What type of phrase is 'living at home'?

My Spanish friend who came to learn English here in Ireland was confused by that statement. The teacher was saying "It's a bit unusual for someone to be still living at home at 24". He took it literally and asked "Where else would they live?". I know the phrase means "with your parents". Is it considered a metaphor/simile?
