My understanding is that this service isn’t U.K./Ire specific, it will be a boxing themed service consisting of fights and related programming that DAZN has managed to pick up worldwide rights for and it will operate in all territories that don’t have a local DAZN (aside from China/North Korea etc).

Not sure if there’s room for this tbh, presumably at the end of a queue involving Sky, BT, BoxNation, ITV, these guys are going to be taking the scraps (no pun intended) left over?

    The press release, btw:

Boxing is the early focus, they have EPL ambitions too

A streaming service that is aiming to become a “Netflix of sport” is to expand to 200 countries, including the UK, and is targeting Premier League rights for the British market.

The London-based Dazn, which is owned by the billionaire Sir Leonard Blavatnik, currently operates in nine international markets but the high cost of sports rights driven by Sky and BT has delayed a UK launch.

Dazn, pronounced “Dazone”, is little-known in the UK but it has upset the traditional sports pay-TV model overseas. In December, Dazn secured the rights to Champions League football in Germany from 2021, ending Sky’s two-decade grip. Dazn also has Champions League and Premier League rights in Canada and Japan.

Coming soon from a galaxy far, far away: Disney takes on Netflix in UK

John Skipper, Dazn’s executive chairman and the former president of the sports broadcaster ESPN, told a conference late last year that Premier League rights are key to cracking the UK.

“The UK is a logical Dazn market,” he said. “In terms of the rights in this country, obviously you need Premier League rights, boxing is very important here and tennis is very important here.”

    Yes it's going worldwide @icdg.

These boys I'm very sure will have every intention of buying up premium sporting portfolios from Sky/BT as they become available.

The Netflix of Sport is what they're calling these lads. Interesting to see if they start creating waves in these parts

Eleven Sports called themselves the Netflix of Sports too, and how long did they last? Also had someone with deep (if not quite as deep) pockets backing them, as I recall.

Look, this market is very crowded (Sky, BT, Discovey/Eurosport, Setanta/Premier, Amazon, eir Sport, Racing TV, BoxNation all with slices). Exceptionally crowded comparatively speaking - in most markets one provider has traditionally dominated pay sports. Good luck to DAZN, but they’ll find it tough to break in. Boxing already has BoxNation as a niche provider. As for the EPL, Sky is willing to bet the house on keeping its slice and it would take a knockout bid to oust it. Maybe they could go after Amazon’s slice but one month of the year doesn’t a sustainable model make.

Eleven were only really a niche company. They didn’t really go all in

DAZN have far more behind them (John Skipper the ex ESPN boss for one) and have already made huge strides in countries like Germany and Spain (where they have targeted football rights rather than concentrating on boxing)

It’s €12 a month in Germany and they get pretty much every major football league bar the EPL (which they show in Italy and elsewhere)

I think they know they won’t survive on boxing subs. It’ll be interesting to see if they go for more UK and Irish rights

Premier Sports will be looking over their shoulder.

Eddie Hearn's Matchroom has interests in DAZN and they have all his bouts live that are in the US - Next year Matchroom UK's rights go up for grabs and I bet ya top dollar DAZN miraculously acquires them.

That will be a major kick to Sky's teeth and DAZN won't stop with just Boxing imho.

Canada's DAZN have all English Premier League games live, Germany acquired CL football too.

Sky/BT have a joint monopoly on PL/CL games and these are going to upset the apple cart 100%

    IMHO

Launching now worldwide on Dec. 1st. €2/month initially.
Joshua fight not available here or in the UK

Wonder what else they'll go after here? Would the have any interest in LOI or some GAA

They might go after the EPL rights that Amazon have at the moment.

They have rights to the Pro 14 in some countries so they could go for the UK/Irish rights.

Champions League rights might be an option for Dazn.

There is no discussing or advocating circumventing regional restrictions here
