Scoring 5 points for an 11th place finish we have
    MicksJag
for Holding Out For A Hero

Barney's Comments: Not entirely sure how this one relates to food, but maybe it does for someone. If it is for the gingerbread man in Shrek then fair paly on that link. Really like the song though, apart from the ending because the chorus isn't my favourite part of it

Kingsley's Comments: A good solid, goshdarn tune. Really one for MeToo era me thinks ;) I do really love this song and there is nothing at all wrong with anyone holding on for someone to rescue them if they so choose. For the theme.......if the gingerbread man in the Shrek video is the link to food then

With the third spot on the podium now being claimed we have
    Kev
picking up 13 points with Chocolate Jesus by Tom Waits

Barney's Comments: That's a fantastic title, so brownie points there. I really liked it up to around half way and didn't like some of the instrumental stuff. I did like the singer though and some of the lines are very good.

Kingsley's Comments: Love me some Tom Waits and really like this song. There is such a nice flow to it and absolutely on the money with the theme. When I saw that Tom Waits had been picked for this round I really hoped it would be "Ice Cream Man". That would have been top marks but this is pretty darn good too.

Great track Kev. Glad you enjoyed Michael Franks...ah but the Candy Man and Sammy Davis jnr is a classic!

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,428 ✭✭✭MrKingsley

And in 8th place scoring a nice and symmetrical 8 points is
    Spook
with The Onion Songby Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell

Barney's Comments: I was intrigued as to whether this was going to be a serious or jokey song. I can get behind it, I like the lyrics and the idea of the world being a great big onion. It's not my favourite of the songs but it's a good one.

Kingsley's Comments: I have heard this song on numerous occasions before but never knew they were comparing the world to an onion! It's a very nice song, sung by two beautiful singers but I am left wanting more from it. It seems to be building to a big crescendo but then it just flatlines for me.

Yeah it is a classic alright and I really want to like it but never have been able to. Maybe the Simpsons ruined it a bit for me

So picking up a juicy 12 points for a fourth place finish is
    Tusk
with this Kygo Sexual Healing Remix

Barney's Comments: I like a good kygo remix, it's not immediately clear to me the food connection but the sender indicates it would be a barbecue theme which I can see. Not sure I'd have it myself but I do like the song.

Kingsley's Comments: I've heard this remix a lot but I do really love it. Theme-wise if the sender says it gives them BBQ vibes then who am I to argue with that but just can't give it top marks compared to some of the other entries in this round.

We have our first bogey of the competition.

So as per game rules myself and Barney each picked a bogey song for each category (prior to entries being sent in of course). This song may have been one that we felt was too obvious, really disliked or a combination of each. In this case it was a combination of both for me.

The punishment is a drop of 3 places for the round.

    Oh thank jaysus.

When I saw all the other songs with actual food in the title I fully expected last place.

Full disclosure, first time I heard this was at a BBQ in my aunties new house in Wexford. Drinking desperados on the decking eating slow cooked barbeque brisket. The sunset was immaculate. I can't hear that song without that memory popping up. Good times.

In a final resting spot of 13th place is
    Necrina-mania
with Sugar, Sugar by The Archies

Barney's Comments: I do like this song. I think it gets a tad repititive but I do enjoy it.

Kingsley's Comments: Oh boy. Here we go. BOGEY SONG ALERT!!!!!! When this category came up discussion with Barney this song instantly came into my head. i have never liked it. If it ever comes on it will get skipped within 30 seconds..............however.............I listened to its in its entirety a few times for the sake of fairness. And I must say it gets better as it goes on. I just hate the chorus so much! For that reason I have given it a semi respectable score.

To be fair we did say in the Category description that if it gave you memories of food that would be fine. You explanation in your submission helped as well. Just can't mark it the same as a Chocolate Jesus for example. That's a pretty high (chocolate) bar

Right so we are down to the final 4. I am going to get myself a coffee and I'll be back chatting to myself here in 10/15

You're flying here Kingsley, I don't even know who entered the top two and bottom two so I'm somewhat in the dark here too.

You all have driven me to food, having a bowl of rice pudding and spiced plums. Enjoying the reveal.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,428 ✭✭✭MrKingsley

So I'm actually well ahead of schedule so no need to rush the good stuff.

So in second-to-last place and picking up 2 points is
    Drumpot
    with Blackout by Muse.

Barney's Comments: This is another that doesn't scream food to me, but does for the sender. The song just doesn't grab me at all unfortunately. Felt like it was going to burst into life around half way through but it didn't and the sort of static-y sound just kept going which I didn't like at all at all.

Kingsley's Comments: Riiiiiiiiiiight. So lets start with the theme. In the senders own words this song reminds them of Hannibal lector chowing down on some human flesh. Im struggling to not gve 1/5 for that but beauty is in the eye of the beholder I suppose. Now the song. Do you know what? I thought this was boring as flip the first couple of times but it really is growing on me. This will certainly be making it onto one of my playlists after the Walrus.

The silver medal of the round goes to
    Prisca
and they pick themselves up a splendid 14 points for I Like Pie, I Like Cake by The Four Clefs

Barney's Comments: I could see myself swing dancing to this alright, it's got a nice beat. I'm not so sure of the lyrics but I like the music.

Kingsley's Comments: I love pie and I love cake and boy oh boy do I love this song. No more needs to be said.

So in each round someone has to come last unfortunately and collecting 1 point is
    LavarBurton
with their selection of Threw It On The Ground by The Lonely Island

Barney's Comments: Oh I don't like this singer's voice, or the backing "noises". Sorry, but I really just don't get the song at all. The cell-phone verse was a particular low point for me.

Kingsley's Comments: So I really like Andy Samberg on TV but I've always had a love/hate with The Lonely Island. This one definitely falls into the latter category. I do not like it at all.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,906 ✭✭✭Barney92

Me when I heard that Andy Samberg was involved in this.

And coming in at the top spot is
    Trigger
with their splendid selection of Junk Food Junkie by Larry Groce

Barney's Comments: Oh I do like this, head was bobbing along from the start. I think it is clever and the delivery is good. Then there is the nice music in the background. This one is going to do well with me at least.

Kingsley's Comments: Oh yes oh yes oh yes. I absolutely love this. This is exactly the type of music that I could put on at any time and it would have me instantly moving. Love the beat, story and lyrics. It's for songs like this that I wanted to run a walrus. Game over. Full marks

I knew Lonely Island would be a massive risk, so I was willing to suffer the consequences on this round and take a punt.

I wonder if I should've gone with my second choice... also a big risk I think (it's a real love or hate one)...

Highlights of this round for me:

osh - this was probably my favourite overall. Would've had it in first place.

Green&Red - great choice, would've made my Top 3 easily.

Pretzill - sounds like something they'd use in an '80s porno, but its a class tune.

phatkev - can't beat a bit of Tom Waits!

    Tusk - that's a really great remix.

Drumpot - you were robbed, love Muse, great song, and I would've given you bonus points for the Hannibal connection.

Trigger - I really like it. A worthy winner, even if there were one or two I liked better personally.
