Hi Aoife. What was the main reason for you going vegan ?
While shopping do you try buy Irish or whatever is best value ?

Would you consider food miles, packaging and cropping practices when buying food ?

I have a sheep farm but changing to dairy as sheep are unprofitable. The main reason for a shift to dairying in the country is money. If you became the minister for agriculture and the environment in the morning, and all livestock farms became tillage farms would you subsidize them for loss in earning because tillage isn’t as profitable as dairy ?

Hi David. It mostly ethical reasons but after I became vegan I learned about the environmental side of it and it really solidified the decision for me. My boyfriend and I were vegetarian for about 6months when one of his friends became vegan and he was looking into it out of curiosity. He didn't like what he learned and I followed on a few days later. Bit annoyed about it at the time as I was doing all the shopping and cooking with our work patterns lol. But settled into it no prob after a fortnight.

Depends on what were buying to be honest. Ideally I'd love to buy Irish where ever possible. I do the majority of my shopping in Tesco. I find supervalu extremely expensive for the quality. Ill pick the irish spuds and carrots in tesco but the majority are irish anyway. I think Tesco has the best selection for vegans and I find many of the things I buy are Irish or British so not too bad. I guess it's mainly fruit, particularly bananas for me, that have the air miles. Apples and strawberries etc are usually irish. What actually has been issue for me of late is the plastic they come in. I think we should give local farmers markets more business and I'm going to make a point of doing so in future. It's a shame they are only there at certain times when many are at work too. But i was only saying it earlier today and will make a point of it in future for sure.

Possibly an unpopular answer but no I wouldn't give loss of earnings. I would much rather subsidies be spent on helping farmers convert farms and get the necessary education for them to do so. I think every support should be given and maybe a once off grant but it's not realistic to give loss of earnings. I'm a civil servant and I'm on a different pay scale to the woman across from me. If that is ever restored i wont get loss of earnings. My boyfriend is self employed and if people decide his service is no longer required he wouldn't get a loss of earnings. I genuinely don't want people to suffer and there are a large amount of farmers in Ireland but we have to move with the times and people are responsible for themselves. I say this with a dairy farmer uncle and a beef farmer uncle. If it was introduced tomorrow there would loads of jobs created in areas we probably haven't even thought of! All hypothetical though. It would be gradual and I don't think it will happen in my lifetime

In a vegan world domesticated animal would die out. Would a cow for example survive a winter without hay/silage?

Interesting AMA OP thanks for doing.

Question - are you averse to animal products or is it just products from exploited animals. For example if you found a dead wild deer would you be averse to tanning it or using the antlers as a coat rack or whatever?

Hi! I think the point would be no animals become extinct. There will always be kind souls who feed wild animals. And animal sanctuaries that help vulnerable animals. Hard to say but deer/foxes/badgers etc generally do ok. We can be sound and drop a bale somewhere if conditions are tough. Like we do with birds in winter etc.

Adverse to all animal products. The thinking would be any animal that was killed or used is already exploited so a vegan no no. Lol my Dad has asked me this many a time trying to take the mick. If you want to eat road kill be my guest but your arteries might not thank you for it lol! Personally that wouldn't occur to me to use the dead body for any purpose but it would better than killing a deer with the intent of hanging up a few coats... A hungry fox would prob get to it first anyway

Yes, I would feel this is the case all right. Although I'm curious about the vegan world, there is not a lot being said to make me think it would ever be the utopia that vegans believe it could be. I've always believed if prehistoric man had to wait for food to grow humanity never would have survived.

I don't think anyone is trying to sell it as a utopia. We'll all still have to go to work and ensure there's enough food and all that jazz. With the prehistoric man, the populations would have been miniscule compared to now so if food was growing wild there would have been zero competition for it. But to be fair we're long past that now. I think we sometimes get bogged down in what was done in the past and small details about the future. The reality is many sheep have been bred to grow an abnormal amount of wool. We would obviously not just let them go around with years worth overgrown wool. It is possible to help animals and then them be. A few generations on and different species would interbreed and the truth is we have no clue what that would look like. We would deal with it as it happens. This would be gradual and we'd learn as we go. No oracles here sadly!

What is your opinion on these new fangled vegan sausage rolls? Have you tried any? Do you have a favourite?

Calcium. Where to get it. I hear supplements increase heart attack risk and best is to get it from food. Without milk or fish how does one adequately get calcium without supplementation?

Consuming vitamin K2 helps prevent that. But vegan sources have lower biological availability

Had the Applegreen ones on Saturday! I liked them, they're a good size. Very meaty but I found a whole chickpea and was immediately relaxed lol. I've also had the Linda McCartney ones and the Fry's in the past. They're all actually quite nice now and again. But Tesco do frozen mini ones and they're by far my favourite. And reasonably priced. Yum

You may indeed have to go out of your way if you're not getting enough on your plant based diet. Small inconvenience though

Always laugh at people questioning vegans or veggies on where they get this or that nutrient. Loads of people who eat meat miss vital nutrients too but never get questions about it.

Its a vegan ask me anything thread, so not really surprising that it is asked here?

There is a general lack of knowledge about a pure plant based diet and mainly about protein and B12. Lack of B12 can be very nasty and I am not sure that there is an equivalent deficiency among people who eat meat. If both plant and meat eaters eat a balanced diet I am pretty sure only a plant based diet may be lacking in B12 and few non vegans would know where to source adequate B12 other than supplement and fortified foods.

I referred to K2 from vegan sources can be difficult to absorb by our bodies. K2 seems to play a role in the prevention of calcification of the arteries

    Hi c.p.w.g.w.
It was nothing to do with what you said. It was just a link to show plant calcium sources. Your post is perfect. :)

    Nutritional yeast is good.

The point I am making is that vegans are more likely to be aware of B12 sources and vegetarian, flexatarian and full carnivores interested in shifting to a full plant based diet or more likely thinking about reducing their intake of animal products will be less aware.

We should welcome their questions and not assume it’s trolling or anti vegan.

I think we are seeing a big shift to a flexatarian diet, plus a growing group of individuals who go plant based for short periods and then back to reduced animal product. I base this on my limited personal experience when chatting to people who attending tai chi and yoga classes and at the gym. Now most are doing it for health and environmental reasons, no one discussed animal welfare but it’s in the background I suppose.

I know what you mean and agree but I think the response is just as bad as the “where do you get your protein/vitamin/mineral from”.

There is enough misinformation posted in this forum, I can’t recall the last vegetarian thread posted here and are there not more vegetarians than vegans?

It has become a little toxic and unwelcoming if you are not a devout vegan.

Not being smart - but I've rarely came across posters asking "where do you get your protein"

So I've did a quick search and in total there are 11 incidences of the phrase "where do you get your protein" on boards.

Nine of those were veg•ns saying they are always being asked that question and two are posters asking where they can get protein bars or shakes.

Not one non veg•n poster since 2000 has asked that particular question.

Now maybe boards posters are just strangely different from the rest of the population and don't ask such daft questions?

Btw the count is now up to 12 because I've just typed the question in this comment ;)

Can't speak for anyone else but in person it's almost always about protein

I was talking about real life rather than boards. This is my first time on this forum tbh.

Only time I have been asked about protein this year, was seeing a specialist nurse before a consultant appointment. She was unhappy that my protein only came from only plant sources, do you eat a lot of chickpeas? And what about oily fish? It started to feel like the vegetarian scene from the Royle Family. Funnily enough I dislike chickpeas.

They were all singing from the Irish Heart Foundation healthy eating hymn sheet, including the nutritionist the sent me to see. Admittedly it is a well balanced diet but when you do not eat meat it does seem like they recommend a lot.

No fair enough. Although I've seen that said here before - that it's the most common question asked etc (not necessarily on this forum btw). I thought that boards would be fairly representative of views across the board so it would turn up in one of the various discussions. But bizarrely it hasn't - that's all.

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,981 ✭✭✭Unearthly

There was one lad in After Hours who responded to me that I needed meat for protein but I think they were just trying to troll.

Outside of boards it's asked a lot more, same with other calcium iron etc.

On the real spectrum of stupidity, I genuinely had someone ask me is a Dominos Pepperoni pizza not vegan but she is like that on a lot of topics
