    Ok, here goes.

I'm a solo artist from Celbridge, Co. Kildare.
I've played gigs with The Frames, Damien Rice (some lead guitar with him too back in the day), Mundy, sang with The Maryjanes, and play 0xegen in 2005.

I'm just got into the home recording on a serious level recently, and am working on a debut album.

I don't need to record more than two tracks at a time at home, so this setup is really working well for me. I can't get over how easy working with Logic on Mac is compared to other DAW's I've tried. The Solo 610 is a lovely piece of kit, particularly for someone who doesn't have the experience or know-how to get the full benefit of a more fully featured channel strip like the LA610, an Avalon 737 or something like that. Getting great results with it on vocals and acoustic (seems to pair really nicely with the TLM), and it's sweet as a DI too.

That's it I guess. I look forward to posting some of the new material I'm recording at home here for feedback!

Good gear Tony, and Welcome ! I think we may have met before, did you used work with Dave Slevin at some stage?

It's interesting that you have top notch mics and the UA mic pre is lovely. If you wanted to increase your quality overall look at improving your A to D, in my humble opinion you'd be surprised how much better all your other tools would sound then.

    ^eek... Neumann mics!!
I'ld kill to own one of those... but its just too much for a broke student to ask for!!

I'm currently saving up to get Guitar Rig.
And maybe get the Mbox Micro. It looks pretty cool to have protools on the go without having to carry an audio interface around...
Battery is another software on my shopping list!

    Hey Paul.
Don't think I've worked with Dave, although there's a good chance we've met at some stage. I know the Mackie is the weak link. It's nice, but I'd love to replace it at some stage with an Apogee or something. It's not a huge priority for me at the moment though.

af_thefragile, you'd be surprised how much you can pick up a Neumann for....the TLM cost me €670 on ebay, brand new, with the shockmount.

My whole current set up probably costs less than €600! Including my mac...
Yup, i need to seriously start saving up over this summer!!

But i do think having a good condenser mic would always be a decent investment. The thought itself of the warm sound of an acoustic guitar and vocals recorded though that mic makes me drool...:pac:

Condenser Mics are the only products that have really 'dropped' in price in the last 5 years if you compare quality against quality. Gawd Bless our Chinese brothers working so hard!

Just realised ive never filled this out, so here goes:):

i make music of all sorts, from electroacoustic stuff to guitar indie pop type stuff, dependent on whatever mood im in that day.

im currently finishing off a masters in music technology (3 weeks to finish thesis eeek!).

Guitar and keys would be my main instruments, though lately i've been playing a lot of bass. I play in a couple of different bands, covers and original stuff, though im trying to get out of the covers/pubrock/weddings thing, its been a neccesary evil for the last 2 years while in college. Nothing against playing covers that i actually like though:)

Have recorded an EP for a friends band and can't wait to do more of that kinda stuff when im finished college. Also teach music at weekends.

    My gear is as follows:
Computer - Dell Inspiron 9300, Intel Centrino 2.13ghz, 2gb ram, 500gb iomega hardrive for audio.

    Interface - Presonus Firepod

    Monitors - Alesis M1 620s

    Headphones - Sennheiser HD25

Midi stuff - M-audio Radium 61 key controller and Korg padKontrol

Keyboards/Synths - Microkorg and a slightly battered but still beautiful Wurlitzer 200A Electric Piano(oh yeh:))

    Piano - Yamaha U-2

Guitars - US Strat, Mex Tele, Mex P-Bass (All Fender), Epiphone ES-335 and Martin DX1 acoustic.

Amps - Fender '65 Deluxe Reverb and Marshall JCM900 Stack

Effects Pedals - Ibanez TS808, MXR Distortion+, Boss SD-1 (overdrive), US Big Muff, MXR Dynacomp, MXR Phase 90, Boss DD-6 Delay, Boss TU-2 Tuner

Mics - What else but a trusty sm57 and its trusty friend the trusty sm58:)

Software - Cubase SX3, Max/MSP, Ableton Live 6, Kontakt, Battery, B4, Elektrik Piano, Waves Renaissance Bundle, loads of free plug-ins.

    Think thats it!

Shopping list - a decent condenser (or 7:)), hopefully starting with an AKG C414 my mate is flogging if i get the cash together before he sells it. A decent stage keyboard/piano. A better interface (rme ff800 ideally), some nice preamps and other decent outboard gear. So the next €5,000 that randomly appears in a puff of spoke should cover that lot:)

    How goes it..
You reputation preceeds you.. I will be in contact re acoustic tiling soon.. Richard Dowling (WAV Mastering) recommended you highly..
The monitors are Highland Audio Oran 4301. Not a 'studio' speaker persay as I can't really afford them right now as I am concentrating on getting my control room right. I just like the sound of them, they seem to be relatively uncoloured and true. Flicking between the different spekers through a Samson C Control..

Ah the ole "Reputation" or lack thereof!

If you know Richard's room you know Auralex then. His has been the most bass trapping we've ever installed! ... but that's because he has a big room.

    Indeed, the rep...
Ya Rich mastered some of my first recordings..nice set-up down there, reasonably priced too. Will try the ould carpet in the corners. Got lucky with the live room, sounds nice, have the options with rugs to change the 'sound' of it, but I know I am not hearing a true representation in my control room. Mostly in the low end...as per I hear you think ! :)

If you have R to give you advice you'll be doing ok. He's a good man with a Savage CV!

Experiment with a loose roll , it needs to be taking up a fair bit of space to reach down to those dangerous frequencies.

Hey, I'm Niall. I grew up in the US, but returned to Kerry, where I was born, in late 2007.

I make electronic music, which is troublesome, because I don't really listen to that as much as I used to. I returned with my Elektron Machinedrum and Monomachine {the center of my studio}, JoMox Sunsyn, Vermona DRM1-Mk3, Focusrite Compounder, a small A&H mixer and a pair of Adam A7s, but life's been pretty crazy since I came back, and I haven't been of a mind to make very much music.

Hi, I'm DECEiFER, from outer space (aka Shannon). When I'm visiting planet earth (aka everywhere but Shannon), I like to think of myself as a recording enthusiast. Two things about me that should be known; I don't play an instrument and I don't read music.

I do this for fun, and have never *scammed* anyone into paying me for time spent. I'd prefer to hone my abilities and become a lot better at doing what I do, that is recording people who can play an instrument or three, before trying to make any money out of it. I first tried my hand at it in 2000 when I was in Transition Year at school, but because I'm utterly lazy, I only have slightly more than a handful of recordings (mostly unfinished at that) to my name to this day.

Right now I'm living in Tralee and am going to college to learn a thing or two about a thing or two. Anything in radio, music, and even film (as I discovered not so long ago), is of great interest to me.

I've showcased three songs that I have done in the last year on a thread, located here:
    http://boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055357482

So, thanks for reading, you can now wake up. I look forward to posting here! :)

EDIT: If by music production, you mean solely hands on music making, then I have probably posted in the wrong area. My definition of music production is like a record producer's or a sound engineer's.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,472 ✭✭✭Rockshamrover

Hi, I have been on here a while but only came across this section recently.

Time to fess up. I've been into music for years now (I'm nearly as old as old man Brewer) Did the band thing way back in the 1980s would you believe, Got my first recording machine back then, a Tascam 244.

The band broke up and we all went our seperate ways and got married and stuff (does this sound familiar?)

Me and the Bass player still stayed in touch and would jam every now and then. Just over a year ago I decided to begin messing about with recording again so I got Logic Express, which was great. I recently upgraded to logic Pro and love it. Me and my buddy are very happy beavering away attempting to write some songs and record them as best we can.

The film rights to this moving story are not available as it's going straight to DVD.

    My Gear

    USA Fender Strat
    Gibson SG
    Aria Pro 11 Bass
    Novation Remote 49SL
    Apogee Duet (thanks Paul)
    IMAC 4GB RAM
    AKG C 1000 S Mic
M-Audio BX8A Monitors (I know nothing about monitors)
    Sennheiser HD 25-SP 11 Headphones.

Old and all as I am, I am still only getting to grips with the basics of recording but I have picked up an awful lot of tips and good advise (indirectly) from people on this site so thanks a lot and good luck.

    Rockshamrover.

    Bonoestente,

..... well I've been posting here for a little bit so figured that now I may as well use up loads of bandwidth and post a lengthy intro, so here goes ......

For my sins, of which there are many, I've been composing/recording & performing ambient electronic music/sound art type stuff for around 21 years. Before that it was mostly bedroom guitar playing though I did start a punk band in '77 that performed a single gig before being thrown out of the venue after a few songs (we were technically useless - plan: buy guitar, learn 3 chords, start band, live rock n' roll lifestyle, get laid lots).

Anyway, in recent years I've spent some regular time travelling, mostly in Australia and doing field recordings that I take back into the studio and slowly fashion with synths and stuff into something I hope is worthwhile for folks to listen to. To date this has resulted in a few albums and commissioned works for specialist radio and the occasional track on a compilation CD or two.

The last 'album project' (this is starting to sound like prog rock) was based on field recordings made while travelling from Perth, Western Australia all the way to the Blue Mountains, almost the entire width of Australia. This was released in early 2008 and I performed the album either in it's entirety or in part at various venues like St. Fin Barres cathedral, Cork, The Life Festival, and the Unsound Festival in Poland last October. All pretty enjoyable. Am I making money? No. Then again, very few people working in the ambient electronic field are making money. Having spoken to several 'household names' in this genre it's the case of working towards free holidays during the summer festival season. I can live with that (remember to pack speedos into laptop bag).

At the moment I've just started work on the next part of my Australian series of albums which will be based on travels in Queensland. I guess it could be June/July before anything there starts to resemble material I can test in a live setting before fine tuning back in the studio for eventual release. Along the way there are a few minor projects to complete including managing to get a somewhat acceptable mix on a piece I composed for the Plug4 festival in San Francisco in December '08 that worked perfectly live but has been a nightmare to mix due to me using new and unfamiliar tools, but that's rock n' roll.

As a studio set-up I've forced myself to keep things simple in that almost everything has to be able to fit into a single flight case so that I can take it with me while travelling. At the moment, that consists of a Toshiba laptop running a few DAW setups, m-audio fasttrack pro interface, Keyrig 25, Trigger Finger and a pair of KAM headphones. From a recording perspective I use an Edirol R-09HR recorder with most excellent Sennheiser powered HLSO-MICRO omni microphones from Microphone Madness. And that's the set-up I've taken to Australia, Poland, Scotland, Italy and back last year and along the way had great fun recording and performing.

Back home I've got a very basic mixing setup that's not worth going into as I'm only now starting to truly address this part of the equation, but I do have mid price monitors, small mixing desk, an instrument microphone or two, a multi effects processor and a comfy chair. It allows me to pretend that I'm Nigel Godrich on a Friday night when the lights are down, the red is breathing and the green is glowing.

Its' been almost 20 years since I was last in a proper recording studio though that could change this year if all goes according to plan (and the repo man continues to believe the 'beware of savage zombie' sign outside the front gate). I'm even taking some fun time out to do a basic night time studio engineering course just to get me out of the house and help me be able to communicate better with studio professionals when the need arises (I know what I want most of the time but have lived a lifetime of wanting 'everything louder than everything else [for those of us who grew up on Deep Purple]). Any mastering I've had done in recent years has been with Colin Bennun whose name probably means nothing to anyone unless they are into Psytrance and to those folks he'll be known as being part of the legendary UK band OOOD. I don't do psytrance but feel that he allows my music to move outside the regular atmospheric ambient drone sound I love listening to but want to avoid reproducing.

Anyway, that's the story and probably the longest intro you've had to endure in some time. I suppose I should pop a link up so as to completely destroy any semblance of travelling incognito :-)
    http://www.mixile.com
    the myspace thing : http://www.myspace.com/mixilemusic

and email: michael (at) mixile.com should get me along the way.

If any of the music production board folks have an interest in ambient and would like a free high res mp3 copy of my last album then drop me an email and I'll forward a link. I'd rather not just post a link here.

    Party on.

    Mick.

Been a long time boards reader on a range of subjects and just registered this morning so here goes.....

Been making music now since my early teens and have now reached the age where life is suppose to begin at (next person who says that to me is gonna get it!). Mine is much the same story as others here, used to play bass in a band in the 80's (if only I still had the hair) which broke up, got married and have 3 kids mortgage & loans to my eyeballs e.t.c
Been recording at home now for a few years with varying degrees of success but am always looking at ways to improve hopefully with the knowledge available on this forum.
    Gear consists of
    Aria pro 11 bass,
    Yamaha guitar,
    Roland midi keyboard,
    PC running Cubase SX3
    Aardvark Direct Pro 24/96
    Rode N3 mic
    KRK Rokit 5 Monitors
    Behringer pod thingy (horrible)
    Addictive Drums
    Kontakt 3
    Halion Player
    Steinberg Virtual Instruments Collection
Last, but by no means least, a nice comfy chair!

Would like to post some of my songs for critique soon
and would love to ditch my PC in favour of a MAC
    but thats for another discussion
    Cheers everyone

    Hi!

Long time lurker here, first time poster. Thought it was about I introduced myself.

So, my story is, I've been playing bass with my band since the tender age of about 13. We've been doing home recordings for some time now, so I started reading up on the subject, from miking to mastering and everything in between. At first this was only out of necessity, but gradually I started taking a serious interest in the subject.

Now, I've decided I'd like to get into this to a much bigger extent. I'm still reading everything I can get my meathooks into, and I'm doing a course after the summer to give myself a solid grounding in the subject.

In the not to distant future, the plan is to open a studio with another bandmate. Before that though, I'm going to do some more work with the band, and then possibly offer to record some of the local bands on our very modest home setup.

I won't bother listing all of my small selection of gear, but we basically record to a Boss BR1600-CD and mix in Cubase LE.

Anyway, that's my life story, and be ready for some very noobish questions :D
