I'm not sure being single and having a beloved pet = automatically lonely and filling the child shaped void.

It could do of course, but sometimes it just means loving your pet(s) which anyone of any age - single or paired up - can do!

Always seems to be only the women with pets who are deemed sad and lonely too. ;)

Definitely. Correlation does not imply causation. While it may be the case for some, its definitely not for all.

I think people picking up their dog's **** and carrying it around with them is pretty gross..

You're gonna hate raising kids then.

Little shıt machines. At least dogs shıte outdoors mostly.

Yea the whole "sure what can you do" attitude to cats pooping is annoying.

Going to go all USA on them and put up a "They sh!t, I shoot" sign.

After the young lads shoes, mine, the peg bag and clothes basket got kitty sh!t on them today: I was playing in the beginning, the mood all changed.

Do you have a dog, F? I used to be in an estate surrounded by houses with cats and never once found a cat sh*t in the garden. They knew better than to drop in for a sneaky one for fear of being found by the GSD.

You use an inverted plastic bag. You don't touch any of it and then seal it. You then carry it to the nearest bin.

Nothing gross about it and way nicer than leaving sh1te on the street for other people to walk into.

I thought the correct way was to put it in a bag and tie it to the nearest tree, like an anti-christmas decoration.

That's what lots of dog owners do around here anyway.

No, I’d love one but we don’t have the time. Sorry, that’s not true. We’d be unwilling to make the time.

I think it’s sad that people treat dogs like children but don’t care that their Irish pork products come from pigs treated abhorrently that never see the light of day. Pigs are smart animals, I just can’t eat them the way they’re raised and slaughtered.

I don't eat pig because it says not to in the Bible..

I agree OP, some people fetishise their pets to a worrying degree. Not all, by a long shot, but a fair amount and I think, like most things, the internet has that magnifying effect where you might not have been aware of it before.

Some doctors are now saying that children can be potty trained and learn to use toilets. Controversial, I know.

I live in an apartment with my cat and he gets every blessed thing that comes on sale in Lidl and Aldi. My place is littered with things for him-a "house", two caves, two pet beds, a giant scratching post big enough for a lion, smaller scratching post, scratching boards, toy rat, and a robot mouse that's disappeared under the sofa. Lives a finer life than I do!

That's right. Straight from the womb. You've just got to be strict with them. Victorian almost.

Does the bible have the relivance it once had, since we have advanced our understanding and knowledge of ourselves and our world?

One thing I object to is people spending thousands on vet treatment on an animal who will have limited quality of life afterwards. That money could be used much better elsewhere.

People have probably worked hard for that money, they can do what they wish with it

The only issues I have is when they bring dogs for walks in strollers / bags. It's a ****ing dog, it wants and needs to walk. It wants to be a dog, not a human baby.

Referring to pets as their babies and calling themselves mammy / daddy. No, sorry but it's not even close. You are a pet owner, it's not in the same league as raising a child.

I have a cat, a dog, goldfish and a turtle. Actually, I don't own any of them, I just clean after them, feed them, buy the various items they need, walk them, carry them from house to car and car to vet then pay the vets bills. I give out but I love my pets, sorry the pets of my children and wife and we had a funeral for our last dog. He was a great dog in fairness.

What if your dog had health issues , ie it was recovering from surgery, elderly or had other health issues .... would you still have ISSUES ???

My pets are apart of the family so they get as much love, respect and attention as anyone else. I wouldn't dress them up or put harnesses on my cats and bring them for walks like ive seen some people do but it's better than seeing abused animals.

As for the notion that people who love their pets are using them as a surrogate partner/child maybe for some it's the case but I think for most people thats a fairly big and negative conclusion to jump to. People love their pets, so what? It doesnt need to be over analyzed, it makes them happy, the pets are happy so leave them to it.

    yes.

When dogs are old and unable to walk, you dont dress them up and push them around in a ****ing pram

So u would leave them at home alone & take out only your younger dogs ?! Let’s hope your family treat you better when u get old & infirm ....

I was watching a documentary on the TV a few evenings ago about pet owners who basically threat their pets like children and seriously over indulge, spoil and over-pamper them.

The show featured, among others, a middle aged woman who toiled all day cooking food for her three cats and a gay male couple who had three toy dogs and dressed them up in ridiculous clothing and gear. There was also a memorial end of life “funeral” service for dog and cat owners who wanted to mourn their pets.

Now don’t get me wrong, I love animals and over the years have had three dogs and two cats myself - and pets give tremendous affection and comfort to their owners, but treating the pet as a surrogate child does the animal absolutely no favours. They are, at the end of the day, animals with instincts and cannot act as a substitute for a partner of child, no matter how much the over-indulgent pet owner wants them to be.

As a gay man myself and the member of an over 40’s gay FB group, the number of images that other gay men (mainly but not exclusively in the USA) post up of their pets is truly staggering. It may seem like a cliche, but most cliches are based on a big smattering of truth. The over-pampered pet seems to be an increasing phenomenon, at least in the West.

Anyone here agree - or disagree - with me? Anyone here big into pampering their beloved pets to the Nth degree themselves?

It's usually people who can't or won't have kids for various reasons. Sometimes the reasons are sad, sometimes selfish, sometimes ludicrous. Pets are the bottom of the pecking tree, they're not supposed to be slobbered over. It's utterly unnatural to usual a pet as a surrogate child.

Admittedly, pets are far, far easier to look after than children, regardless of what people say, but in the end, people either have kids, pets or accountants.

Nope, dead right. When my last dog was old and sick we forced a nappy (he was incontinent) on him, a nice sailor suit and threw him into a childs pram. I mean he mostly slept and it hurt him when he was lifted but boy did he look cute

I mean, that's far better than letting him rest comfortable on the bed in the sitting room and cleaning him when needed.

Stop with the nonsense, people aren't doing that stuff for medical reasons and please, if I'm incontinent and in pain, leave me the **** alone in the chair by the fire and TV

It does annoy me when people refer to themselves as parents just because they have a cat or dog but if people treat their pets right, it's all good

I think they just wouldn't put the dog in a buggy or pram, which isn't exactly a sign of animal neglect. Most people don't put their dog in a buggy or pram, it's not standard behaviour.

I don't see how treatment of a human and treatment of a dog are to be compared also.

the mostly American thing of the owners referring to themselves as their pet's "mom" I find a bit weird

A belief in gender identity involves a level of faith as there is nothing tangible to prove its existence which, as something divorced from the physical body, is similar to the idea of a soul. - Colette Colfer
