are their any cheap classic policies where it can b ur first car, ie dont need 2 show evidence of another insured car?

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,021 ✭✭✭Silvera

Not that I'm aware of. Give some of the above a call and see what they say.

I think AXA and first Ireland do 10'000 mile policies where the classic can be your sole car but it is dear I was quoted €845 for my 3L scimitar. The IVS policy sounds great I'll be straight onto them.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,021 ✭✭✭Silvera

Glad my info is of use shagman !

Don't forget to mention where you got their details (i.e. give them the www.boards.ie address !;) )...........it may just lead to some of their members signing up to this forum - which would be great !

    Silvera.

P.S. €845 for a 3 litre car (in everyday use!) doesn't sound too bad to me !

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,037 ✭✭✭shagman

I'm trying to work it so that I have a classic policy and a campervan policy ( I have 1 of each). Both policies require you to have a second vehicle. Have no desire to own or run a modern car. I'll let you know how I get on.

Guess I'm just a bit scabier than you ,,,,,,IVS policy at €150 sounds more like it to me!!!! Thanks for the tip.
Rang them today and yer man said I could get the policy, the form only asks whether you have a vehicle for daily use... which I do.
My van isn't a huge RV it's very like the A team van in size and will be a cushy daily driver once I finish the LPG conversion.

My W123 200T is only 1984 so not a classic but I am insuring it for €600 for

    - normal policy, unlimited mileage
    - TP only
    - me 29 Full NCB, wife 29 just passed test

    With AXA.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,021 ✭✭✭Silvera

    Paul(MN),
I thought that your 'bus' (sorry ;) ) would qualify for a classic policy (at least with some companies) ?

.........unless you don't want a classic policy that is ?!

Hmmm. I really hope that's the case.
But I'm pretty sure if you enquired further you find you need another full policy. I hope I'm wrong though (!) and I'm going to call and get a quote for myself anyway.

I called a bunch of places yesterday and they ALL insisted that you had to have a full policy on another car. I had hoped being a named driver was enough but it appears not.

Richard Brophy gave me a non-classic quote of €744, but if there was the possibility of getting a classic quote only being a named driver I'd jump at it.

    *edited to add*

Just called Carole Nash Insurance - they will allow you a classic policy as a named driver - but only on your spouse's car. Interesting (and unconstitutional perhaps?!). I'm getting married in June so at least my problem is short term (though my other problems might not be). :D

hi, i got insurance from carole nash for a 4.2 litre jag. 580 euro , policy requires that you already have a policy for daily driving and a milage limit.. but they did not reqiure proof of either. i need to get a lpg conversion- anyone know where to get the kit?

That's all well and good until you hit somebody's Bentley - and they run a check on you... ;)

I'd agree with The Atheist, if you don't have the required full policy in the event of a claim, your classic policy would probably be worthless.

    mannurse,
re LPG conversion, might be worth contacting Robert Hughes Jaguar Specialist, who will be at the Classic Car Sale on 3rd April in Citywest.
(Sorry, I don't have contact details for him. Try Jaguar Club)

    Hope this helps.

P.S - Guys, please mention this site/forum when contacting clubs like the Irish Vintage Society - input from their members could really make this forum grow - and their knowledge would benefit all of us.

i totally agree, i would not recomend decieving the insurance co's as they will look for any discrepency to aviod paying out. having said that , you can still have a fairly sporty car as a daily driver without the insurance costing too much. once you have your own policy. ie- buy a cheap car with minimal insurance cost( for example a micra etc) then you can insure a fairly sporty car that is over the 25 year mark like a vw golf gti mark 1, porsche 928, 911 turbo, bmw 628.633,635- the list goes on. in general, it will work out alot cheaper- as long as you are mechanically minded. it worked out for me but i'm sure not for every one.

thanks silvera, i'll check that out

I was thinking of LPG for my recently acquired 4.2 Daimler as well so perhaps we can compare notes on same. I am a bit shocked at the high price your Jag cost to insure though. I added mine to my other classic policy (4 classics now on the one policy) I have not received any bill for additional premium yet though - im sure it won't be long - will let you know how I did :)

    Silvera,

The bus is a daily driver at 12,000 miles per year so a classic policy is out.

I just called the Irish Vintage Society (mentioneds Boards.ie) and got the same question. I'm getting him to send the form and then I'll have a look at it myself. I get the feeling the fella I spoke to isn't too interested in the details of the policy, which is fine, but I'm going to make sure I'm covered. i.e. check the form and the T&Cs for a mention anywhere about a full policy.

That said, €150 fully comp - wow!

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,021 ✭✭✭Silvera

"€150 full comp" - their ads says 'third party cover' ?

    please keep us updated.

    Hmmm.
The guy I spoke to was asking me about other higher quotes I had, and then said "and I bet they were only for third party." I assumed that meant his quote wasn't. That said I don't think either of us knew the details of the policy.

When I get the policy docs in the post I'll repost with the full story.

Yeah Please let me know I'm gonna ring up tommorrow and get them to send me application forms too.
As regards LPG I am in the process of fitting a kit at the moment to my 5.7Ltr chevy. I bought the kit minus tanks off ebay for €500 incl shipping and have bought 2 tanks since for €20 and €40 (I want max volume so I can fill up once a week not once a day). If you want it professionally done mountainview motors in Tallaght / blessington area (they're in the golden pages) will supply and fit a kit for €2K - €2.5K I think . I intend fitting it all myself then getting them to leak test it and give it the once over, I imagine I'll have to get some sort of test cert from them for my insurance company. Theres a bit of variety in these kits depending on what fuel injection / carb system and engine you have but if you do a search on ebay UK you should find a good deal. I did find another place in Wales that did good value kits keep an eye out for them. If theres any questions you have ask away.....

Okay, so I got my policy document in the post...

The news isn't good for those of us hoping to avoid a second policy.

Firstly there's a question to answer - "Do you own a separate private car?"
So I thought okay - at least they're a "no" option.

But then there's a box beside this question addressing "All Drivers:" which says:
Required: Copy of your own private car insurance certificate. Engineers Report or NCT Cert - Mileage declaration - and photo of car.
So I checked the form for the company offering the rate, and gave them a call (O'Riordan Insurances Limited Tel: 021 4275311). The girl on the phone told me it was a necessity to own a second car and have a full policy on it.

Looks like (for me) anyway I'll be insuring my 33 yr old car as a main car, at least until I get hitched later in the year... :(

At least I'm now a member of the IVS.

Interesting, thanks for updating us The Atheist.

    A few questions -

Regarding IVS membership, did you recieve a membership card, etc. ?

And is there any requirement for members to attend a specific number of IVS events/meetings ?

Also, what does the form say re 'agreed valuation' of a classic ?

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 25,553 Mod ✭✭✭✭Dades

    Hey Silvera...
Regarding IVS membership, did you recieve a membership card, etc. ?
Yes I did - in the same envelope as the policy form. It's a small square with their logo and your name and m'ship number.
is there any requirement for members to attend a specific number of IVS events/meetings ?
There's no mention of a requirement. They did include a provisional list of events with which they are associated for 2005. (A lot of local events). I'll probably turn up for a few anyway... :D
Also, what does the form say re 'agreed valuation' of a classic ?
The only mention of value is in the general section where you describe the year, make, model etc. There is a box in a table labelled "Estimate of value".

On the back of the policy form is a blank "Motor Vehicle Inspection Report", with IVS logos on the top. What you are supposed to do with this I do not know. Bring it to a garage? An affiliated garage?

I can fax the form (both sides if wanted) if anyone needs a look badly - just PM me and I'll hope to get around to it. :D

    CHEERS!

The only mention of value is in the general section where you describe the year, make, model etc. There is a box in a table labelled "Estimate of value".

I'm afraid the concept of "Agreed value" is a bit of a red herring in Irish Classic Insurance land. It's a vital element of the policies here on the continent, because people realise there can be a bit of discrepancy between what you paid for the car and what it is worth, and what the insurance companies think it is worth!! The difference in opinion can be absolutely staggering when it comes to paying out on a claim.

So to avoid any unnessecary disappointments, I would suggest to make some solid arrangements with your insurance company on what will be paid out in the event of a total loss. Also the matter of potentially buying back the "remains" to have the car restored as opposed to the insurance company scrapping it, could be a clause you would like to have installed. This in view of cars that hold a certain "uniqueness" (as in one of the first of the series built, the last of the series built, one-offs, special sentimental values, etc)

Atheist... First Ireland (01) 8820800 will do a policy for you with your classic as main car with a 10'000 mile limit. You don't need to have a second modern car insured in your own name. Will cost between €650 and €850 though :( depending on engine capacity.Thats for fully comp with all the trimmings though incl breakdown recovery and glass. I think after looking around this will be the policy I go for as any other one would be too sketchy and not worth it if I hit that aforementioned bentley.
As regards the vehicle inspection report I had to get one done for my Chevy camper van and they would normally like this done at a main dealers but seeing as there is no chevrolet dealers in Ireland I got it done at a local nissan dealer (Chevrol-EH? ireland were still daewoo then, and still are ...YOU CAN'T POLISH A TURD).

Can one of the gurus shift the LPG posts on this to a seperate thread maybe and we can continue that discussion there rather than intermingling topics.

Greetings, I have a question. I'm getting my first car this year. I'm just going to pick up any 1 litre piece of piss and get the least expensive insurance I can, not easy for a 17 year old. however if I were to go and buy a 1983 MK2 golf GTI afterwards and apply for classic car insurance, would I still be crucified insurance wise? considering I have my other car?
    Any help appreciated.

I'm afraid you wouldn't even get that far.

You need to be 25 or over to get a classic insurance quote. Probably to exclude unfortunates like yourself!

At least there are some advantages to being older... :D
