The Mysterious Disappearence of Jennifer Kesse in Florida

I'm not sure this fits within the genre of true crime, but I've recently been reading about the disappearance of Jennifer Kesse in Florida in January 2006. Aged in her early/mid 20s, this lady never showed up for work one morning. She spoke to her boyfriend just before going to sleep the night before at 10pm. However, two phones in her possession were powered off shortly afterwards at 10.30pm and apparently had been pinging in different areas. The prevalent theory is that she was abducted early the following morning, as there was evidence to suggest she got ready for work, including the shower stall being wet, and clothes laid out.

The most bizarre and creepy aspect of the disappearance is that her car was found two days later in a nearby apartment complex. Someone was caught on camera leaving the car at 12 noon on the day she disappeared - there was a close up shot, but the guys face was not revealed.

14 years tomorrow. It truly is a mysterious case. Most recent leads and search was in November 2019

God, there are so many rabbit holes with this one!

Even the fact that they can't be totally sure if she went missing that night or the following morning causes so many issues for the investigation.

The person of interest is so lucky that their face is obscured in the footage of them. An interesting point from the Unconcluded podcast, which is a deep dive into the case and while hit and miss in some ways has a lot of interviews with Jennifer's mother, is that when the FBI recreated the footage every piece of clothing captured by the camera looked white. Jennifer's apartment block was undergoing construction when she went missing and there was a lot of speculation that the person of interest was a painter because it looks like he's wearing overalls, but Jennifer's mother said even the police uniforms turned out looking like that.

True Crime Garage just did a very good 4-part series on the disappearance.

There is considerable debate about the morning versus nighttime theories

While all the evidence points to an early morning abduction, there are two anomalies. Her phones, which she used as an alarm were powered off at 10:4-pm, and her phone started pinging away from her condo, in what police describe as a shady part of town.

The biggest question is why her car was moved to a nearby, and very shady complex, at 12 noon on the day of her abduction.

I've also read (but can't remember where) that when she was on the phone to her boyfriend she said something about there being a knock at her door, and there's a theory that this points to her being abducted that night.

The car thing is such a rabbit hole! Apparently the driver's seat was pushed all the way back, but then the official estimated height of the person in the video is like 5'3"... Depending on when she was taken it is really weird too, if it was that morning it means there is only a window of a few hours between then and her car being dropped off.

Anyone can be a victim of crime so I take this with a pinch of salt, but Jennifer's family have consistently said that she was very safety conscious and would know to crash the car if she was being carjacked, or how to kick out the tail lights of a car from the boot etc., but even if that is the case she could have been drugged or otherwise incapacitated. The fact that nobody heard any screams that night or the morning she was reported missing could tie into that, or just be a consequence of the low occupancy rate of her condo complex meaning there was nobody around to hear anything.

Listened to the True Crime Garage series on this.

You'd have to imagine it was one of the workers on the complex that were involved. Really unlucky not to have picked up the guy from the CCTV or to have got any DNA or fingerprints from the car.

It was the best TCG coverage in a while. Definitely looks like overalls in the footage so it could well be one of the workers, the big issue with that is the lack of proper records and the fact that they could have just left without a trace after she went missing.

The worker/construction theory is the one the family are leaning towards. What has always struck me about the case is the timing of the car being moved - about 12 noon EST. It just seems very odd to move that car in broad day light without a good reason. My guess is that it was moved to deflect from the scene of the crime - either Mosaic or somewhere else. The fact that the blood hound tracked the sent back to the foot of her stairs confirms this theory. If this is true, then she was probably abducted in the early morning hours, and liked dragged into the empty unit across from hers that was unoccupied.

That theory makes most sense, in that it requires the least assumptions. BUT, there are several facts that might indicate a nighttime abduction

First, the ping study that suggests her phone was pinging away from the apartment until shutting off at 10.40pm. Ping studies are unreliable, BUT many people think a night-time theory is more realistic, and if so, it suggests an ex-BF or co-worker rather than a construction worker.

Second, her phone was powered off at approximately 10.40pm and stopped pinging at around the same time. Both her phone and another phone she was to overnight have never been found. The switch off at 10.40pm is nusual because Jennifer used her phone as her alarm.

There is one school of thought that a work colleague has knowledge of her disappearance. That work colleague was reportedly obsessed with Jennifer and contributed very weird messages (such as "keep looking :)) to a Facebook Group in 2012. That person still has a Myspace profile, and all I will say is that it gives me the creeps. It is speculated that he or a close relation of his has information about what happened to Jennifer. It is even speculated that the relation of this co-worker was at one of the first searches in January, 2006.

Has anyone listened to the Fox News podcast on this one? It's called House of Broken Dreams and is a good listen, absolutely heartbreaking though because her parents are interviewed a lot and speak about the impact Jennifer's disappearance has had on them and their lives.

There are a few new strands of inquiry that are maybe a bit dodgy, but one of them is that on review of the notes from the case there are pictures of the front of her car right after it was processed at Huntington on the Green and it looks like there was a struggle against the hood of the car. Not sure if the actual pictures are available anywhere but it's an interesting and horrible detail in terms of establishing what happened to her that day.
