Probably shouldn't do this but what the hell. Based on last few weeks lack of training I'm not really that worried about the time just glad to be doing it but will be interesting to see how close I get to that predicted(hopeful)time.

First time poster so apologies if I have messed up the thread! 4 years since my one and only marathon. Currently 10kg lighter than last time and have 3 times the number of long runs under my belt! Looking forward to Sunday!!

Just spotted on the page about the live streaming this quote "The SSE Airtricity Dublin Marathon is now the largest Marathon in Ireland and the fifth largest in Europe..."

So in no particular order there will be London, Berlin, Paris... but what is number 4 going to be without going off to Google? I can't think what would be the obvious next in the list, and certainly wouldn't have expected Dublin to be 5th.

I'll be happy with any kind of PB. 4:10 is possible but I'll go for something in the middle
Hi Derco, your time is something similar to my aim, with this being my 1st marathon. Any advice on pace?
PB 01:56 for previous half marathons, was going to try be consistent in my times, 02:06 for half, 6 minute km pace.
Any advice from previous runners would be great, nerves starting to kick in.

Missed too much training over the summer to contemplate PB hunting, so just planning on going with 3:30 pacers, might see if i can kick on later in the race. Hopefully a good training run on the road back to full fitness and another crack at sub 3 in London next year

They've had timing mats at those points for years, I'd be surprised if anything changes

    https://track.rtrt.me/e/TDL-DUBLINM-2017#/map

    The tracker map indicates that it's the usual 10k / 13.1 miles / 30k.

Would the Great North Run come into this?

It's not an easy one to guess so I gave up and tried Googling. Nearest list I've been able to find shows Paris, London, Berlin.............big gap.......Barcelona.

    http://www.aims-worldrunning.org/statistics/World's_Largest_Marathons.html#2015

It's from 2015 though and Dublin is now a lot bigger, but some other event from that list must have jumped up in participation numbers as well by quite a bit.

It's a bit of a guessing game, as I've been injured for a couple of months and have only managed to string together 4-5 weeks of solid training, but I've always been one for aiming high and repeatedly failing until I succeed, so why change now?! Worst case, I'll cheer y'all on as you run by me!

What time will the elites be through 10k at? I live in Carpenterstown so want to pop down and look at someone moving that fast. Even your pb @ 5.43 per mile is unbelievable!

Based on last year, they'll be going through 10k shortly after 9:30, and hence should reach the Castleknock College/White's Road crossroads just after 9:35.

  • Registered Users Posts: 19,495 ✭✭✭✭Krusty_Clown

Yeah, anywhere from 30 minutes to 32 minutes to get to the 10k mark for the leading men, and somewhere between 34 and 36 minutes for the leading women.

Yeah, right. You might see me limping past you to the bar in McGrattans.

And I see from that there were at least 9 people who started early and went through the 10km point between 3 minutes and 30 minutes after the gun, yes...3 minutes after the gun.

There are two people showing in those results who then went on to cross the finish line inside the top 20 and one of them is classified as 1st M45 after doing the first 10km in under 13 minutes.

The paces don't fit with that. Some of them seem to have just started early and walked, but there are a couple who started early and then slotted in amongst the leading runners and were able to hold on most of the way.

Also noticed that everyone with their team name set to Planet-Tours seem to have mysteriously missed the first two timing mats?

Not sure of exact gradiant but miles 2-7 are uphill and you reach the highest peak in Castleknock which is after about a 250ft climb. Then again you're climbing from miles 12-14 but not as steep. Finally there's a little hill in Milltown at mile 20 and then Roebuck Rd is steep towards the end at mile 22

They were able to run how many miles at 'elite' pace??

Sounds strange; most of us can't run a mile at that pace!!

Looks like a case of 'Wave 3 starting in Wave 1'.

Anybody running in fancy dress suits, the lad dressed as the Eiffel Tower (who I passed in crumlin) and the fire man dressed in full apparatus (passed him going back into the park) were let go well ahead of the gun last year. This might explain some of the times.

One of them held 13th place at least between half and 30 km before dropping down and finishing in just under 2:50.

That would make sense. But do times not go by when you go under the start mat.

    Seems not??
