dead right:) It would take about just over half a football pitch in real scale :)

I'm stuck..all the insignia white and deck tan are sold out all over ireland and the UK..so i'm screwed for base coat until theyre restocked..Im told i can mix vallejo model air 045 stone grey and flat white for the same effect..i wonder..got it primed though..

Where's the best place to buy those Bandai figurine kits?

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 5,380 Mod ✭✭✭✭Optimus Prime

I used to buy them from Hobby link japan, but bandai have now told those Japanese websites not to sell them internationally. Bandai have the rights to star wars kits in japan and i believe its revell in europe?

So now i get mine off Ebay, mostly still from Japanese sellers, just not from the online shops now unfortunately.

Looks great! how did you get on using the airbrush? Ive yet to try mine, i started building one of my bandai kits i got to practice on before the falcon. I just built it up into pieces that will be easy to spray the primer onto. ill probably do that the weekend, Here is a couple of pics..

i wont be using that base as its complete pants.ill make my own.

    atst1.jpg

Built mid section without the extra bits so i can prime it properly.

    atst2.jpg

    Built up legs

    atst3.jpg

    some of the cockpit

    atst4.jpg

The detail on these bandai kits, for being so small is amazing and the way to go together is unbelievable.

I put them away into different containers for now and ill prime the weekend if its not raining.

    atst5.jpg

Just to keep it on topic of the falcon too.. to give you a comparison to your pic with the earphone in it.. this is the parts for the Deagostini falcon so far not including the cockpit ive already built. Im on issue 53 so just over half of the parts here. They are all stored in two big containers at the minute.

Thats mad OP! there's so much to that kit!!

Yeah the airbrush is ok! i had a bit of a disaster yesterday. I used a red enamel paint that dried out far too bright as well as being enamel, so decided to take it off..bad idea
    attachment.php?attachmentid=584998&d=1454260646

got it fixed but it took some work. Im sorta stuck now, the airbruh would need a lot more practice apart from primer and base coat, than i currently have so i think i might end up hand painting it. but no decision yet ill just take it slowly. Laughable given you could probably build this kit in an hour or two if you sat down to it..

The ATST looks brilliant!! bandai have really nailed all these kits so far!! everyone seems excited about Dragon also getting a star wars licence..theyll have a hard time topping bandais work so far!

wow at least you got it cleaned up, im dying to have a go of the airbrush. My plan in my head anyways for the ATST is

    1. - Use a dremel to make the blaster mark on the front of the cockpit instead of using the decal
    2. - Prime everything with Tamiya Grey surface primer
    3. - Preshade along panel lanes with Vallejo German Grey from the airbrush
    4. - Base coat with a grey ATST colour
    5. - Paint the inside of the cockpit by hand
6 - seal with a coat of varnish
7 - Give it a wash using oil paint to make it a bit dirty
8 - seal that with another coat of varnish when the oil drys
9- do some more weathering and chipping
10 - final coat of varnish
    11 - build a base

now, how that works out we will see haha

You have a detailed plan. That at least is a great start. I'm having no luck with this build at all. Masked it all off last night with tamiya tape and sprayed the red panels. Knew it was going wrong as I was doing it. Tamiya thinners do NOT work with Humbrol paint. There's a tip for you. The paint was splitting if that makes sense? And the result came out more like a peuce pink than a red and because it split wen it dried and I took the tape off, it had leaked all around into neighbouring panel lines. Had to hand paint them off with the base coat.

I don't think airbrushing is for me but I'll keep at it.

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 5,380 Mod ✭✭✭✭Optimus Prime

was it humbrol enamel paint you used with Taimya Acrylic thinner? You dont seem to be having any luck with it but thats why i went and bought these ones to practice on before the falcon, so i dont really mind if i mess up its a learning experience i guess!

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 7,611 ✭✭✭david75

No it was an acrylic..no idea what happened..learning as I go it seems..I have an old Ertl Falcon kit(the 18" one)..might start that & get all these mistakes out on that..though it's the tiny scale of the bandai thats really screwing me up.

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 5,380 Mod ✭✭✭✭Optimus Prime

Weird, guess they just dont mix, ill have to keep that in mind and only use same brand thinners on with each other. good to know.

I cant believe how small they are, ive watched a good few youtube videos with guys painting these bandai kits, but even in those videos they dont look as small as they actually are.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 7,611 ✭✭✭david75

Really really small..i have no idea how people are successfully airbrushing these at such small levels of detail..

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 5,380 Mod ✭✭✭✭Optimus Prime

The videos ive seen they normally paint the details on with a brush. eg the cockpit on the atst etc. even the weathering is done with a brush, only the priming\pre shading\base coats and some blaster marks etc are done with the airbrush.

Just about to say i'm getting pretty good at this, then the words Great kid, don't get cocky popped into my head

just to give you lads an idea of the level of detail Bandai went to on this model, heres an engine insert from the underside of the falcon, with an earphone for scale..

Build hasn't changed since last update. Bought a few more paints and equipment. I've now finished painting all my attic so just need to varnish skirting etc then I can get carpet and furniture and start building and painting. I need to break out my airbrush to continue the atst but can't do that until the attic room is finished.

Yours is looking great though ! Nice work.

Updated attic pics. i know its not related to the thread but getting started proper on the falcon will happen when im have this finished.

all part of the same mission :) you'll get there:)

chickened out of lighting my Falcon..it's just too small for my zero skills at LEDS and fibre optics, so i have an 18 inch ertl falcon still in a box so i might sharpen my teeth on that first:)

Hi, long time since i posted an update here, my attic is just about finished, i have furniture etc in and i have most things unpacked. ill be getting stuck into the falcon in a week or so!

I have my desk mostly setup and read to go.. and ive started on the ATST practice kit i bought, pic below. Ive put a primer coat on it and just done the pre-shading last night before it will get its base coat.

Put the base coat on last night, its hard to get a photo of the exact colour because of the lights in my attic being warm glow, think ill change them. anyways i think it turned out ok, i just put light coats on so some of the pre-shading is still coming through. My first attempt at it, i think i could have done better with the pre-shading and the amount i used and where, but sure its a test kit before the falcon.

    atst.jpg

    atst2.jpg

Next im going to paint the inside of the ATST cockpit, with a brush, which will be interesting as its tiny. Then ill varnish the lot and start weathering.
