Don't buy Irish 2nd hand cars attitude

    as the title says I see this attitude popping up in here quite regularly. The main reason given is that we as a nation are very poor at servicing and maintenance. Personally I have never had anything other than second hand vehicles varying in age from one year old up to buying at eleven years old and everything in between depending on my preferences and circumstances at the time. I have never encountered any major issues that would be caused by lack of maintenance.

    My question, is this attitude/viewpoint warranted?

    I think it gets confused with - don't buy a neglected car secondhand.
    There are good and bad used cars here, same as there are in the uk. The percentages are worse here no doubt but if someone tells a bit of time to ensure they get a car with good history etc, they are fine.
    people buy from used car cowboys, cars without history and without doing any checks and then are surprised when they get a heap of crap.

    Condition and history > milage and year.

    Unfortunately irish people buying tend to flip that around.

    This gets over stated a bit imo. There is no comparison between a low mileage car and a high miler even if the high mileage one is well kept.

    My previous car was bought with nearly 100k on the clock and was well kept (6 years old when bought)

    My current car was bought with 40k miles (6 years old also when bought) and its chalk and cheese. Last car was looser, more worn inside and out, things started to need repair due to more wear and tear and after a few years the mileage got very big and car was worth nothing when being sold.

    Current car still hasn't crossed 80k miles after 4 years driving it, still tight, interior still showing little or no wear etc and basically no maintenance other then regular servicing (so far touch wood). I'll move it on before it gets to 90k miles or less even and won't be looking at anything with more than 60k miles or less preferably when changing. Current car will also lose very little value compared to previous one which is another major plus.
