I'm scarred for life, m8, with racing in your adopted country. My only experience was a baptism of fire in the Rotterdam marathon of 2011. Aimed for a 3.10 as you do and hobbled home in 3.32. Then proceeded to faint 3 times in the luxurious underground carpark of the hotel an hour later.

One thing I will say, the support was immense. People massaging the legs, tossing me spray for the calfs cramping and then the post fainting help was A1 as well.

So the jury's out for me and The Netherlands!

Maybe it was the same dude that gave my calves a rub about 38k in that park.....for all the good it did my death march to the finish line :)

I’ve gotten back into running big time since last November as a way of coping with stress and a breakup.

In December I ran my second ever 10km and achieved a time of 0:54:47, which I was chuffed with. Ideally this year I’d like to break 50 minutes. I’m running one this Sunday so hoping to improve on December’s time!

I ran my first half marathon in March and was just happy to finish it! I’m aiming to do a full marathon before the year is out. I dont’t have any particular time in mind, just to complete it is enough...for now.

I’m also doing a 5k series soon, and my PB at the moment is 0:24:58. By the end of it, I’d like to be as close to the 20 minute mark as possible.

There really are few better feelings than achieving your goals.

Well done on your progress so far. Theres a Marathon Novices thread on here that would be well worth getting involved in that will guide you through your first marathon. Usually kicks off in a couple of months I think. Ideal if you are running Dublin Marathon

It should be starting in the next week or two... it's been the beginning of May I think. As Swashbuckler says it's great for first time marathon runners.

Thanks for the encouragement folks, I’ll definitely look into that. I haven’t signed up for the Dublin marathon but I’d be hoping to maybe do one in Galway in October if I feel confident enough.

Goal is to sub 3:00. Current PB 3:17:31.

Doing Hamburg in April and Chicago in October.

Big ask but will be putting the work in.

Change of job from this time last year has freed up a lot of time for me due to shorter commute.

    Hamburg in the morning. (#2557).

Was hoping to knock a few mins off the PB but weather isn’t looking good. :(

No chance of subbing 3:00:00 but plan was to at least bite something off the PB ahead of October...

Got lazy after my daughter was born. Just looking to be consistent this year, hoping to build back up and give DCM a better go next year.

So first 30km or so in the rain.

Wind nearly made my hands fell off.

    Superb support on the course.

At 39km saw sub 3:10 was on.

    Nipped in with 3:09:51.

    Delighted!!

Hoping to sub 3:00:00 now in October in Chicago.

    Bring it on!!

Haul my fat ass around a 26.2 mile tour of London in April, hopefully under 5 hours.

Lose some weight - I'm a lot heavier than I was before kids! Size 16 running shorts aren't a good look.

100 parkruns t-shirt - I'm on 95 now. V25 too, I'm on 12 and I'm pacing at South Manchester parkrun with one of the kids in the buggy this weekend. Help hubby with Super Secret New Parkrun Setup too.

    Don't get injured.

Dont let my iron levels drop low again.

Encourage any toddler interest in running with mama, he already has a little pair of blue Asics just like daddy! He's 3 in March.

100th parkrun on 2 Feb in the snow! On 112 now.

Sub 5 in Manchester (4:51:01) but not in London (5:19:39). Waiting to see if the hip problem I had in London is a niggle or an injury.

Wearing more 14s than 16s, but still need big tops thanks to mother nature and her most generous gifts.

Been a long time since I posted goals like this son this forum :)

    A Goals
    1. Sub 3 - most likely DCM (entered) but I'll have a go at Limerick since its on my doorstep. 2019 is really all about the sub3
    2. National Masters Gala in March - My first ever Gala - Don't disgrace myself, just give it my best and do tumble turns! I'd love to get into 24:xx shape for the 1,500m
    B Goals
    • All pbs are up for grabs. 18:10 5k, 38:09 10k and 1:23:40 HM. I'd be delighted to beat any of those but realistically sub3 type fitness should put me the ballpark of sub19, sub40 and sub 1:26.
    • Stay healthy and injury free
    • Give up tea (swap for green tea) and sliced bread
Sub3 and Gala done. A goals complete!

Anything else this year is gravy

Wasn't one of my goals for the year, but contract with work finished up sooner than expected last week so did the Lima marathon this morning.

Snuck in at 3:19:57 (#2098). Tough hilly course, some winding parts too, and the heat from 26km on was unbearable.

Made it to 41.1km before I had to stop and walk for 50m.

Got my act together then, relatively speaking given the intensity of the heat, and just managed to sub 3:20:00 with a "I have no idea where I got that from" sprint over the last 300m.

Marathons done in Europe, Asia, Africa, and now South America.

    Next up, Chicago!

    Race Specific Targets;

    Marathon: Sub 2:50 (PB 2:58:01)
Looking like Dublin, but Berlin still could be a runner. Weighing up a couple of alternative entry routes & will decide one way or the other pretty soon. Either way hoping to give 2:50 a good rattle. - Full steam ahead for DCM!

Half Marathon: Sub 79 (PB 1:19:59)
Aiming for Limerick in May for first go at this. - Nope, DNF after 7 miles. Race Series Half prob the next attempt.

10 Mile: Sub 60 (PB 60:33) - Almost attempted a 10Mile TT but was talked down :) Will have to wait until Frank Duffy I'd say.

    10k: Sub 37 (PB 38:50ish)
Ran a 37:15 split in Frank Duffy in September, so will hopefully get under 37mins first and then maybe set another target. - 35:11 K Club, course short so maybe more like a 35:30, but had a good bit left in the tank at the end.

    5 Mile: Sub 28:30 (PB 29:51)
Raheny. January. Target. - Yep, 28:22 Raheny :)

5k: Run a decent 5k race at some stage in the next 12 months........really, that would do me. Don't really like the distance but I know there are a lot of benefits to racing over it.- I said a 'decent' 5k, so i'm going to say yes. MSB St Patricks 5k 17:34 course slightly long by most accounts so maybe a little faster than time suggests.

PBs are all from 2014 and not sure I’ll get to that level this year so I’ll set slightly softer goals. I’ll be 36 in February and haven’t got the base I used to have from football training.

    5k - 22.00 (pb 20.18, this year 24.14)
    10k - 46.30 (pb 44.47, this year 56.24)
    Half - 1.45 (pb 1.37.56)
    DCM - sub 4 (pb 4.00.39)

First goal of a 22.00 5k ticked off with 21.58 on Sunday. Didn’t think I’d be likely to hit that until after the marathon, so very happy with progress so far. I think the 10k and half will be harder to achieve, but will give them a bash. Might only have the one 10k this year, that’ll be the race series and I think it’s just two weeks after the Clontarf half so not sure how I’ll approach it.

No it's for everyone. The best refers to each person's best over each distance. It's not just for the 'best' runners.

Thanks a mill. It wasn’t so bad really in the end. There’s so many twists and turns that there was just the odd gust in places that would get you and you were never directly into it for too long. On roads where it was strong I tried to stay behind groups. Also it kind of cooled me down too. At least it was behind us going in the Straight Road. Would have been a different story running against it there.

I was close to 17 stone this time last year.........I'm down to 13 stone now and recently ran a 4 mile race in 28 mins 36 secs so I've decided a 18 minute 5km is my target for the remainder of 2019.

I'm very low mileage, I do my training in the gym (weights, pull ups, dips etc etc)...... I've only ran 52kms in 2019 & 136kms in the 4 years up to then, I'm 38 :)

:D:D ah no. I genuinely hadn’t put much thought into it at all. I looked at it last year and though I’ll never get those times so never really looked at it again. I barely knew what it was to be honest. We need to get more people in there now!!

Haven't put any aims on paper (so to speak) before but for 2019 I want to lose more weight. Currently, I've lost 11 lbs on the year. Do more parkruns. I did 11 this year, compared to 7 total pre-2018. I'd like to do maybe 30+. Staying injury free is the biggest challenge. Maybe running sub 28 might be possible with more weight loss and consistent running. (Reduced Parkrun PB from 30:05 to 29:22 this year).

    Mid-year review:

Parkruns done so far this year: 17, so on course.

Parkrun PB: improved from 29:22 to 28:35

    Injury free? Forget it. :o

Weight: I'm literally the same weight as I was on NYE. :(

Volunteered a few more times, too.

    Not too bad, I suppose.

Did my first race in 2 years, after 7 months of training and two months gym work decided to do the Bettytown 5 mile race. Felt 40 mins was in reach. Finished in 40:11 definitely think the strenght training is paying off.
