If you want to go private, try the Everyman Clinic on Mount Street. Run by Dr. Kelly. Private, discreet and confidential. Will test you for everything bar genital herpes or genital warts (no real testing possible) and answer any questions. Bit expensive but worth it if you need peace of mind.

Dublin's Well Woman Centre offers STI testing for both men and women.

hey i recently went too james for the test and it was very easy, waiting time was massive 5hours or so, but the procedure and everything else was fine.

but i do have 1 question, and that is, does anyone know if they also test for syphilis, i forgot to ask the doctor. Reason I wonder is because they mentioned all the other usual sti's, and theres posters of all of them, but I never saw nor heard syphilis mentioned.

Oh and I have one more complaint, that is the results method they have. They will call you within 2 weeks, if you have caught something, otherwise they dont ring, which means for atleast 2.5weeks im going to be absoloutly craping myself

You should mention that to the doctor when he rings with your results.

Was tested in the STI Clinic in the Regional in Limerick this morning. The wait was 30 mins. You give your details then they ask you some personal questions.

The test itself consisted of a swab (actually 3 swabs, uncomfortable but they are pretty quick about it); two blood samples; and a urine sample. For the urine sample you have to not have urinated in the 4 hours previously.

The test covers: Chlamydia, Gonorrhoea, Trichomonas, Candida, Bacterial Vaginosis, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, Syphilis, HIV, FBC, UTI, Warts, Herpes, NSU (males only), Cervical Smear (Females Only, results take 6-8 weeks). Sounds pretty thorough to me.

Will be calling in again for the results (all clear hopefully) in 10 days

Oh yes, and the test was free

To be honest, I was hoping for a more mature response.

For those who want to know, the IFPA clinic in Cathal Brugha St charges €140 (€50 deposit) for a full STI test by appointment, with a 1-2 week waiting list depending on the time/day you want.

I rang the Mater and got their answering machine which said that tests are done by appointment, are free BUT there is a massive 46 week waiting list....

A new website has been set up that now sells tests for Chlamydia, Gonorrhea and Syphilis. The website is http://www.medicaltestcentre.ie/Sexual_Health/Chlamydia_Tests/ It says that the packaging is discreet.

I have not used this website, it was recommended in an Irish magazine.

It works out to be much better value (and cheaper!!) to get a full test done properly (that will cover all STDs) at private clinic than it does to buy the tree tests for those three diseases...

True, OFDM, but as we all know there will be those people that will refuse to go get tested at a clinic or doctor as they are ashamed to do so or worried about insurance.

At least if they get tested for the most prevalent diseases it might help things.

It's just a suggestion and I would recommend everyone attend either a clinic or doctor to have the tests completed.

Hi guys,

Does anyone have first hand knowledge on how long test results take to come back?

I've searched exhaustively and even asked a clinic who were fairly ambigious about it.

I'm getting tested next week and don't think my nerves could take 10 days wait. I see someone got their test results back in 3 days from Dr Freedman for an extra charge, is this an option as I'd be more tha happy to shell out whatever the extra is as I'm a wreck already and as Tom Petty sang, "The waiting is the hardest part."

Is the James walk-in still running on thursdays? how early would you have to get there before hand if so?

In my school we have SPHE class but all we learn about is eating disorders and alcoholism. Once they gave us a page about STIs but Im still very much in the dark. So cutting straight to the embarrassing chase...If there was no 'exchange of sexual fluids' is it still possible to be infected with things like Chlamydia and Syphillis? Really what im asking is if you ...began having unprotected sex but then realising the HUGE mistake stopped...'half way through'...is there still a big risk of infection??? If you had anything other than Chlamydia would there definitely be symptoms? How long does it need to go untreated before it has serious implications (i.e. infertility)?

If a penis enters a vagina there's an exchange of fluid in the first thrust. There's "pre-cum" coming from the penis and, for want of a better expression, "pussy juice" from the vagina.

It's possible to catch something from just having each other's genital areas touch, condoms won't protect you from pubic lice, crabs and genital warts for instance.

Here's an update on the IFPA Clinic in Cathal Brugha St.

I got the weapon tested last week. The most uncomfortable part of the whole thing was having to listen to a Boyzone album in the waiting room! Apart from that everything was straight-forward.

The doctor (female in my case) calls you in. I assume that as the IFPA doubles as a Well Woman clinic that all the docs are female.

You give a urine sample (you have to make sure you don't urinate for about 4 hours before hand), filling a small bottle.

You have to sign a consent form for the HIV test. You're also told that if you think you've been exposed to HIV infection in the past 3 months that the HIV test may return negative even if you have it, as the blood changes will not have taken place yet. If you think you've been exposed you're advised to get tested again after 3 months and possibly again after 6 months to make sure.

A blood sample is taken (from the arm), which involves the usual unpleasant pinch of the needle as with any other blood sample.

Then it was time to lash the trousers down and lie on the stretcher for the genital swab, which involves a swab (like a q-tip) being partially inserted into the urethral opening. This is slightly uncomfortable but in no way painful.

Another swab of the glans penis is also taken. The swab felt rough so this was a little uncomfortable at first, that is until the doc swabbed a certain spot that was a little arousing. This combined with the fact that it was a woman holding my penis led to a unexpected full-on erection.

What followed was a "Sorry about that" from me and a "Don't worry about it, it happens all the time" from her.

That was the end of the examination. No throat swab was taken, which was something I wasn't looking forward having done anyway.

Results are given two weeks after the test. You can request to have the results not posted to your address. If you give the doctor a phone number she'll call you with the results when she gets them.

Overall it was a pleasant experience, but the wait for the results is proving to be a bit nerve-wrecking...

TCD has a Sexual Health Clinic every Tuesday and Thursday morning in the Health Service for its students (n probably staff too). Costs €10 for the blood tests.

Went to Friedman in Ranelagh last week, thought he was pretty good and professional, didnt enjoy the needle thing being stuck halfway down my cock but its gotta be done - got the all clear yesterday, as the good doctor said i chose well on my backpacking journey:D . I'd reccomend everybody with any doubts to get it done for piece of mind and good health

Hi Anybody who knows Anything about genital warts please give me some advice? Where is the best place to go in Dublin for sti tests. Im kind of broke so St.james might be my only option- has anybody gone to this clinic with genital warts, do they treat you on the day, is it frozen, or can you get cream, do you have tio come back another time for treatment? What about the well woman place? Im so worried about it, not long out of a relationship and think I have got genital wart, pretty sure, so have to go, and have to talk to ex again about it! Please help, is it something that can be treated effectively? Thanks

Where could I go for a STI test in the midlands? Very, very unlikely I've anything but just want to be sure in case I do and it affects my fertility in the future.

All the Well Woman clinics seem to be in the major cities! Do I go privately or to a hospital. Want to avoid the hosptial route as have several friends who work in them!

Does anyone have any info on the HIV tests they do in James's?
I read about the rapid testing kits available in the States that give results in 20 minutes. I'm nearing the twelve week mark and don't know if i can handle waiting two weeks for bloods.

Oh as for the IFPA, yeah they're very quick, the price is a killer but they can usually accomodate you.

I actually did cover up but awoke to find myself being 'interfered with'
Clear for everything except the big one and I'm scared ****less. Had symptoms and everything but hoping it's all in my head.'

Dr Freedman in Ranelagh charges €160 per visit. His number is in the goldenpages. The service is very good and he tests for everything. I booked an appointment the day before and you don’t have to wait hours in a queue. The best thing is you get all the results back within a week and you ring him to get the results.

The quick test costs €40 euro, although will he then charge for the consultation - he will also say you'd better get the blood test to be 100 % sure - i say get them all done and be done with it!

The big one you say, yes hiv is deadly but hep b can be just as deadly in its own way i.e. attacking your liver\cancer etc.
You have symptoms of hiv you say, stop reading the net, it scares people, many common illnesses are symptons of hiv i.e. colds, fevers, athletes foot/fungul infections, thrush, rashes the list goes on and the internet is full of them. Go to the doc and stop worrying, more than likely your fine. Use the net to educate yourself about safe sex and not the aftermath of unprotected sex.

Many of the std's can screw your health up. I learned this, mentally the hard way and its no fun. Cover up boys and girls and get checked if need be, it can be scary the "what if" part but it must be done.

'Thanks Empirix. I think I'll just go to the Baggot St clinic, it's free and all the full tests take a week like Dr. Friedman's.
I never intend being out of control like that again.
Have been to Dr. who says I've no chance. Everyone saying the same. I hope they're all right! Think anxiety is my biggest problem, but seeing someone about that.
Yes I know hepatitis is a risk too, I just suppose there's more treatment and partners can get vaccinated. Sorry to hear you've suffered so much yourself'

It freeks me out when ppl don't want to ware condoms. Ever some times the person I know well, well, we have fights over him not wanting to ware condoms. I love him so I don't want to give him any thing, caz, well, I'm a slut and I may have some thing. It takes three month for HIV to show up. It has alot to do with alchol, I naver had this problum when I smoked hash, but that breings it's own problums.

The Survice for STI is a dicgrace. To atends the free clinic is a 10 to 4 on one day a week and it's over crowed. The Gay clinic is for gay.I brought my str8 friend and he was told he should indentefy himself as gay/bi. Even that clinic is getting full, caz awarens is rising, whitch is good. but the rescorses are not there.
