have old 1150 socket, and to say the least i7 for 4th gen are crazy expensive so gotten on the way, 1240 xeon v3, its 4 core 8 thread, 3.4ghz and boost up to 3.8ghz.

Question thou is it enough to run some new games like gta5,BF,PUBG at max 1080p settings if paired with right gpu, as not to get bottleneck from cpu.

Also any advice on 200-250e gpu to look for.thx

I still have a 4790k paired with a GTX 1080, and plays everything @1080p without problems

Maybe take a look around for a 4790k, it can be gotten for around €200 as the single core performance will be much better than the Xeon

    *edit*

found one on adverts.ie for €220 and maybe you could haggle the price down a bit

the cpu is on its way, i would loved k series just for OC capabilities, but for under 100e had to sacrifice on choice.

    Xeon 4core/8thread CPUs are fine.
I would recommend downloading Intel XTU and try to undervolt it by -100mV, brings temps down by 3-5C.
You can also mess around with the all-core Turbo speeds - might be able to get all 4 cores to boost to 3.8GHz.

I would also recommend buying a 120mm/140mm fan tower cooler - the stock Xeon cooler's not great, and its clips broke on mine so it didn't cool at all.

    Regarding GPU, get a twin-fan GTX 1660.

Didn't think much about cooler i got stock one now on my g3250smth 3.2ghz OCed at 3.8ghz running stable for years now, 60-70c max at loads, so could this be a problem ? as figured socket same shouldn't be much difference. Thou do get that different layout and extra cores could be an issue regarding heat spread.

Stock cooler will be fine. You can get 2nd hand i7-4790 for €130 from CEX. Known for selling dead CPU's on occassion as they don't test them but worst case scenario you get a refund.

Intel stock cooler is an abomination & should be replaced as soon as funds allow! :pac:

im getting it of ebay so theres paypal protection, as far as i know person used to run it at 3.8Ghz.
Im not mad on gaming but do like to spend few hours when can, also looking to run virtual box for linux, or go dual boot personally myself.

I run bigger and badder v3 Xeons (Haswell), there are games where single core performance is likely to be a limiter but not massively. If you're not all about gaming the 1240 is fine.

I'd still suggest to invest a couple of quid into a cheap cooler - even the lowly Arctic Freezer 11 LP (£13.99 on Amazon) is 12C cooler & runs quieter than Intel stock.

Got cpu- def intel sucks took me prob 30 minutes to slap back cooler on, as few clips didnt want to go down easy.

anyway temps are quite good on idle its around 37-40c on intel tuning utility doing stress test barely broke out of 70c range.

now checking on other msi command center app, i can see 4 cores 2 have multiplier set to 38, one to 37 and last core to 36.
So it seems 38 is like reserved for short term boost and on stress test it maxed out at 36.

So wonder should i try to increase multiplier in the bios to get 3.8ghz as default on all cores, more like is there any point doing so ?

as next step is getting better gpu in next weeks.

You wont be able to change the multiplier.

  • Registered Users Posts: 18,694 ✭✭✭✭K.O.Kiki

Depends on motherboard; some of them did allow that.
But most important is undervolting IMHO.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,739 ✭✭✭scamalert

ok did offest it by -0.100Mv , and yes while i can enter multiplier in per each core, but once press to apply settings the cores 2 default to x38, and x37 x36, in other words its cpu locked.

doing short stress thou i can see approx 12c drop around 58-60 as opposed to 70-72 max before offset. edit closer to what you mentioned b4 K.O.Kiki about 5-6c drop and on idle its more under 35c on all cores so 3-5c drop.

also is it worth touching ring core ? as left that one alone to auto.

    thx.

  • Registered Users Posts: 18,694 ✭✭✭✭K.O.Kiki

Nah I'd just leave it at that, you can try undervolting more but it's a hassle to get stable if you go too low (won't damage it but might have to reset BIOS)
If you want better temps still, upgrade the cooler :)

I'm still playing games using an Xeon E3-1231 v3 paired with a GTX 980 4gb card for gaming with no issues.

well im happy with purchase myself, no OC possibilities but to be fair its still enough processing power to this day,as not to break bank on getting new mobo ddr4 etc, as far as upgrades go on lga 1150. Plus that small tip from k.o.ki did indeed help with getting temps down a notch into 30c region, and any aftermarket cooler would prob add good chunk to make it way lower down the line.

not wanting to make new thread, strange issue but if anyone can read dump files any idea could this be related to doing cpu voltage offset, i have gotten BSOD twice now usually either playing games online or streaming videos, screen freezes and buzzing sound until blue screen, after first time ive setup to have mini dump file dropped. Not entirely convinced that offset could be the main issue as seem its pointing to win8 driver and system which is basically windows system.

i do have few errors linking to ralinksystem64.exe in event viewer as its dispalyed as error and that it stopped unexpectedly. But without actual process being named hard to diagnose unless it happens again then might switch to another NIC to see if anything makes difference.
