Hello, has anyone heard of a woman getting a hysterectomy under the age of 30? If so could you tell me the circumstances, the doctor that granted it and if it was in ireland or outside of ireland? To cut a long story short a friend feels its her only option and doctors won't listen to her due to her age! The conditions she has are effecting her health and life and because of one of the conditions she is infertile anyway! Any advise would be appreciated

Yes, a friend had one due to a genetic test that made her highly susceptible to a certain cancer. And a colleague had one in her late 20’s due to severe uterine prolapse after having her children.

Both had children. I am assuming your friend has not.

A hysterectomy is no joke, the side effects of that can be serious. If the ovaries are removed you go straight into menopause. Insomnia, hot flashes, Loss of bone density, hair loss, sexual differences. Hormones can change and sometimes lead to depression.

If your friend is not being taken seriously by a doctor, she should of course change dr, look for one that specialises in women’s medicine, or ask for a referral to a gynaecologist.

Somebody that I knew was in a serious car accident in a regional location. Was taken to a tiny country hospital and woke up with a hysterectomy and both(!!) ovaries removed. At 23.

She was incredibly persistent. Went to the US. Selected an egg donor and a gestational surrogate and is now the mother of teenage twins. Both girls.

Big decision for your friend. But sometimes the best option.

Thanks for your reply pwurple, my friend has no other option but this. At the moment as she has no life dealing with the side effects of the numerous conditions she is facing at the moment. She has been to see a gynaecologist but is not being listened to due to her age, even though she has been told she is in fact infertile!! Do you know the name of the doctors/consultants or the hospital your friends dealt with?

A friend got a full hysterectomy for severe endometrioses last year aged 27. She had to travel to the UK for it, a hospital in London I believe. Her consultants here agreed it was the best course of action for her, the equipment needed to perform the surgery is available in Ireland but they didn't have the resources to do it here. So she had to travel.

    Another endometriosis case.

God love her she really wanted children. She was on hormones to bring on the menopause to "dry it all up" got fibroids all removed more hormones to increase fertility in an attempt to get pregnant.

There was a few cycles of this. She was pretty much tied to a toilet as everything was heavy, she also would have a basin in her lap for vomiting.

    She documented absolutely everything.

Unfortunately she had to have a hysterectomy, she tried everything and obviously couldn't live the way she was. Think she was 25-27 at the time.

No, unfortunately I don’t. Our conversations were largely about her strong desire to be a mother - not about where her hysterectomy had happened. If she had been taken to a large teaching hospital she may have been left with her fertility intact.
