I`m starting a FAS course next month in PC Repair and although I was in FAS twice talking to someone they did not explain how it works fully. Now he said that the waiting list was`nt to big, so when the time comes around, whats happens? Do I just go there, or is there a letter sent out before hand, how do I sort it out with my dole? Has anyone else been through the process? Any info would be great.

done the tralee course three years ago and it great

i was more into the production stuff and the trianing is class but you only get what you put into it

theres top of the line stuff from jimmy jib cranes, steadycam, dolly and track, when i was down there we have 5 sony 450, a sony 300, z1, jvc101 and a few other camera there were 18 of use and it was 3 to a edit suit FCP and the team work was great.

i think they have a new studio set up since i was down there last as well.

most of the ones that did the course with me got some work out of it, but its all about what you put into it

Hi, so I basically joined boards just to talk to someone on this thread. Hoping one of you can share some nuggets of wisdom :D

I started reading at the very start of the thread, thinking it was only polite but it was all from 2005 so I gave up! I'll give you the details though, as per mycroft (was that his name? Sorry!):

Duration you'd be interested in doing the course for?: As long as it takes, but I suppose part of my question is, is it a big deal if you only do a two year course? I've my eye on the one in BCFE (TV/Film) but I'll have already done a BA in something stupidly academic, which means I'd have to pay fees. So ideally, it'd be something I could finance with a part time job, and possibly a loan. If BCFE is worth it, I'd go for it. Money is the last thing on my mind if it's going to pay back.

Your current skill level? (Software used etc) I currently mostly just occupy myself with editing and I use iMovie cos I'm poor and can't afford Avid or FCP. :pac: I have an inherited HDD camcorder, which admittedly is absolute pants, but hey.

What you hope to get out of it? I do a lot of SLR photography just to get use to composition really. I am interested more in cinematography than photography. A moving image appeals more to me. I am not half bad at writing short stories but have never tried my hand at screenwriting. I THINK I want to do something technical/operations, but I think that's cos I'm afraid of the uphill struggle of screenwriting. Directing is not for me, I'm not much for public relations. So really I think camera operation and editing are where I want to be, but part of me wants to do a general film course incase I develop an interest in another area throughout the course.

Also, can anyone give me any ideas as to how flashy an entrance portfolio has to be? I am the only person I've ever met with an interest in such things, so I can't go making shorts with my mates on the weekends, I have done some amateur editing, I can show photos and short stories. What did you lot put in yours? Do you think the standards will be much higher since these days everyone's got cameras and iMacs?

Sorry it was so longwinded! I would really appreciate ANY responses! Thank you so much :)

    Penny

Hey penny i did the fas course in 2006/2007 and its a great way to get into video production not so great for film.

My portfolio for the course was made up the night before the interview with a few pints onboard (had just fins Photography exams that night) if you can show you have a eye and some tec skills thats what they want.

It is a hard course to get into but if you talk irish theres a video production course somewhere in the west of ireland.

fcp is costly (but if you get someone at college to buy it its only around 300 same with avid) fcp better and has a lot more in it ie dvd maker, sound track pro, colour etc.

the fas course is free and you get payed for doing it :D but it relly is hard work If you do want to get into video production its great (i work as a camera-man in the dail at the mo) but make sure its what you want because its a lot of latenight eary morings and poor if any pay:eek: but if you love your job you never work a day in your life eh

if you need to know anything else contact me

and have a look at these 4 websites

    www.iantboyle.com

www.thecovies.com Everone on this worked for free

    www.filmmakersnetwork.ie

    www.creativecow.net

    hope this helps

What is the 4th year rate now for any apprentices in plastering when you go into fas for your theory and practical part of the course? Ive heard its dropped a awful lot? The fas website hasn't been updated to the current rates that they are giving

    Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone can give me advice. I am currently finishing a degree (which I have no prospect of getting a job out of now) and I was looking into doing an 8 week FAS course during the summer. Will I have to pay for this myself because I have a degree? and if not will i get the weekly allowance from FAS or do I have to be on jobseekers.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi

I know some Fas courses have already been discussed on this thread but some were posted a few years ago and id like some more recent feedback. I'm interested in doing the Interactive media course in Tralee and i'm just wondering if anyone knows if its any good? I like the idea of being able to touch on alot of the different fields within media and explore the different mediums, as well as it being for just a year. Is there any other similar courses out there, anywhere in Ireland that are good?

I enjoy working with the adobe suite applications but am excited at doing film and sound also as ive never tried these, i love sketching and have no experience in the multi-media area.

    Any feedback will be appreciated.

    Thanks

The course in ballyfermot is a great course.

Its geared specifically towards people who wish to become operators in the industry rather than the producer/director type of courses on offer in Dun Laoghire and DIT.

John is a legend of a lecturer too :)
On top of that, by next year their multi million euro TV studio/control room/editing suites should be relativelty up and running. You won't be able to pry John away from them...

just back to the fas course
there are digital media, film and video production and audio production courses running out of the Tralee fas Training center the I did the digital media course year before last it involved flash, director, premiere, Digital Video Digital photography and was quiet good we would socialise with the digital video crowd . and were given tour of their facilities pretty impressive for a course that you don't have to pay for. 6 production kits (for 18 people) full TV studio kit and video production lab. and some other stuff we weren't alloed see. course runs for nearly 12 months and they organise work experience for you. some of the people I know in that are back in tralee and have started a production company one was working in tnag another was in film so they seem to be doing alright.

the audio production is run out of a recording studio near ballyheigue just north of Tralee.

you get a fas training allowance and rent allowance and access to a subsidised canteen. definitely it was one great year. one of the guys on my course was staying in student apartments and with rent allowance it was costing him 30 euro per week he got internet access and heat with that afaik you won't go crazy on that money but its not means tested so it beats a kick in the head. there is alot of accomodation in tralee so you might get cheaper somewhere else.

Wow, that sounds great! I was thinking about applying for this, but the distance thing is kind of putting me off... what kind of people were on the course with you? Were they college graduates mostly or was it a wide range of ages and backgrounds? Did you need a showreel to get in? And at what point in the year do you get put in a work placement? :)

Sorry, a lot of questions I know, but I'm just trying to make the right decision!

    Hi
I've been offered a palace on the FAS Tralee Interactive Media course, just wondering has anyone finished it recently and what did you think of it?
Did you get a job after?
What age group where the people that did the course? all just 20 somethings or any older people?
and whats Tralee like to live in?
It would be a big commitment and huge change for me away from all my friends so I'm just wondering is it worth the move?
What was the course like? and if ye were happy doing the course and spending a whole year in Tralee. ( I don't drive, so it's a bit of a handicapp )
    :confused:confused::confused::confused:
    Any advice welcome please TAA

    :)

Many people have had their fill of academic, classroom based learning by the time the Leaving Cert exams are done and dusted. Ireland’s national training and employment authority, FÁS (www.fas.ie), provides these school leavers with the opportunity to earn an internationally recognised qualification by learning a craft or training for a career – all while simultaneously earning a wage.

I went to college in IT Tralee for one year over 2000/2001 so my advice might be dated but I found it cheap, cheerful, and a good arts scene there for what I was into (djing/campus radio at the IT). Good fun to go out there notwithstanding the odd rough and tumble with the locals. I made great friends and there was a general good vibe.

I was 20 at the time so I don't know what it would be like for someone more mature.

Well connected with public transport to the rest of the country too, and small enough to walk anywhere around the town and "suburbs".

    Hey,
I finished up the Tv and Video Production course in Tralee last October. I couldn't say better things about it really. I learned more in 1 year than I would have learned in 5 years on my own. I met an amazing group of people and we all became really close since we were working long hours together. It's practical, you get to go on some seriously fun adventures, you create a 30 minute live show and you gather loads of footage for your showreel.
As for moving to Tralee, yeah I didn't know what to expect either, but I love the beach so I found a caravan park about 20 minutes outside of town and moved in there for the year. It was bliss! An unforgettable year.

I proposed a thread for a professional film workshop, it was not supported, and taken down, due to lack of interest, fair enough.

There were 68 episodes of Game of Thrones, shot over ten years.

NI Screen has an Annual budget of £10 million. Not one Cameraman from N.Ireland shot an episode.
