RTÉ historical drama with kids in it

Can anyone remember this? Excuse me if I get the facts wrong - I think I saw it when I was like 7 or 8.

Back in the early 80s, there was a period drama (as in 18th century-ish) on RTÉ with all the parts played by kids. They were wearing Barry Lyndon type costumes - wigs etc. I don't remember a lot about it apart from one of the characters jumping from the window of his castle and coming back as a ghost later on (I think). The closing music on it was Shaun Davey's The Brendan Voyage or if not that, something else similar on the bagpipes. I think the kids involved were from Cork or Kerry.

Apologies for bumping a ten year old post but looking back through some old threads and this has me intrigued. Anyone know what this was?

Scarf Jack came to mind, but that had adults in it.

This is from the Indo in 1982 announcing the winners of a competition to write a childrens drama series. It could be the series OP remembers as one of the (at the time proposed) episodes was written by someone from Cork. I can't find anything more about this series.

The closest thing to it I can think of is Year Of The French though the child actors thing doesn't tag with it. I haven't seen it since it was originally broadcast (circa 82/83).

Come to think of it the 1978 TV version of Kidnapped has a theme tune with uileann pipes by Liam O Flynn who also played on Daveys The Brendan Voyage and it has an 18th century setting and youngish lead actor. Pity OP hasn't posted in 5 years so can't confirm wether it's that or not.

O Donoghues Revenge. Originally shown in October 1982 and repeated over Christmas 1985, I spotted the latter listing on this old RTE Guide posted on Facebook. This is for certain the show remembered by op. Music by Shaun Davey.

I remember kids dresssed up as 18th century solodiers... that rings a bell.

    Some detective work!

I had the dubious distinction of seeing the Kelly Family live at Feile 95 in Cork. At that point I'd no idea who they were and weirdly there was a trad group from Skibbereen of the same name, when I saw the Kelly Family listed in the programme I thought surely that's not them and my curiosity got the better of me.

Jesus that linked video is weird, seems to have been when they were all very young, looks like some kind of cult. Presume the big guy is their old man?

yes, they were basically a cult.
The Father was an Irish-American beat/hippie guy who'd moved to Europe to sell antiques and live this nomadic life, and then his kids formed a pop group and then more kids arrived, and the whole family became this weird European pop sensation who lived in a bus, and didn't wash or cut their hair.
