Hi all,
Vanilla are planning an update to the site on April 24th (next Wednesday). It is a major PHP8 update which is expected to boost performance across the site. The site will be down from 7pm and it is expected to take about an hour to complete. We appreciate your patience during the update.

RDF possibilities in Australian Defence Forces

    If your'e a Sergeant in the RDF, you can join the Australian Defence Forces for a short time.

    Anyone do this or know anyone that has?

    I'm not sure which. I just know from looking at their website that if youre at least rank of sergeant in your countries reserves you can serve over there.

    It says you must be released from reserve service to be allowed do it.

    I know.

    I'm asking if anyone here has done it, or if anyone here knows anyone that has done it.

    Also, in answer to a previous question that I didn't know the answer to, it is a LATERAL TRANSFER, that I am asking about.

    i know that you can't serve for 'a short time'. you'll be emigrating, permanently, and you'll be a member of the ADF and entirely subject to their minimum service requirements.

    you won't be going for a year and then coming back with a tan and a disdain for the RDF.

    it may be that you knew that, but its not clear in your post.

    From what I read it seems you need to have a specialist skill that they are looking for...
    The Australian Army is currently seeking applications from Non Commissioned Officers with these skills.

    another important criteria is....
    and have completed relevant specialist Defence Force training courses and experience equivalent to at least 3 years full-time study, so that the nominee is fully qualified for employment in the occupation in which they have been nominated within Army

    And the only mention of being in the reserve is when you leave the PDF they want proof that you also don't have any RDF commitments...

    I am not asking for the criteria etc. I can read that in the link I put up. I'm wondering has anyone here done it, or knows anyone that has.

    I know that. I'm just looking to chat to someone thats done this, not pack my bags and set sail for aus and their reserves. Just looking for a bit of info on it is all :) I know a couple of guys in the reserves who have said that they heard about some sort of transfer you can do with the australian reserves and after looking into it on their site I'm looking to see if anyone has done it.

    Years ago, I read an article in An Cosantoir where a Corporal from the FCA was out in Australia for a while and managed to do just that. He ended up leading a section and taking part in a helicopter assault landing, out in the bush. But that would have been back in the eighties.

    I don't know of anyone else.

    You need to be a citizen, have permanent residency, or have a skill that the ADF needs and is willing to give you sponsorship for before you can get into the reserves here. A lateral transfer is very unlikely, and in any case the ADF is actively seeking to recruit already experienced soldiers from the BA and US Army, so you'd have alot of trouble trying to get in coming from the RDF.
