Hi all,

washing machine belt slipping

    Hi,
    Hoover branded washing machine recently started making funny noise and I could smell burning rubber.
    Googled it and seemed it was the belt on the drum for spinning (drum stopped spinning on spin cycle)
    Put the belt back on an got a few days out of it.
    Ran a small wash this morning and it slipped again.
    There is a load of black (from the rubber) on the back of the machine when I take the cover off , seems like the belt is dragging on something but seems fine when I rotate the drum by hand.

    Also just for info, there were a few times over the past weeks where it didn't drain.

    Question is, is it worth repairing?
    Would a new belt do the trick?
    It was a refurb that we got a year ago, only paid 160 for it.
    any advice greatly appreciated.

    if it was slow to empty have you checked the pump filter for blockages, as regards the slipping belt does it look worn or pieces shredded from it, rarely do belts slip nowadays . if all looks ok I would suspect that the drum bearings are on the way out

    got a new belt and still the same problem.
    The machine is draining now ok but still the belt is slipping.

    Someone suggested the carbon brushes might be worn?
    There is a lot of black on the back of the machine beside the pulley for the belt beside the motor.
    Are these worth replacing or is a new machine a better idea?

    As the man says, the belt is unlikely to slip unless there's an excessive load on the drum due to bearing failure. Bearings is the first place to look. Assuming they can be gotten at, they aren't that expensive. (Says he who's determined not to let his hoover dryer breakdowns overcome him: last fix was a heating relay on the pcb costing €2.50 online..)

    If the brushes were worn the motor would not turn at all, the only reason that the new belt is slipping is that it is not tight enough between the drive pulley of the motor and the pulley wheel attached to the rear of the drum. Hoover wash motors are not adjustable for years back unless its as old as their Logic or AC series, those motors were adjustable but they are 15-20+ years old now. Check the drum pulley wheel thoroughly for hairline cracks as it could buckle under load allowing slippage. The fact you put in a new belt eliminates belt problem .

    Put old belt back on and got 3 washes done before it went again.
    Got someone to look at it, it was the brushes alright. (50 euro for new brushes)
    They are worn right down, there is black dust everywhere, the pulley is almost black....
    The missus decided not worth getting it fixed so we are getting a new one today.
