Just got a few maps throught the OSI partner the National Map Centre

    http://www.irishmaps.ie/index.cfm

    Ordered Tuesday, delivered Thursday

Got 3 Discovery series (1:50,000) all what they described as 'water resistant' which is lightly laminated at €22=50 each, expensive but better than the map disintegrating in the rain on a hill side:D

    Travel Insurance
Travel Insurance is vital if your leaving the country. Injuries and rescue operations can be expensive abroad as can getting the proper medical care. For outdoor activities I can recommend:
    • The BMC - You have to be a member of the BMC or the MCI to quailify but its outstanding cover. I always use this.
    • Snowcard - I know a number of skiers/snowboarders who recommend this company (UK Residents Only)
    • The Foundry - based in Sheffield. Apparently they do climbing trip insurance but I had a look at the site and couldn't find any reference to it.

    Learning to climb
There are a number of options available for the aspiring climber. These are based around Dublin as that's where I'm based and don't know what else is out there but would love to hear so add your €0.02. I'd also advice new climbers to try it out with Tiglin or another outdoor adventure place and if you like it join a club and learn through them. You can all the courses in the world but if you're not out climbing regularly preferably with experienced people it's pointless.
    • Tiglin - do a number of rock climbing courses from total beginner to the improving climber.
    • Irish Mountaineering Club - run courses every year at the start of the climbing season (too late for 2005). I have to say I joined this club as an intermediate level climber and the standard of people who started with the IMC is excellent.
    • Tollymore Mountain Centre - Similiar to Tiglin but based in the Mournes instead of Wicklow.
    • UCD in Dublin - don't have contact details at they moment but the do lessons for beginners. Ask at the climbing wall in the sports complex.
    • University Mountaineering Clubs - most uniiversities have a climbing club. Join up if you're a student and get to use all the gear for free. You may even get to shag someone :)

here is a club which me a first time hillwalker walked with(dublin based):
    http://www.anoige.ie/ // main page
    http://www.anoige.ie/calendar/hillwalking //hill walking events

I had a great time, it was easy to go with them, friendly nice people. they do lots of easy, moderate and hard hikes, every sunday and sum other days to.

you dont need to join anything to go, just show up with 10 euro and a pair of hard shoes or day hikers.

    ps: wear thick socks :)
if you can get day hikers its worth it, my feet were sore by the end of the day.

    • Dial 999/112 and as for Mountain Rescue.
    • You will be connected to a Garda control centre who will notify the appropriate Mountain Rescue Team.
    • Tell them where you are (grid reference if possible) and the nature of the incident.
    • If an ambulance is required the Garda or Rescue Team will ensure one is provided. You do not need to call one yourself.
    • Stay by the phone or in a place where you can receive a signal on your mobile phone.
    • A Rescue Controller will call you back at the number you have given.
    • They will take further details and mobilise the team who will be with you as quickly as possible.
