A new comedy club is opening in Sligo this week. It's in The Garavogue Bar on Stephen's Street.

    The line-up looks pretty good:

Christian Talbot - Was shortlisted among only five comedians for a competition to perform at the Secret Policeman's Ball in New York's Radio City Music Hall.

Alan Porter - Was a semi-finalist in the So You Think You're Funny competition, whose previous winners include Tommy Tiernan, Dylan Moran, David O'Doherty and Peter Kay.

Jake Bourke - Hosts a podcast on the Irish comedy scene with Christian Talbot, Seven2Ten.

Paul Marsh - Won the first Capital Comedy Club competition, which had over 170 contestants.

    Anyone gonna go?

You think it'll draw a crowd the first night at least? Nothing worse than an empty comedy club, for both the audience and the guys onstage.

Here are some clips from what was a very successful Global Frackdown event on Saturday September 22nd. Some great performances from the likes of Cathy Jordan, Seamie O Dowd and Rick Epping. Fair play to those artists and the members of Kila and Brian Leyden amongst others for supporting the anti-fracking movement.

    Well, how did it go?

Was planning to go after the samba class but we went for a few pints in the Swagman instead. After all the drumming my ears were ringing so I probably wouldn't have heard any of the jokes.

I too would be interested in hearing how it went.

To mark World Vegan Day (albeit two days late!), there will be a screening of documentary on radical animal activism, "Behind The Mask", in the Open Trades Club (downstairs at the Adelaide Bar).

Sharing the evening is the launch of "Anti-Speciesist Action", the debut collection of poetry by Tina Cubberley. Also featuring is a talk by long-term animal advocate and sociology lecturer Roger Yates, and rounding off the night on a high note, none other than DJ Dilly Dream!!

Vegan food will be provided, and all this for a mere €8 admission. This also covers a copy of "Anti-Speciesist Action" for each guest. Kicks off at 8PM, come early!

See a trailer for the film at http://www.uncagedfilms.com/trailer.php

Get your 1920s glad rags on! FILM FATALE presents 'Some Like it Hot' with cabaret afterward ... https://www.facebook.com/events/118404454983498/

Film Fatale, Ireland’s most glamorous film event, is delighted to announce its first event in Sligo’s The Model as part of the North West Film and Music Festival on 16th November. This screening of Some Like it Hot — one of the world’s most beloved comedies — stars the silver screen’s most famous platinum blonde, Marilyn Monroe, in her most sizzling role as Sugar Kane.

This will be a night of cinema nostalgia and old–style Hollywood glamour that will transport the audience back to the 1920s for an evening of film, vintage music, cocktails, dancing and good old-fashioned fun.

Opening the festivities, chanteuse Derby Browne will reprise her role from 2010’s National Concert Hall show 'Let's Make Love' for a Marilyn-inspired tribute. The show will include songs from Some Like it Hot, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, There's No Business Like Show Business and Let's Make Love, alongside Marilyn’s famous rendition of ‘Happy Birthday Mr President’.

The screening of Billy Wilder’s hilarious comedy will be followed by a 1920s party mirroring the film’s setting with Film Fatale’s resident DJs, The Andrews Sisters’ Brothers, playing hits from the era and dance floor fillers from the 30s, 40s, 50s and 60s. The audience is invited to help set the scene by dressing up in their vintage finest, paying homage to the 1920s or dressing like Marilyn and her co-stars Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon.

One of Hollywood's most treasured classics and the American Film Institute's number one film in its list of America's 100 Funniest Movies, Some Like It Hot stars Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon as Chicago musicians who accidentally witness a gangland shooting and quickly board a southbound train to Florida, disguised as Josephine and Daphne.

The two become the newest and homeliest members of an all-girl jazz band, which includes a never-better Marilyn Monroe. While Curtis falls for Monroe and creates another alias to woo her, Lemmon gets stuck fending off the affections of millionaire Osgood Fielding III. Marilyn Monroe’s charm, perfectly matched by the pairing of Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon’s comic duo, makes Some Like It Hot Billy Wilder’s most sizzling comedy.

Sit back, enjoy a classic signature cocktail designed especially for the night, as the Film Fatale usherettes serve you popcorn while watching Billy Wilders most side-splitting comedy. Then dance the night away to ‘ I Want to be Loved by You’.

The North West Film Festival, formerly Sound and Vision Festival, will run from 14th to 25th November in The Model, Sligo, with a fantastic mix of documentaries, feature film premieres, rare archive, live scores and extra special guests.

Tickets €14 are available at themodelsligo/ Doors from 7.30pm.

Vintage party from 11pm with tickets at the door (€5)
