Hi all,
Vanilla are planning an update to the site on April 24th (next Wednesday). It is a major PHP8 update which is expected to boost performance across the site. The site will be down from 7pm and it is expected to take about an hour to complete. We appreciate your patience during the update.

Custom Rifle

    A bit sheepish posting this but anyway... I have strong notions of getting myself a custom rifle this year in 223. I have no illusions about my abilities and I’d say a Sako 85 in a McMillan would be loads of gun for me however being a citóg the bolt on the wrong side would just annoy me if I’m getting custom work done. Tikka don’t seem to do a heavy barrel .223 so I’m thinking what’d be the point to buy one purely as an action donor plus I don’t like the plastic mags. Other option would be a M595 second hand. Again though I’d be paying circa €1,200ish (seen one in the UK for £875).

    Couple of questions:

    So is a custom action the way forward? (I know I’ll need trigger bottom metal that the above M595 would come with)

    Rough custom action cost, I know how long is a bit of string but the lower end of the scale?

    Is a custom .223 a bit pointless?

    Sort of thinking about a single shot, again am I daft?

    Should I get it steel proofed?:pac:

    What’s the intended purpose?
    You’re limited with factory rifles by being left handed.

    Tikka offer left hand versions of the CTR, Tac A1 and Sporter in .223 according to their website. Doubt there’s any on shelves so probably special orders.

    I’d consider a custom action if you specifically wanted a short action. I’ve been down the custom .204/.223 route built on tikka and Sako actions, custom barrels and changed the stock. Beautiful rifles and shot extraordinarily but not any better than a quality factory rifle.

    The tikka T3x varmint, stainless varmint, and Tac a1 are all available in left hand so you could buy one of those. There are plenty of stocks available for tikka t3 rifles now if you wanted to upgrade later.
    If you want to put a custom barrel on a tikka action you would be better off with a T3 rather than the 595 as there is a better choice of aftermarket parts available.
    My mate has a tikka T3x tac 223 in a krg bravo chassis and it shoots great.
    Custom actions are nice but they can be expensive.

    Thanks very much for the replies gents. I don't know how I missed the Tikka CTR when playing around with the rifle selector on the website.

    Intended purpose is the range at 300 with the odd venture to the 600 line Plus a few crows/rabbits although I've no rabbit ground at the moment. It'd be replacing a Remington 700 VSF which I picked up for handy enough money, put in a Timney Calvin Elite. Lovely accurate rifle that I can't fault and I'd stay with it if the bolt was on the right side for me. A KRG Bravo and a barrel in a tighter twist and I'd be happy out. I'd be afraid of investing in it and still have the bolt be niggling at me. Funny with my Sako TRG it doesn't bother me, bigger heavier setup and slicker bolt being the difference I suppose.

    I also have a trg and a couple of bravo chassis on other rifles and the bravo stocks feel similar to the trg.
    They don't make a left hand chassis for the tikka but I read that its easy enough to convert one. Think its only a matter of cutting a slot for the bolt.

    You hardly have the TRG bipod? If so does it fit the Bravo?

    I don't.
    I have one of the forteimer ones.
    It uses a Parker hale type fitting that bolts into the slot in the trg. The bravo has a slot as well and I have the same fitting in them .

    Thanks for chiming in gents. Unfortunatly between plans for a new wagon and sorting the garden this year the rifle will be on the back burner for this year :(
