    Hi Everyone,

I'm wondering if anyone knows where Horseman's Row is or was. I think it is/was around the Parnell St area but I am unable to find it on any maps old/new that I have looked on.

Also would anyone have heard of Riddler's Row. Its around the same area I think.

My g.g.g. grandparents were from here.

    Thanks

Horseman's Row is centred on this map: http://maps.osi.ie/publicviewer/#V1,715551,734821,7,9. It seems to have been absorbed into the ILAC centre.

At its southern end (still in the ILAC) it meets Riddall's Row. I'd guess that is what you have as Riddler's Row.

It seems that your g.g.g..grandparents were mall rats.

Haha- yeah it seems that way :) Hey that's a great map- thanks :)

That bloody Ilac was built right over all the streets my ancestors lived on. Shame.

    Thanks :D.

The people I am researching were 'dealers in old clothes' according to the census. The photo fits :)

Don't suppose you would know if it is possible to find out anything about the shop that my ancestors had on Horseman's Row ? Would there be info on businesses or anything like that ?

My GGG Grandparents lived on Norfolk Market (amongst many other addresses) in the late 1850s and it is right under the ILAC Centre, too!

@30Min Have you tried Thoms Directories? The shop may be listed in the Commerical Directory and/or the Street Directory.

I've heard of the Thom's directory. Do you know how I could access this ? Are they online or in any libraries ?

What dates and name in Horseman's Row are you researching ?

I had a quick look at Thom's 1904, and unfortunately Horseman's Row is not listed in the Street Listing - some of the smaller street are not detailed in this section.

The Alphabetical List of Street shows Horseman's Row as being off Great Britain Street and it's mentioned in the listing for Gt. Britain Street between numbers 47 and 48

    Hey Shane,

My ggg grandfather died in 1876 and his address was listed as 14 Horseman's Row. His occupation was provision dealer. I don't whether he would have had a kind of a shop or whether he would have had a spot on the street. I think he operated out of Horseman's Row or Cole's Lane.

Then I found a census record for his daughter and in 1901 she is living in my ggg grandfathers house on Horseman's Row and she has listed her job as shop keeper.

I'm thinking maybe she took over from his line of work. I'd love to know if they had a shop in that area :)

The 1862 Thom's is searchable online, and Horseman's Row is included: http://www.libraryireland.com/Dublin-Street-Directory-1862/88.php. The street-numbering goes up as far as 12, but I think numbering systems back then were a bit variable. If your ancestor was Luke Corcoran, then we have a hit. Note he had two businesses.

Your other location, Riddall's Row is also there: http://www.libraryireland.com/Dublin-Street-Directory-1862/134.php. There are 28 numbered premises - every one a victualler. Talk about a specialised market!

    ....

    Thom's 1872
1 to 12 Horseman's Row - Tenements (no details given)

Coles's Lane - mostly tenements, but also a broker, marine stores, rag & bone yard, green grocer, marine dealer, vintner and Factory (Sam Gatchell & Sons)
Provision dealers (and related) - Patrick Byrne, green grocer at 16
James Farrell, provision dealer at no. 32
