does anyone know if a clothing item purchased at one TKMaxx can be returned for a refund at a TKMaxx in a different city? (with receipt, not a defective item but just wrong size/decided doesn't fit well)

always far easier to check a retailers website where such information is usually available

    Return policy
It is very easy to return something you have bought in store

Return your purchase to us in store within 28 days of purchase with a receipt as proof of purchase for a refund. Gift receipts can be used to return an item for an exchange or gift card but not for a refund.
Merchandise must be unused and in its original condition including packaging and labelling.
Pierced jewellery and gift cards are excluded from our returns policy and cannot be returned. (Gift cards purchased online are subject to separate terms and conditions- see the gift card page for details)
If you paid by credit or debit card any refund must go to the card you used to purchase. If you paid by gift card the refund will go onto another gift card.
Items should be returned to TK Maxx stores in the country of original purchase only.

Basically, once you return it to a store in Ireland, you're fine.

Does the 28 days return stand strong?

GF purchased an item on 3rd July which is defective (hasn't worked since purchase) and just genuinely hasn't had a chance to bring it back. I'm telling her to bring it back. Worst case scenario they'll probably give her store credit to the value.

The 28 day limit legally can only apply to "change of mind" returns, and any "extra" right over and above your legal entitlements that they have given.

Many stores have extended return windows due to COVID-19, give them a buzz, maybe they have also.

Defective products have legal protection well above store policies and store credit is not an acceptable outcome. Retailer can chose repair (which must be effective), replacement (which must work) or refund
