    Hi all,

I am looking to buy a new home in Galway city. Doughiska seems to have a lot of properties for sale. What is the area like to live in? Is there much social housing?

    Thanks.

There are a few different estates in Doughiska and in my experience the quality varies dramatically.

I used to live in An Fiodan years ago and it was really nice.

You might get better into on the Galway forum. https://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=475

They have a Lidl and Dunnes Stores there so it makes shopping easy.

Its right beside the motorway which gets you on the Motorway going East or South pretty quickly which is nice.
Traffic getting out of Doughiska is a bit **** in the mornings because of the number of the number of commuters going to Parkmore.

Don't buy or rent in Doughiska as it is becoming a ghetto.

The following is a list of the criminal and gang issues in Doughiska:
    • There is a gang of youths which “hang out” around Joyces Supermarket in the Doughiska shopping centre. There are about 18 youths in this gang, ranging in age from 15 to 21 years old, and they have been harassing, intimidating, slandering, assaulting, inciting hatred and violence and physically threatening, customers going into and coming out of Joyces supermarket and going to restaurants / take-aways there. This included innocent members of the general public, including women. Several people have reported criminal incidents to local gardai. The harassment and threats are crimes under Section 10 of the Non Fatal Offences against the Person Act, 1997 and Section 6 of the Public Order Act, 1994, while assault and vandalism is covered by other laws.
    • This gang also congregates on the path beside the playgrounds in Doughiska and they engage in the aforementioned criminal activities there. Many people take this path to do shopping and go to restaurants.
    • Women and young children are particularly vulnerable to attack by this gang. Women are at risk of rape or sexual assault and sexual harassment. While young children are at risk of being bullied, assaulted or worse. People of a different race are also at risk of racist attack by this gang.
    • Some gang members of this gang were banned from Joyces supermarket for various reasons. Shortly after they were banned, the manager of the shop had the tyres of his car slashed. This was clear vandalism and intimidation. Members of this gang were the main suspects in this crime. The “excuse” of no cameras being in the area was used to not prosecute the guilty parties.
    • Illegal drugs are being dealt in the area and Galway city and this gang is involved.
    • Some gang members carry weapons and would be prepared to use them. There is an allegation that some youth showed off a firearm in Merlin Woods school.
    • In May 2019 a disabled man doing his shopping in Joyces supermarket in Doughiska was the subject of intimidation, harassment and physical threats to his life by this gang. Over 10 youths surrounded him. He called the gardai and the matter is “being dealt with” by gardai.
    • In June 2019, a gang of youths from Knocknacarra came over to Doughiska and attacked the gang in Doughiska. Several youths were stabbed in the fight and gardai were called. Arrests were made. The source of the trouble was ongoing tension between the gangs and a controversial rap video on Youtube.
    • During Halloween, this gang in Doughiska threw fireworks at mothers and young children and toddlers last year and the year before and almost caused serious injury and death. Fireworks can explode on impact with the human body, and a few women and children came very close to serious injury. This was outrageous behaviour by this gang in Doughiska. We are advising families to stay away from the playing fields and playground during Halloween this year and into the future.
    • The gang is known to throw rocks at passing cars, vans and cyclists. This could cause serious injury or accidents. Complaints have been made to gardai about this
    • This gang vandalised some dressing rooms for sports players in July 2019.
    • Urinating and defecating in public areas. Risk of disease.
    • There are allegations of racism against this gang
    • I have noted some rap music videos on Youtube made by this gang and others in Galway. There is singing about guns and gangs in these videos. Do we as Galway people really want guns to be used on our streets. I am very interested in what Galway people have to say about this ?
    • The parents of these youths are not taking responsibility for their children. Do they know what their children are doing, where they are at night and what crimes are being committed ? Do the parents care for their children ? should the state intervene in parenting here ? Parental irresponsibility is a big issue here.

I live in Doughiska nearly twenty years , raised my kids here ,love it ,great stuff going on in the community very vibrant ,close to shops ,great bus service. There is a mix of social, rental and private houses . Great woodlands nearby Merlin Woods used by all the locals and tourists aswell. Great community resource centre aswell with different classes such as yoga, dance, language, computers etc... The post about the gangs is not a true reflection of life here , a lot of misinformation and untruths.

Given it's a first post by a user I'd take it with a pinch of salt

Indeed. An interesting tactic: set up accounts to make a seemingly innocent question and a sensationalist reply, then months later use them as alleged "research" in something like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w48d4_IhmoY
