Post here when you buy a new game

Got Yedo, going to give it a spin today. First worker placement type game really, it's been mostly Twilight Struggle and other CDGs up to this.

I'll certainly throw up my thoughts on it if we play it on games night we're having this weekend.

Since I said I'd throw up our experience of the Mansions of Madness game, here's a short summary.

In total there were four of us playing this game for the first time, other than myself no-one had read the rules, that was our first mistake.

To get the game running in a reasonable amount of time means splitting up the set-up into two parts (which in fairness is mentioned in the rules).

The keeper has a mountain of cards to sort out and has to configure up the scenario; Ideally while they are doing this the players should be preparing the map and selecting their characters along with their starting equipment.

Once we got up and running the game moved at a nice brisk pace, the play somewhat like descent.

In terms of play the encounters came quite late in the game, mostly because the investigators keep together and as such didn't encounter the clues until a bit into the game. The game ended with a win for the investigator due to time expiring rather than them actively causing it to happen.

We're going to arrange another get together (have to stick the post up, probably for a few weeks time). But I think we'll probably have a better experience this time since we'll be familiar with the game rules this time.

Overall I was slightly disappointed with the first play, but think that's more down to mistakes on our part than the game itself. The next session though will make things clear.

Ordered Citadels today, was looking for something with a simple set-up (which from what I've read this has).



Hope to give it a go on the next board-game night we've arranged for a few weeks time (hello elderly Drogheda people).

Got Pax Porfiriana after seeing it mentioned on BGG, a card game about the struggle for power in Mexico at the start of the 1900s.

220 cards, of which only 50 + 10 per player are used in a game so you'll not see more than 80 or so in most games, and a very interesting design that intersects building a financial base with scheming your ass off in an attempt to overthrow the dictator Diaz and take his place - you can go for a good old Communist revolution, or try to convince Teddy Roosevelt to invade and annex Mexico, the other options are the military coup or even a free and democratic election, if you're a wuss!
