A&R Marketplace - Arcade and Retro 3D Printing Service

  • 27-10-2015 4:36pm
    #1
    Registered Users Posts: 8,846 ✭✭✭Steve X2

Service Offered: Retro related 3D prints.
    Location: Dublin
    Delivery\Collection\Post : Collection or Post
Cost: Dependant on the print required
Payment Method: Paypal or Cash (will also consider retro trades)
Duration: Dependent on what kind of workload I have or how many prints are in the queue ahead of you(will try to keep it to 5-7 business days but will probably be less).

This is a 3D print service for ARCADE and RETRO related items only.
(which is why it's in the marketplace here).

I'll try to keep the costs as low as I can as this isn't much of a money maker for me, just something I offer to help people out.

At the moment all jobs will be done on a modified Ultimaker 2 Extended printer.
    The build volume is 230mm wide x 225 depth x 315 height.

An up to date list of what printing materials I currently have is available here:
    https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1EQbnVKGaMIFmInSXciIq4IJGGpLWZUROx6wATvgWyFM/edit#gid=1106084536

If you want an automatic quick quote on roughly how much a job is going to cost you can do it on my website below(request a print section):
    http://www.thingsin3d.com/
The site is a bit rough and very much a work in progress, but is functional right now.

Just get the stl or obj file you need printing and upload it there to get a price(or you can PM me here, but that will take longer). The price on the site is only an estimate and I will reply back with the actual cost(not inc postage). It is mostly up to you to check the file is good and printable, but i will check this before it goes in the queue.

In general all parts will be printed with at 100 micron layer height and 20% infill, which results in a nice sturdy high resolution print at a cheaper cost due to less time printing and less material used. Some parts will need to be printed at a higher resolution and/or infill depending on their purpose. I'll let you know what's best when you submit the file.

It's best to be realistic in what you want printed. Have a look at the samples below or on the Thingsin3D site to see what can be printed on this printer. If you want something with very fine details on small parts then you might be disappointed and better served by checking out the Shapeways site. They are a professional print service, but they are super overpriced!

If the part/parts you want require gluing or any advanced post processing it will be up to you to finish that.

    So, what can you print?

Check out the below links for some sample prints and maybe some inspiration:

    Update:

From the second week of April(2016) I'll be able to offer very high resolution 3D prints from a new resin based SLA printer(Formlabs Form 2).
To be honest, I think the resin based prints are going to be for show only, functional parts are still best printed in ABS, PET or one of the stronger variants of PLA. But high res SLA looks fantastic.

Some samples(I don't have the printer yet so obviously not mine, will update with my own when available):

    HQplEvT.jpg
    l2Wyg2y.jpg

Please note, SLA prints will be significantly more expensive than my standard prints(but I'll do my best to keep the price as low as possible).
Please message me as usual and I'll get a quote for you.

    Colours offered:
Clear(more a smoky clear unless you polish it).
    Grey
    Black
    White

    Edit:
Someone printed a magnifying lens using the clear resin on the older Form 1.

    Hey,
I think I requested a case for my Turbo Everdrive a while back.
You had printed them up as a test at the time.
If they are all gone at this stage I'd be happy to order one from you.
My Everdrive is the original version of the Hucard shaped device, but I can double check.
I'd love a new battery cover for my Gameboy Light but I have never seen a pattern for one anywhere!

I have a bunch of those turbo everdrive cases. I just didnt get around to posting any of free ones i offered :)
If you can collect, you can grab one or 3 from the house. I'm in the middle of planning and moving house at the moment, but I'll still be in dublin.

I'm not sure when I'll be in that way, but I'll let you know via PM if that's ok.
I'm using my TG-16 again and, boy, does that Turbo Everdrive feel vulnerable!

    Sure, let me know.
Maybe in a few weeks when I'm settled in the new house I can be a bit more organised and get something posted off.

Also, I plan to print one of those Turbo Everdrive covers in clear resin and polish it up as clear as I can get it. Go for that 90's transparent tech look :)

Can you give me a guesstimate for printing one of these up Steve?
    http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1040242
    They recommend:
I suggest printing like this to keep the outside pretty and print at 101-102% size for perfect fit!

    Bottom Half: Bottom up
    Top half: Top up
    Front: Controller connectors up
    you will need 4 spacers

How's the replicator printer working out for you?

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,846 ✭✭✭Steve X2

It would depend on the resolution you want it at. I'd say medium resolution, to print everything it would take about 15-18 hours(and maybe 2 days at high resolution). I'd need to work out the cost/time etc.

But to be honest its a bad model(scale is wrong on some parts so would need a bit of work), only 1 make on thingiverse and its a year on there as well.
I'd say you'd need this printed at very high resolution anyway to make it look half decent with the layer changes, and that would be pricey.

Someone printed at medium res and it looks, well, crap :)

Haven't posted any samples in ages.
Here's a few things I printed over the last 2 days.

The castle was a test, its meant to be printed very large, but I went 20%(about 100mm tall) and lost a lot of the small details in the process. Next time I'll go large and see how she looks :)

Bugger, probably another no-go then. :( Was looking for a decent RPi2 case that was retro-console themed, the majority of SNES ones were the horrible NTSC-poor-attempt-at-a-decepticon-rip-off version of the SNES.

If you were looking for a NES themed one there seems to be much better options for that on thingiverse.

Love the little aa and aaa battery dispensers, would they be expensive to print and post? Such a simple thing but so useful.

Oh well, give me an easy life and a peaceful death.

    Sorry, just spotted this now.
I'll price it up, but it shouldnt be too bad, depends on the resolution you want really as the material costs isnt much. Lower resolution = quicker print time = cheaper cost etc.
    will post the price tomorrow

    Hey Steve!

Would I be able to commission you for printing transparent button caps and light pipes for the Sega Mega Drive synthesizer I'm building? :)

Everything you need to know plus the .stl files are in the "3D printed Items" on this wiki page, it should jump to that section automatically.

    http://wiki.midibox.org/doku.php?id=mbqg_fp#d_printed_items

Let me know what you think about the fill rate, and plastic material suggested.

There's no rush on this, as I have to order more parts but I said I'd give you as much notice as possible.

    Cheers!

I can't access the stl files. You'll need to download them and tell me what you want, i'm not reading through all that :)

My apologies Steve. Please find the stl files attached.

I'm looking for 140 buttons and 52 led pipes as per the filenames.

Here is the paragraph relevant to you:

The scale in the STL files is 1 INCH, not 1 mm. The buttons should be about 1/2" or 12mm wide. (This is not intended as an engineering dimension, just as a sanity check - use the actual dimensions in the file.)
Either ABS or PLA transparent filament should work. I had the guy who made them for me do tests with both, and I liked the light-up appearance of the ABS better but the "off" appearance of the PLA better. But they were pretty similar.
I had the guy who made them for me do tests with different fill rates, and if I remember correctly around 10% fill worked best. 100% fill would be needlessly expensive and would dim the LEDs.
The buttons need to be printed with the flanges and the cutout down, and the beveled rectangular surface up. The LED pipes need to be printed with the flat surface down and the crown-shaped end up.

Steve, could you print a Dark Souls ring?
There's some online I see and I'm wondering if you could do the same.
    They are metal afaik...

Sorry guys, been crazy busy the last little while. I'm working with a 3D printer company now (a startup with just one printer on the market). So I am still very much focused on the printing (and designing a new printer from scratch) :)

    @eddhorse
    No problem, can do :)

    @CiDeRmAn
If you can link me to the file you need printed and its doable no probs.
Check out Thingiverse.com, myminifactory.com and yeggi.com searches through loads of 3d file sites for you.

    What about something like this
    http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1543005
I reckon I could paint it up to look authentic, maybe drill a hole in the base and make an Estus lamp out of it, depending on the scale, of course.

At full size(164mm tall), but medium resolution that would be a 12 hour print(or 24 hours at high). The model itself is fine as i just checked it.

I'd recommend scaling it down a bit and going somewhere in between medium and high resolution to save some money/time on it. I think i have a translucent green material that would look help with the look.

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,846 ✭✭✭Steve X2

    @CiDeRmAn
I was curious, so did a 60mm tall version :)
It looks ok, the details would be better when printed larger. And maybe your paint job would improve it even more.

    BzrvG43.jpg

    Edit:
And I got curiousererer and did a 100mm tall one.

Looking again at trying to get a nice looking Pi 2 case, and found this one:

    https://cults3d.com/en/gadget/han-solo-in-carbonite-raspberry-pi-2-b-case

Any thoughts on the cost/feasibility of that one?

Sorry for the delay, been in and out of the country the last while.

That looks ok to print, I'll check out the files and see what the story is with it. If you still want it I can price it up.

Decided to try out that case for myself.
It's a nice idea but those hands are super fragile. Finished print needs a little cleanup and slight sanding, but I cant be arsed :)

Any idea what it'd cost to get one done up Steve? How's it for fit for a Pi?

It fits fine, it's not a great case to be honest apart from the interesting look of the top panel. Maybe a bit of paint would elevate it a little. But the hands will break very quickly.
The way the top section has to be printed is cumbersome and awkward and makes the underside a bit ugly.

I still think you are better off with a good clean case. Something like below maybe.
    https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:922740
    DSC_0007_preview_featured.JPG

    Or

    https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1810943
    9acf928a602580321bb776a289aea693_preview_featured.JPG

I could probably do a normal case for say 15 euro if its just the one(price would drop for multiples). The Han Solo one needs to be printed with lots of supports(more plastic than the case itself) and high resolution on the top to bring out the detail. I'd say 20 for that.

You could definitely buy a mass produced one for cheaper on Amazon or eBay.

Have you ever given thought to 3D printing a Super Nintendo/Super Famicom 'wider' cart slot? I've seen a few people mentioning it online but no product seems to be out yet unfortunately.

    Something like this;

    Just the grey part really;
