    Stratosphere is a dive.

Only fly to Vegas through Heathrow or Gatwick with BA/Virgin. The American Carriers stopping over in the US makes for an awful trip.

We flew with Delta from Dublin to San Fran, and from Vegas back to Dublin, stopping off in Atlanta both times - no issues at all with the trip, compared to flying with BA. Plus the pre-clearance is handy. It was only EUR290 each at the time (5 years ago, I think), which was great value.

its better to go through london but going through US is fine as long as stopover isnt ridiculous(4hrs plus for me). Even if sometimes it is, its not end of world usually some good restaurants and bars to kill the time on the way over if you can get the price right for the flight.

Usually i pay around roughly 500e for a flight, have got it as low as 300e once and the highest ive paid is 600e, just book in advance and be flexible. All at various times of the year.

    Why do you say this?
I had a stop over in JFK before to Los Angeles and found it hassle free.

Reason is becuase the internal US leg tends to be on a cramped plane. Plus stopover is often in excess of four hours.

Thanks, I'll know better the next time!!!! First time posting a 'bargain' and it's not even a bargain!!!!

Thanks for posting, purplecow. I hope if you come across something you think is a bargain you will post it up here again.

The onboard food with Jet Blue leaves a lot to be desired, considering the treatment you would get on a similar length flight with say Aer Lingus!

Great to hear flights to Vegas can be gotten so cheaply, must keep an eye out although my holidays aren't very flexible so guess I miss out really on those bargains!

How long is a piece of string! Ive been to Vegas as a student when I was on J1 and had an amazing time on a tight budget. Equally ive been a few times in the past couple of years with a decent amount of cash in my pocket and had a spectacular time.
Great deals on Booze and gambling in old vegas, you can have a really great night down there for very little, you just need to get a taxi there and back from the strip. Similarly O'Sheas and Casino Royale on the strip offer cheap drinks and gambling. Some of the buffets offer great value and if you are doing any gambling dont be afraid to be cheeky and ask for buffet comps. I received comps twice, Flamingo and Luxor.

I really disagree with people who recommend flying via the UK - landing into the US from Ireland has the value of being pre-cleared with customs which can save hours. I certainly recommend shopping around to find flights with decent layovers and decent-size planes (avoid CRJ-200s!) but overall the shortest travel time is generally found by going west first. I also find it miserably unpleasant negotiating Heathrow after an overnight flight from the US - it's much better to land directly in Dublin.

I can vouch for the Stratosphere even though its been 17 years since i was last there.

I go every year and generally layover in Philly. I'm trying a new route this time aer lingus to California and then another hours flight to Vegas. Coming in at €507 flights.

Vouch for it been a dump or good?

As people have said you can do Vegas as cheap or as dear as you want, plenty of ways to cheap it up while still having great time and obv you can spend any amount you wish upwards.

A grand for a week would go a long way inc a show food some shopping a small bit of gambling and moderate drinking.

    What date is that for?

Seems like all the dates in October, Momondo is where it is.

Don't stay in the Stratosphere FFS. Go pretty much once a year for at least 7 days per trip and wouldn't stay there if you paid me. There's nowhere in the world cheaper to stay in a genuine 5* than in Vegas, it's worth splashing out a little. Go with Hotwire and get a room in the Vdara for about €100/night...

I always find booking Vegas as a package on ebookers or expedia works out to be the cheapest! Staying in the MGM for 10 nights in september, flying with Delta with ca. 90 mins stopover in Atlanta both ways and it only cost €800 pp. If you shop around long enough in advance there's plenty of value to be found

anywhere from 500-2000 is my budget

I mean that budget is fine but it depends how long you want to stay.

How you want to eat, drink and gamble.

Doing Vegas relatively right means about $50 ticket for a good DJ....$30 to skip a huge line and $10 a drink inside.

A good dinner will be $70+.

There is a cheap side to Vegas aswell so it really is what you make it. You can probably have a very good time over there for a week with $2000 if you dont gamble.

I dont think you can cooment on a hotel you have not set foot in with 17 years. You would have no idea of the potential alternatives now. I simply would not stay either side of NYNY or The Wynn.

Good dinner can certainly be had for way less than $70. That's a little misleading.

You can certainly pay $70 and a lot more and. Get some fantastic food but you can pay less than half that and eat well.

Agreed, as said it can be as cheap or as dear as you want for eg cheesecake factory steak is twenty bucks, loads of options around that price, if ou want cheaper you can do buffets, fast food or diners.

You can also drink for practically free if you want but on other hand you can pay 40bucks a drink in a club.

The point is, there are loads of ways of doing Vegas, all as equally enjoyable as the others and it doesn't need to be expensive but if you have the money by all means you are catered for.

Ya see I wont deny what your saying but it really depends on your definition of good.

Can you give me an example of where you can eat a good meal for less than $70 in your opinion?

upstairs beside the MGM...........that's if you like wendys and panda express. Seriously though, you can eat for nothing there if that's what you want.
I find that hotels are being renovated constantly so if someone says a hotel is crap but its 10 years since they stayed, it may have been gutted in the meantime. I found that with the Tropicana, brother said it was crap however when we got there it was brand new again. And cost about €25 a night for the room I think.

I know you can get good buffets and the likes for very cheap. I said it once and I will say it again a relatively decent restaurant will set you back what I said. We could argue for the day really and it is pointless.

The best comment is you can do Vegas at any price. I personally dont recommend doing it on the cheap.

Dinner in the cheese cake factory (ceasers palace) is delicious and is less than €70.

Stratosphere is OK - its a 3 star hotel. Location not great, but express bus is outside that takes you up and down the strip. Don;t worry about what people call "down and outs". Law enforcement is very strong in Vegas, so whilst they may not be attractive to look at, they tend not to annoy people - far worse are the guys trying to sell you tickets all over the main tourist areas.

Hotel prices - high at weekends, very high when a big convention is in town. Great rates can be had Sunday to Thursday if no convention is there - we got spa suite in Monte Carlo for under $80 a night in February last.

Definitely join the reward programmes - they operate on how much you gamble rather than how much you win/lose. We "gambled" about $70,000* however our net loss was under $400 and we were comped over $500 of room charge and food and drink.

*To understand this, it is the amount of play you have that counts. If you put $100 into a machine and each play costs $2, then based on a 90% payout the $100 will give you $1000 of play. The machines will give loads of $2-$20 wins, so your balance will go up and down, but rarely will go up to a level that will entice you to cash out, so you tend to continue playing until either the $100 is all gone or until you have brought it up to $300+. (yep - I used to work in that industry and will never play to win cos I know I have little chance against the programmed machines)

One other thing - say you leave a machine and you see someone start playing after you left and they suddenly get a big win - you did not miss that win. The machine knows you left and know a new player has started and re-programmes itself to reflect that. Technology in these machines nowadays is unbelievable.

yeah the trop had a massive overhaul a few years ago, it would now be where I would book, if I was looking at the likes of the stratosphere pricing etc, as it wont be much more, but is different league, then you move up a price point to the likes of the mgm etc, then its up again for the aria, bellagio etc...

Grand Luxe Cafe, Mon Ami Gabi, Toby Keith's in Harrahs, Hash House A Go Go, The Peppermill, Twin Peaks. That's one half of one side of the strip for a start, there's dozens more.
