ISA Dublin Self Help Group Meets Tonight Tue 21.08.2008 @ 2000
    Howdie,

Following on from a very successful National Stuttering Awareness Day on saturday last (18.10.2008), where the importance of Self Help Groups was discussed, here are details for tonights ISA Dublin Self Help Group Meeting.

The ISA (Irish Stammering Association) meeting on the 1st & 3rd tuesday of every month.

Meetings take place from 2000-2200 in Carmichael House, North Brunswick Street, Dublin 7. All are very welcome.

Please read page 3/3 on the following pdf file for a map on how to get there. (located just off Church street) Bus number 83 passes close by.
The nearest Luas Stop is the Four Courts.

    http://www.stammeringireland.ie/Self_Help_Group.pdf

Personally i've found the twice monthly meetings to be very beneficial.
The first hour of the meeting is informal & covers attendees experiences over the last while. Constructive feedback is what I find very beneficial.

The 2nd hour of the meeting is now formal covering role plays eg: phoning the passport offices & asking or being asked some questions.
The above gives members the opportunity to practice techniques & to receive feedback from other attendees in what very quickly becomes a comfort zone.

Meetings of late have small attendances of approx 5-8 but newcomers are very welcome.

The next ISA Dublin Self Help Group Meeting is tonight Tuesday 21.10.2008 @ 2000.

    Best wishes,

    Barry

This thread is to be used solely for Self-Help Groups. Whether its time and location of meetings or whatever it may be, post it here. It means that instead of trolling through the forum for information it's not just in one thread. Any threads created on meetings will be merged into this thread or I'll create a re-direct.

    Thanks! :D

ISA Self-help meeting on tomorrow night Tuesday 4th November at 8:00pm to approx 9:45pm.

The first hour is normally around the table discussion to see how everyone has been speech wise and a new members welcome. For the second hour or 45mins depending on how things go we practise speech techniques or give people the opportunity to talk about what they want. For tomorrow we are plannig on bringing cards with topics on them like "What's your favourite book? Why?", the person will then have to talk about the topic for one minute. It gives the person a chance to either practise a technique they've learned or just talk in an open and secure place. The other members give non-judgemental feedback and advice.

I'm a big supporter of self-help support meetings and I can't stress enough how beneficial the meetings are.

Please note you don't have to stay for the full meeting.

    Hope to see you there.
    Stephen :)

    Thanks Stephen,

I will definitely be making my way down to the meetings in the new year (NY resolutions and all). That card activity where you have to talk about a topic for a minute sounds really interesting.
Just out of interest, what is the average turnout?

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,891 ✭✭✭Stephen P

    No problem.
The average turnout I'm afraid to say is very low, about 4 or 5 people and sometimes only 3.
It would be great to see you there, new members are always welcome. :D

    Hello All!

I am looking for a Dublin-based support group for teenagers who stammer. The only support groups I can find look like they're more for adults.

    Any ideas?

Anyone interested in starting a meeting in Cork?

My housemate has a stutter and would like to join in. I don't but would like to help run it. (I'm hoping to get a place on the Masters in Speech Therapy next year).

    So anyone interested?

    R

This thread is to be used to post any upcoming events, whether it's a conference on stammering/speech disorder, workshop, seminar etc...

The reason is to have a better structure on the forum, so when a user comes to the forum looking for details on any events they can come straight into here instead of trawling through the different threads.

From now on please post your event here, if an event is posted either in a new thread or an existing one it will be moved here. If there's a duplication of an event it may be deleted if it's already advertised in this thread.

For upcoming events already advertised in the forum I will link them in this post, the original post of the event will remain as is.

Please note that information on self help groups will be left in the 'Self-Help Groups Information' thread.

Edit: 28/08/2010 - any posts not related to Upcoming Events will be moved to relevant thread.

Paul...just a thought, would it be possible for you to write up a short report on what was talked about at the self help meeting that's on Thursday? Obviously you wouldn't talk about individuals and what they spoke about. I think it would be good for everyone to hear what is spoken about at the meetings. Only a few lines, about the structure, how many attended, what topics were discussed etc... I plan on doing the same for the Dublin meeting going forward and it would be good if anyone else who attends another self help meeting around the country to do the same. :)

Stephen the Belfast Self-Help Group didn't happen Thursday past as there wasn't a demand for it!!! One guy was studying for exams plus another I had socialised with the Friday before so I think he had seen enough of me!!! :D
I am actually going to change the posting on the British Stammering Association so that it says "meetings are held when there is a demand" or something like that!!!
I get probably on average an email a month from people interested in the group, but out of that we probably get 2 new members a year...some stammerers just don't have the courage to come along...which is sad in a way!!! They've spent the time to find my email address...they've emailed me...they must have an issue...but after replying to them I hear zilch!!
I've been the organiser of the Belfast Self-Help Group for about 4 years now...if I could pass the job on to someone I would...but no one wants it!!! :D
Still I like to have a presence on the BSA website in case someone does need an outlet to talk about stammering issues!!!
I don't think we are helped by the Maguire ones and Starfish ones having their own self-help groups around Northern Ireland...the stammering voice is fragmented...there is division...but people just don't have the time to attend their own speech therapy course group and an "open to all stammerers" self-help group!!!
I would love to see some form of biannual event in Northern Ireland for stammerers of all creeds (Maguire, Starfish, Patmar, NHS therapy) getting together for a few hours in a hotel lobby to have the craic...a massive support group...but the chances of that are slim!!!

Thanks for that Paul and it's a pity the group couldn't meet. It must be very disappointing when you advertise and advertise and only a small number turn up. Don't give up though and I'm sure you won't :)
Hopefully your next meeting will go ahead as planned.

The report for the Dublin Selfhelp meeting on 18th May is now on the ISA website - report

    Date: 18 May 2010

    Report:

There was a good attendance at the meeting, 7 people attended. There was one new face, he came to the meeting after reading the article in the Irish Times health supplement that an ISA member and her daughter had done a couple of weeks ago.

The meeting started with a round-the-table discussion of how everyone has been doing over the last number of weeks. We also introduced ourselves to those who we didn't meet before. It's always good to meet new people who stammer and share experiences with them and hear their experiences. Stephen Paterson spoke about his interview he did on the Stuttering Is Cool podcast, a couple of the members had heard the podcast and thought it was good.

A good discussion started about opening up to children about our stammer. One of the members said he speaks freely to this children about his stammer while another member said he would always try to speak as fluent as possible in front of children because he would be afraid of the reaction he might receive.

There's no evidence to say that children will copy stammering from parents. Even acknowledging a block, "I found that word hard to say and I got stuck" may show the children that it's ok to stutter and nothing to fear. It's often what isn't said that causes more difficulties.

The fourth National Stammering Awareness Day will be held in the Ashling Hotel Parkgate Street Dublin on Saturday the 16th of October 2010.

The NSAD has gone from strength to strength since 2007, the support that you have given the event has been the bedrock for this success.

We are starting to put in place the schedule for the day at present, if any of you have any suggestions or advice as to what you would like to see and hear we would love to hear from you, if you would like to present on the day we would also like to hear from you.

The principle behind the NSAD is to bring all members of the Stammering community to one place once a year to take part in a day which is dedicated to the Awareness of Stammering, to share ideas, to express ourselves, to share our experiences, and most important to unconditionally support each other.

If you have any suggestions, if you want to do a presentation, if you would like to help out on the day, please do not hesitate to contact us.
