised scam and these people look the part with flyers that look professional looking and also a website that looks genuine. They were in the Artane area last week and have a country accent.

That's not a country accent. Is the accent of a specific Irish "ethnic" minority and sure isn't it their culture to be scamming fixing gutters or putting down a bit of tarmac

A surprising number of these 'companies' use Fairview Strand as their business address.
    Beware.

    The scam goes...
    Target elderly or naive person.
Clean your gutters for x euro? (unsolicited)
    Punter agrees.
    Poke up ladder
You know you have a broken slate/missing ridge tile/something wrong with chimney?
Ends up amounting to many hundreds of euro.
Strong arm accompanying of elderly person to ATM.

Very professional looking leaflets. Many website addresses.

    What's a country accent?

Unfortunately this happened to an elderly neighbour of mine, second time around another neighbour saw them back for more and photographed the van, sent it onto the Garda, this is around Crumlin.
Poor man lost 1500 in a distraction burglary. Those who prey on vulnerable elderly people are as sick as paedophiles in my book

Do they actually clean the gutters or do any actual work on the roof? And when they hand over for example 2 broken tiles from the roof are these ones they break off themselves or for they pull them out behind the owners back and bring them around with them? I would love to know their modus operandi. As someone said it's a despicable crime to take advantage of the elderly.

General rule of thumb is anyone knocking on your door selling services of this kind are out to scam you. Either it's an excuse to scope out an area to see what's worth stealing, a reason to knock on doors to see if a house is empty, distract you to steal shít from your garage out the back or to scam you with poor roof/gutter work.
Just warn your grandparents or any old folks in the area.

Sounds like the Travellers who regularly call up to my mothers house.

They always say they are "working" in the area and they will look at the roof for free or very little money because they have "tiles left over from a job" that they need to get rid of.

Why? So you can do the same?

    If they are around,

    1) call the Gardaí, (don't tell them they're travellers - as they may avoid doing their job)

    2) tell them they may be perverts or something

    3) record the phone call to the gardaí, tell them this and get the name of the garda you are talking to and a time when they will be around - for proof they know about this

    4) the gardaí could easily lift these scum off the street, by just enforcing the law or actually checking if they have outstanding warrants or even just by checking their vehicle tax and licence are up to date or actually exist.

    5) photograph them, there is a facebook page called Irish justice I believe?, don't let the gardaí weasel out of their job and do not ever allow travellers onto your property or any thugs like this.

Fair play for the warning to vulnerable folk out there. Ironically its supposedly the 'vunerable' who yet again up to their carnie tricks. Sick to death of hearing about the chaos and the soft (blind) touch taken by authorities.

Spot on with point number 1. Make sure to call it in an hour or two into the shift rota. That way they can’t fob it off on to another Garda due in on a shift starting 10 mins later

And hope for a result like this:
    https://www.irishtimes.com/news/crime-and-law/courts/district-court/roofer-convicted-of-scamming-3-000-from-woman-84-1.2497046

The use of foreign labourers seems to be a common factor, along with Fairview Strand 'offices'.

Irish Roofers, irishroofers.ie Patrick 01-856-9145, mobile 086-062-8561, stating they're in Stoneybatter. This roofer totally scammed us! Three years ago, April 2017, we had a small leak inside as a result of a cracked flashing in the valley. They came, took photos of the valley, said it'll cost about 300 euros for the valley, but our ridges were cracking away and needed new cement, and the felt flat roof needed to be replaced all together. They quoted 3,000 euros for all this, as it was said it was a "deal" as any other roofer would charge 8,000 euros. They did a "patch" job in the valley, but didn't touch it, slapped cement under the roofing tiles angling them into the roof and not away from it, and threw buckets of gravel on the flat roof.

Then, our valley leaked again, and now our flat roof leaked. We called them back again and again - no answer, then our number was blocked. We called another roofer who said we'd been had, and that Irish Roofers was NOT a good roofing company as it was not registered with the National Tradesmen Guild, although they copped the logo on their flier.

Subsequently, we've called 10 different roofing companies, half of which are registered, and the ones registered gave us about the same amount in quotes. The others were high cowboy estimates of 5,000, 8,000 and up to fix the same roof (of which the other half were about only 1,800-3,000). What's going on here????

Where are the honest guys who care about their work, and want to help home owners?
