Vanilla are planning an update to the site on April 24th (next Wednesday). It is a major PHP8 update which is expected to boost performance across the site. The site will be down from 7pm and it is expected to take about an hour to complete. We appreciate your patience during the update.

Walks near Adare

    Hi,
    Looking at a break for my wife and I, thinking of staying in Dunraven Arms, 2 nights, first weekend in July.

    Can anyone recommend walks that would be within a 20 min or so drive from Adare. Could be hill, mountain, forest walk etc. If hill/mountain ideally a loop & that's relatively easy to follow.

    Was also thinking of staying in Ennistymon & walking around there but want to see what near Adare would offer.

    Somebody mentioned Curraghchase Forest Park & Knockferina trails.

    Adare Walking Tours do guided walks of the village with some history provided from the local guide. I haven't done one but I've heard they're very enjoyable and conducted with fairly small groups. Not sure when they resume but here's a link to them.

    Curraghchase is a forest park with lots of pathways and relatively flat.

    Knockfierna is a hill walk and very manageable for most people.

    If you want something a but more of a challenge head to Ballyhoura or the Galtees

    The 12 o'clock hills near Sixmilebridge is supposed to a nice walk too and not too far from Adare

    There is also a Greenway from Rathkeale towards Kerry - it's ok for walking and cycling but is not a looped walk.

    Curraghchase is easy to get to but they charge in, which is disappointing considering that you only get parking in return. It is a state-owned wood in the middle of nowhere for heaven's sake.

    Knockfierna is a little more tricky to get to, but in half-decent weather, its views are unrivalled in the county, even from the car park.

    "You only get parking in return". Do you just sit in the car when you get there? There has been massive work done in Curraghchase in recent years with miles of woodland trails laid. The charge helps to keep it maintained and also helps to keep out an antisocial element.

    So why is Cratloe in Clare free in. Lough Gur is free in. There are trails in Aherlow in Tipp, Dromore near Ennis, and even Knockfierna. All free in. You surely realise those trails are laid in Curraghchase by Coillte who are already funded by taxpayers. Why take another fiver off people when they have already funded it? Makes very little sense. Would you be in favour of asking people 50c to walk down O'Connell St.? After all, Limerick Council have to maintain all the paths and street furniture.

    Had a lovely, relaxing weekend in Adare. Walked Knockfierna, enjoyed it. Fantastic views, windy as hell at the top!
