Ballina desperately needs a ring road, gridlocked on a regular basis.

Agreed. The road layout in the town is terrible, even some minor change's to flow direction would help. Ballinas' connection to the rest of the country is shocking.

Coca Cola and Hollister in Ballina send a lot of freight via rail to North Wall. Agree though that Ballina is very cut off with the road infrastructure into it.

The Castlebar - Belmullet road is indeed a disgrace and very dangerous but I’m sure there are 100s of projects around the country on waiting lists..

Interesting a public consultation takes place next week on a new road from knock to Colloney...? I would think Curry up to the roundabout at collloney is what is required.

Hollister send no freight via rail.

Improvements to the existing N17 Knock to Collooney national primary route, have been established in the Governments National Development Plan as a potential means of improving regional accessibility along the Atlantic Economic Corridor and to the north-west of Ireland.

The Design and Project Management of the project, which has recently commenced, is being led by the Sligo National Roads Project Office on behalf of both Mayo and Sligo County Council’s.

And a bigger push in Jan. Few of my mates are finishing up a project else where and moving on the N5 then later in Jan.

Definitely going ahead anyway which is excellent.

    https://www.midwestradio.ie/index.php/news/35648-56m-allocated-to-national-roads-in-mayo-for-2020-as-part-of-tii-s-budget
Funding of over €56 million is being allocated for national roads in Co Mayo for 2020.

This includes an allocation of €40 million for the new N5 Westport to Turlough road.

Transport Infrastructure Ireland's budget for 2020 allocated €55.3 million for improvement of roads in Mayo and a further €1.3 million for road maintenance.

It also includes an allocation of €2.5 million for the long-awaited new Cloongullane Bridge on the N26 near Foxford, and €100,000 for the Charlestown bypass.

The Minister for Rural & Community Development Michael Ring told Midwest News about the national roads allocation in Mayo for next year.

Is this on top of the 241m or the first installment?

€40m is the 2020 instalment. According to the tender documents the total cost of the N5 is €128m exc VAT. Much less than what was mentioned in the media announcements.

The 240 million in the media might include all the compulsory purchase of land and all the design and environmental and planning fees.

So this N5 road. I was looking at the drawings online from the design stage as it goes near a sister in-law's home house and were chatting about it over the holidays. The website has design and submitted planning drawings but not newer construction drawings. The An Bord Pleanala planning decision removed what they call section D of the road which is the upgrade from Castlebar to Turlough. They approved Section A, B and C which is from Westport to Castlebar and the ring bypass of Castlebar. This whole Westport to Turlough road isn't correct at all. Its Westport to Castlebar and that would have massively reduced the overall cost which is reflected in the price.

A taxi driver in Castlebar told me a few days ago it's starting in February. Not sure if that's correct but it's definitely early 2020.

I read previously that construction will take 2 years.

Q1 2020 for works to start, according to Mayo county council budget for 2020.

Contract period is 36 months, but that is from date contract was signed (29 October 2019). To be honest I can't see construction taking much more than 2 years.

The new version of the Road still terminates west of Castlebar in Turlough E.D. You're right though I've not been able to find an updated map either.

No definite start date, Feb / Mar dependent on ground conditions drying up. Initial dig on what was supposed to be the driest ground didn't give good results. Big diggers and soft ground don't mix well.

Where did they attempt to dig?

The traffic management plan while works are going on will be interesting. Considering it affects every major road out of Castlebar bar the newport one. The delays at bohola were the subject of lots of moaning.

    N5 3 places, the N60 and the N84.

With new road happening likely to be more developments taking place at different locations near or the along route as well over next couple of years, meanwhile old town center remains stuck in the past

Parking in the old Town centre is what's nailing it. Paid parking everywhere and retailers wondering why their businesses are failing. Oh well....
