A military historian - Rob Schaefer - is running this tonight......

    On his blog he writes.....

"When I recently spoke to Herr Gerhard Meissner, a former comrade of my grandfather, he seemed to be very interested in the internet and what I do on it. A little later, when he told me that he, his daughter and his son-in-law will be spending two weeks with relatives in Wesel, I took the opportunity to ask Gerhard if he would be willing to do a question & answer session on Twitter. After a lot of explaining he agreed to my offer and I can now proudly tell you that tomorrow it will be your chance to ask your questions to a former member of Germany’s’ Wehrmacht."

    .......

Gerhard served with Infanterie-Regiment 1 (1. Infanterie-Division), just in time to participate in the Campaign in the West (1940). Gerhard stayed with Infanterie-Regiment 1 (later “Grenadier-Regiment 1“) up until January 1945 when he was badly wounded by a soviet sniper. Transported back to Germany for treatment he was taken prisoner by US Forces in March 1945.
Gerhard was decorated with the Eastern Front Medal, Iron Cross 2nd Class, Infantry Assault Badge, and Wound Badge in Silver.
