anywhere in dublin good for second-hand college books? that, or places with good philosophy or politics sections? there is the college bookshop itself, but it tends to be more miss than hit, especially for politics.

The Secret Bookshop beside Tower Records.

Yes, there is one on The Mall. Don't know it's name, sorry.

There are also a few charity shops which have books, too.

    :)

There's Bookmart on The Mall. Prices are mid-range.
Liber used to be good but now it seems to be mostly chick-lit.
I wish there were more in town.

Oxfam opened last year seem to have some books too.

I hope so - they had feck all stock last Sunday.

I'll say it again - you can't beat the charity shops around Dublin town. There's plenty around the Wicklow St/Camden St. area and also Capel St and Liffey St.

A lot of them are overstocked with chick lit though. You have to wade through a lot of rubbish (titles like 'I love my lover who I love a lot') to find something half decent.

Vibes and Scribes near Patrick's Bridge in Cork City actually have a separate shelf for chick lit in their second-hand section. It's a blinding sight with all the bright yellow and pink spines; a handy deterrent! :D

When travelling I once shared a room with a girl who had books with similar titles to that scattered over her bed. I duly took out my Ernest Hemingway and Franz Kafka novels, placed them in an prominent position, and assumed this expression:

Trinity bookshop in Carrick on Shannon is good enough, there's piles and piles of books everywhere so you have to search, got some great books there though!

They pay well enough for some older books aswell, like the old family magazines and stuff.

In a word....Chapters of Parnell St. The best 2nd hand book shop I've ever seen!

All other details about other 2nd hand book shops are on this thread. I personally like Oxfam in Parliament St. - a good selection.

Carrick on Shannon, Co Leitrim: Trinity Rare Books. Has antiquarian/rare books/maps/local history books but also has a good selection of second hand books.

    http://www.iol.ie/~nickk/

The Liber Bookshops on O'Connell Street in Sligo used to do second hand but now sells cheap paperbacks (€4.99) as well as full price books.

The charity shop in the Wine Street Carpark in Sligo also has a small selection of second hand books.

The Bookmart on the Lower Mall in Sligo has a truly excellent selection, great atmosphere and helpful staff.
I spent a lot of time in there over the past three years, including a two weeks' work experience.

I believe there's a shop in Ballymote as well, run by an elderly American couple of Socialist leanings. Not sure if it's still open.

Universal Books in Letterkenny is also pretty nice.

The second hand bookshop in Ballymote, Co. Sligo is still open.

There are also a couple of charity shops now open in Boyle, Co. Roscommon which do books.

There is also a newish second hand bookshop open in Carrick on Shannon, Co. Leitrim, down a laneway beside the Bush Hotel on the Main Street.

There is also a small second hand bookshop at Florence Court House, a National Trust property in Co. Fermanagh.

    :)

    Letterkenny: Universal Books

It's moved to Church Lane now. The guy who runs it is an absolute legend. He tends to randomly give out the tea and buns he gets at the end of the day from the baker next door. :D

Wide range of primary school books..from Irish and Englsh textbooks & workbooks to maths and religion/ History books... Most are second hand but none of the books have actually been used so in excellent condition!! would be ideal not only for the pupil in class but also as an extra resource for grinds or higher/ lower achieving pupils!! A brilliant chance for teachers or parents to get their hands on these books at knock-down prices or before some of these textbooks go out of print! There is a nice little bookshop on main street in Cavan Town, run by a wonderfully eccentric old woman.

Just came across a new secondhand bookshop in the Indoor Market, Clanbrassil St., Dundalk. Called the Loft Bookshop, the proprietor Bryan stocks a nice eclectic mix of books upstairs on the right as you enter from Clanbrassil St. Worth a look.

    Hi,

I'm looking for some advice please. I have a very large collection of Star Trek novels, well over 200 of them and need to sell these as I am emigrating and can no longer hold onto them. I also have a large box of CDs including singles that I would like to sell.

I have already contacted Chapters, Forbidden Planet and Spin Dizzy none of whom are interested, or able to take a collection. I have sent an email to Dan in Trashface and am waiting to hear back. Could anyone who knows please let me know who would be capable of purchasing my collections? Any advice is greatly appreciated but I simply don't have the time to catalogue my collection for the likes of eBay. The books are already listed on adverts.ie but with no bites yet.

    Thanking you all

    Andrew

I'm from Cork myself but I've never ventured into a second hand bookshop. I know of Connoly's. Is it good? What kind of stuff could I hope to find?

  • Have to say I like Chapters, but Charlie Byrne's in Galway is so far superior to any other secondhand bookshop in Ireland its ridiculous. They'll usually take your own overstock for credit too.

Excellent Charity Book shop in Midleton run by St Vincent de Paul. Most books are €1, hardbacks €2 and children's/teenage books only 50c. Very well stocked with a lot of recent releases and all books are sorted by genre. Its off Midleton's main street past "The meeting place" pub and well worth a visit if you are in the area.
