Harpur Family History (Hasleyrath/Enniscorthy, Co.Wexford)

A couple of days ago at a family reunion me and my family got talking about the Harpur family, and about how unknown it is to us. Today I looked up my grandfathers name (Nicholas) and where he was born on the 1911 Census... I did not find my grandfather, but instead I did find my great grandfather.

I already knew he had one sister called Cathleen (who wasn't born at the time of the census), who would be my great-aunt, but I now know more about his direct relations, but I'm still eager to learn more about my family. I'm going to list out every known member of his direct family about so if there are any Harpurs who either had parents, aunty's, uncles, grandparents or even distant cousins that had the same names as the people on this list, could they please tell me what they know about the family....

I know it's a long shot, but hey, it's worth a try.

They were from Hasleyrath, Co. Wexford.
There ages listed here were their ages in 1911.

Nicholas Harpur, 38
Johanna Harpur, 30
John Harpur, 9
Mary Harpur, 7
Michael Harpur, 3
Johanna Harpur, 2
Margaret Harpur, 0

My grandfather, Nicholas Harpur, was not yet born in 1911, and neither was my great-aunt Cathleen.

Have a look at the below link from the LDS family search site.

I narrowed it to your surname, Wexford and any births/deaths/marriages between 1900 - 1958. There's a lot of results.

Telephone directory shows 29 hits for Harpurs in Wexford. Might be worth a few phonecalls if you're really keen.

I had a grandmother Johanna Harpur (1898-1990).

Her parents were from "Killurin" Wexford (not sure if it was one or both). The father was John Harpur (b 1862) and her mother was Johanna (b. 1863) (maiden name unknown).

John & Johanna moved to Dublin and were in Dublin during the 1911 census. http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Dublin/Wood_Quay/Carman_Hall/64354/

I searched the 1911 census for Harpur and found some Harpurs in Killurin

Where is Hasleyrath? It doesn't appear on google maps.

may be no relation but there's a Wexford born Nicholas Harpur on the list of Ireland's Casualties of WW1. No 18171, Private, 1st Battalion, Royal Dublin Fusiliers, killed in action Gallipoli 4th June 1915.

He's on the Commonwealth War Graves site as Harper :

There are a couple of Dublin based Harpurs in the Dublin electoral list 1939/40 including a John and Johanna (different addresses though)

There's a tree on Ancestry with the family of John Harpur (1862 - 1931) and his wife Johanna Brothers (1863 - ??) from Wexford. Lists children as :

Johanna "Josie" Harpur 1898 - 1990 (married to Patrick Holahan)
John "Jack" Harpur 1899 - 1976
James "Jim" Harpur 1902 -
Catherine "Kitty" Harpur 1905 -

Nothing for Mary in this tree. Another tree has Mary marrying a Sean O'Connor in 1928 and passing away in Cork in 1987.

Hasleyrath seems to contain only 3 houses in the 1911 census. Seems to belong to Harristown. Hopefully the following Google Map link works OK. Harristown shown be seen as the red marker with Hasleyrath to the East :

The 'Leitirm-Roscommon Genealogy website' has part of the 1901 census for Wexford. There are 21 matches for Harpur and that should help in you search.

Thanks J D I didn't know this resourse existed. Was able to check how many Hewson's were registered to vote ~ now to figure out which are my relations.
