Hi all,
Vanilla are planning an update to the site on April 24th (next Wednesday). It is a major PHP8 update which is expected to boost performance across the site. The site will be down from 7pm and it is expected to take about an hour to complete. We appreciate your patience during the update.

    He runs the pathfinder school teaching survival and self reliance in Ohio. Used to do 'dual survival' but now just puts all his knowledge on video and you tubes it for free. All videos are recommended but 'journal of the yurt' I found excellent, he puts up a yurt, and lives in it for a month (I think),heads up to his house (200 yards away) when his grand kids come over and to see his wife!! Does equipment reviews, shelters, fire starting, trapping, fishing, hunting and guns but doesn't over do the guns. Looks like a good shop at pathfinder.com too but I haven't bought anything yet (I'm angling for the stainless bottle and cup set for crimbo). IMO, a good source for videos and common man advice! (or common woman, as the case may be)

    Easiest way to carry a decent length of cord: http://www.instructables.com/id/Double-Cobra-Knot-Paracord-Belt/

    I've been wearing that belt for a few months now. 100' of cord in it - 2*40' sections and 2*10'. Only problem is unraveling if if you need it. But if you need that length of cord you can do without a belt. I used a crappy old buckle from a canvas belt that came with a pair of old jeans. The belt cost me about a fiver + time spent making it. If you need smaller lengths of cord just wear a bracelet.

    This will be my next belt. It unravels just by undoing one end and pulling on it. Main problem with this one is that you have to get the measurements just right or you have a belt too loose or too tight. tbh I'm happier with a buckle and have the emergency whistle on a bracelet or tied to the shoulder strap on the bag.

    Looked like it was going to be a handy link but not a recording station within 20 miles of us :mad:

    So I'll have to stick to a piece of seaweed a pine cone, met.ie and Easytide to guess at our chances of flooding.

    tbh I find it hard to believe any data the epa produces. Our river is flooded with slurry every time we get heavy rain it has a massive "local" dumping area just up stream from us and I've seen it running white with dumped milk. The nearest farm has a leak in its slurry containment system and the farmer has piped the overflow into a stream that runs in to the river (its being investigated :D). Same river comes out in the epa tests (2-3 tests a year) as being very clean. Go a mile or so upstream and their is an old dam thats holding back thousands apon thousands of gallons of anaerobic black sludge, yet all the epa are interested in is a plastic milk bottle full of water from the same spot 2-3 times a year.

    epa data is a bit like the NCT - it only relates to the time of testing.

    Unfortunatley, that's the reality of most environmental sampling. With the complex set of parameters concerned with water, it is unfeasible to have an online analyser for all parameters or to take composite samples.

    Air quality data however, can be a little more representative, as continuous samplers may be set up to take pumped or passive samplers over time.

    The air quality is sampled automatically and updated daily. There are graphs available for historic results also. Your point about water quality standards notwithstanding.

    For those of you on the BookFace, (and who don't already know about it), there is a page called 'Homesteading Self Sufficiency Survival' which gives some pretty good tips on ...well, self sufficiency! 271k followers can't be wrong ;) Lots of great tips for medicinal uses for plants and herbs, how to make anything from anything, preserving, book recs etc. Well worth a gander I think.
