Geting a blood/PSA test?

    Quick one, my oul fellow passed away from prostate cancer a few years back and its always been in the back of my mind to go to the doc and get checked out.

    Do I just go and ask for a blood test and have them check PSA levels? Im 39 if that's useful, just wasn't sure if they would deem that too young or...

    I am 58. Get my bloods done every 6 months. One of the tests include the PSA. I get the full physical exam done every 2 years. Health insurance covers it. Peace of mind and all that. Just ask your GP to order some blood tests. The results will be sent to him/her and take it from there.

    I think PSA is part of many common lab blood tests. I had to get blood tests for an unrelated thing a while back and PSAs came back as part of the results.

    I think 50 is the recommended age to start getting regular tests. At least that's what my dad told me after contracting it. (He's fine thankfully, caught it very early).

    Just be mindful that PSA levels alone should not be relied on. They can show elevated levels but not always. These blood tests really need to be part of an overall health check which includes the full physical examination.

    The doctor will need to physically check the prostate gland. You get a quick finger up the bum and it's over in a few seconds. It's not as bad as it sounds and a hell of a lot better than the alternative.

    Finger in the bum. I think the idea of it is a lot worse than the reality.
    After the first time you'll be grand.
