Hi all,
Vanilla are planning an update to the site on April 24th (next Wednesday). It is a major PHP8 update which is expected to boost performance across the site. The site will be down from 7pm and it is expected to take about an hour to complete. We appreciate your patience during the update.

    hi there,
    ok need some help
    you know the way you when you use "ár,bhur,a" for example
    ár gcóta or bhur gcóta or a gcóta what tense would you use this for?
    how come it changes when you use ár scoil...

    Those words don't change depending on the tense in which they're used; they're possessive adjectives. Depending on which one you're using, the next word will change slightly - for example a can mean his or her.

    Mo - my - next word take a séimhiú (h); if the next word starts with a vowel use m'
    Do - your - next word take a séimhiú (h); if the next word starts with a vowel use d'
    A - his - next word take a séimhiú (h); no change if it starts with a vowel
    A - her - no change to next word if it starts with a consonant; takes h if it starts with a vowel
    Ár - our - next word takes an urú
    Bhur - your (plural) - next word takes an urú
    A - their - next word takes an urú

    An urú is a letter that gets placed in front of another letter. Here's the list of which urú each letter takes:

    Vowels: all take n

    e.g. our name = ár n-ainm

    B: takes a m in front of it
    C: takes a g in front of it
    D: takes an n in front of it
    F: take bh in front of it
    G: takes an n in front of it
    P: takes a b in front of it
    T: takes a d in front of it

    Any letters that aren't listed don't take urús.

    when you are using ''a'' for their and the word cant take an urú

    how do you distinguish it from being interpreted as ''her''?

    thats a good point
    ok so if i say "her cat" its "a cat"
    and if i say "their cat" its "a gcat"?

    urú is another word for eclipse.
    b - mb
    c - gc
    d - nd
    f - bhf
    g - ng
    p - bp
    t - dt

    a pheann - his pen (tá sé ina chónaí)

    a peann - her pen (tá sí ina cónaí)

    a bpeann - their pen (tá siad ina gcónaí)
