I presume this has been touched on before but I went down 6 pages and didn't see a thread.

My Mother has a Samsung (A50) on the way to replace her ailing iPhone 6, has anyone been through a similar switch and how easy is it?
    • She uses Google Photos on the iPhone so that's not a problem.
    • I believe backing up Whats App messages is very convoluted on iOS or has anything changed on that front?
    • Can Samsung Smart Switch be downloaded and used on any Samsung handset? (I presume that will take care of a lot of stuff if it can be used).
    • And I know you've to turn off iMessage and FaceTime on the iPhone before switching so you'll receive messages from other iPhone users that would have been iMessage previously.
    • Anything else I'm missing?

    Thanks.

Transferring contacts from iPhone to android can be awkward

There is no native way to backup and transfer WhatsApp history between iOS / Android so you need 3rd party software, bit of a pain.

For contacts, just sync them with her Google account on the iPhone, and then once on Android they'll copy over.

Does Smart Switch not do the contacts anyway once you turn off iCloud sync for them on the iPhone?

Probably, I've never used those Switcher / Transfer apps and prefer to just sync everything in the cloud over multiple devices.

For whatsApp, you can use https://www.wazzapmigrator.com/ - it's a bit fiddly but will transfer everything over. (Why they don't offer this in the app, in 2019 is beyond me)

Must be an Apple-side thing that's it's not possible as it would be strange to have it built-in on Android and not iOS.

i recently went through this and it is nothing but a PITA to do.

I ended up deleting my whattsapp messages, there are apps out there but you will have to pay for the chore

    shame,

a week or two after i realised i could have taken a few screen shots of some messages and kept them on a file, too late though

There is also this feature: https://web.whatsapp.com/

You can look at this and browse your messages more easily, and possibly screenshot from a PC>

    good luck,

I believe it's because they don't provide the backup storage themselves (iOS is via iCloud and Android is Google Drive).

iOS to Android is much easier / user friendly / free (https://www.wazzapmigrator.com/faq/windows-how-extract-chatstoragesqlite) but Android to iOS is a little tricker and the apps are kinda **** / paid (https://www.backuptrans.com/tutorial/transfer-whatsapp-messages-from-android-to-iphone.html)

Main issue with these 3rd party programs is you are trusting them with an un unencrypted backup of your chat logs.

Wazzap migrator worked like a charm.
