You would have to insure it as a main car.
Best try and get your test would be a huge help
yeah im hoping to do my test as soon as i can. but you see my main car would be a 93 corolla 1.4. i looked at insuring the two of them but i just cant afford it. Ive been thinking since though...could my grandmother get the policy in her name with me as a named driver?? She doesnt have a car and shes a fully licenced named driver on my grandfathers policy for the last 50 odd years or is this worth even looking into?

This is discrimination at its highest..firstly insurance costs me more beause im male..secondly insurance costs e more again because im under 25..cant wait to be old!!! no offense!!:L

Does anyone know if being on a company car policy and having a company car can qualify you to insure a classic cheaply with limited mileage?

    Dunno, sorry.

It is possible though if you are a named driver on your partners car!

I was told a few years ago the second car had to belong to your "spouse", rather than your partner.

Unconstitutional I'm sure, but you might want to check it, colm_mcm.

Do IVS only insure your classic as a "second" car?

    Mike.
I think so, i have my chevette insured with them, and i needed another policy to insure it under and had to get a garage report done on the car, they send you the form, the garage fills it in and they have to put their stamp on it,its like a mini NCT:Dbut it wasnt a problem after that,180eu last year i think 3rd party with a 5000mile limit, which i wouldnt even come close to doing, and they are very friendly and professional people in the IVS. I have my datsun 100A with FBD, 3rd party only,360eu for the year, but they didnt want a garage report, they insured me there and then no problem at all.

Cheers for the feedback. If I ever do get round to a classic it looks like my, ahem 'everyday car' will be a 1 litre trolley.

    Mike.

Some have called my datsun the same!!:D:D

I was thinking about buying a mkII escort and running it under classic insurance. However the 1 thing I am wondering about is how do insurance companies respond to cars with modifications?
Do they insure at all or charge a hefty premimum?
Is there a certain limit with regard to what modifications you could get away with and certain ones you will not?

That's probably still the case. Thanks for clarifying!

Um, you have no chance methinks. If you even could get a quote it would be exorbitant - and not as a classic. Blues.

For the older amongst us - I got my renewal quote from AXA for the SL last week and rang around the usual places to see if I could save anything (First Ireland, Carole Nash etc.) None were able to compete. No garage, and no mileage limit were my criteria.

here's a question to challenge the brightest among you....totally hypathetical and a fantasy at the mo but any info will still be greatly appreciated. Dynacorn International Ltd have started ,in the last couple of years, manufacturing 67/68 mustang shells with the approval of Ford...now, with these, it maybe (good chance m livin in a dream here!!) possible to get the shell with a right hand drive lay-out. And then I would be adding all the bits and pieces myself.....big project...but lets suppose for a while that its completely feasible....this 2008 produced car.....for insurance purposes...modified classic?? kit car?

    it's nice to dream!

ok i know youve answered a few of these, BUT im ganna try again

Im a 21 year ild female with 1 year no claims on her own policy and i just got a 1978 MGB (1.8 L) roadster and am looking for insurance in Ireland, does anyone think I can get this and who will do me insurance?????????
    :(:(

  • Registered Users Posts: 11,318 ✭✭✭✭carchaeologist

Could be a tough one, though being female might help you, best thing to do is ring around and see how you get on. Best of luck with it:D

its like a blunt stick in the eye ball, you get this amazing car, and they dont want to let you drive it!

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 25,558 Mod ✭✭✭✭Dades

I would have thought you'd get a reasonable non-classic quote on that car. Female driver, small engine, not huge value.

Just because it's a "classic" doesn't mean it has to be insured on a classic policy. Cheap tax is the big saving in reality. AXA gave me a normal policy on a classic.

Let us know how you get on. :)

Just wondering if anyone knows can i get insured as a named driver on a classic. Its a MGB Roadster 1.8l and my dad has classic insurance on it(with hibernian). Im 20 male with a Full licence. Is there any hope out there for insurance, regardless of price?

I thought we came to the conclusion some time ago that the two insurers that didn't have an maximum vehicle age limit for standard car policies were AXA and Hibernian. There may be other brokers offering such cover, but I bet they're underwritten by AXA or Hibernian.

My car is 35 years old and insured with AXA. It's on a regular policy as it's my daily driver and I didn't want a mileage restriction on it.

I tried both of those, neither would quote because of old car and young girl.

I hate this country, I have no problem getting insured in England. Ireand has it's own stupid rules.

Thanks for the help though, but moms given u trying. Were ganna try and keep me insured in ENgland for the next couple of months, seeing as Im ganna be living there in May anyway, only problem is the car has already been here 3 months, dunno if they will let me

Did you try First Ireland? In hindsight I think it was these guys that insured a classic I had as a normal driver (same reason as macplaxton).

  • Registered Users Posts: 523 ✭✭✭Lauder

Just been insured on my MGB roadster by First Ireland, i am only 20, licence for 1 month, insured as a normal car (not a classic policy) for €1460. happy enough with it. my main car 2.0TDi Passat cost me €1800 odd.

so they will ensure a cassic, under a normal policy?
    how old is your roadster?

Hi All, I have an insurance related question for ye that doesn't really deserve its own thread..

I have an E30 BMW 325i convertible. Its used only during the fine weather and I do about 4000 miles during the summer. I have another car as my "daily driver" on a separate policy.

My question is, does anyone know a company or broker that might consider an E30 Convertible as a classic? Most of the classic insurance companies have a stipulation that the car be 20 or more years old. Mine is a 1992, nearly the last of that line..

If anyone has any ideas I'd be grateful.

    Thanks
    Mac

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 25,558 Mod ✭✭✭✭Dades

Although the 20yr rule isn't set in stone, I really don't think you have a chance of getting a classic policy for a '92 car. If you had a fleet of other classics, maybe, but really they will just look on it as a second car.

    Lovely motor though. :)

Thanks for the reply Dades, thought there might have been some company that saw an opening. The term "Future Classics" hasn't caught on here yet and probably never will.

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 25,558 Mod ✭✭✭✭Dades

Of course there's no harm in asking when you are researching a quote!

That car will be an actual classic in 4-5 yrs. Before Beemers started looking like every other saloon.

Don't forget to mention where you got their details (i.e. give them the www.boards.ie address !;) )...........it may just lead to some of their members signing up to this forum - which would be great !

    Silvera.

P.S. €845 for a 3 litre car (in everyday use!) doesn't sound too bad to me !

Ho Hum, AXA covered my 94 968 full comp for...........604. That's even better !
