What is the "XFactor" which makes the X-factor the massive phenomenon which it is today?

Honestly, talent shows have been around from the advent of tv and beyond. What is it that makes this particular show so big, almost millenium defining. I just can't put my finger on it.

Talent shows have existed for years.
It's the sadism involved in public (very public) humiliation, schadenfreude etc.

Public humiliation like that has existed in many forms in every culture, be it public execution or the frequent throwing of fruit at dreadful plays in the past.

Because people are stupid and cant be trusted:p

In the enlightened words of Super Hans:
People like Coldplay and voted for the Nazis. You can't trust people, Jeremy

Because they juxtapose the very good and the very bad, average does not get a look in.
