In addition to a software firewall installed on a PC, is there any benefit to add a hardware firewall between the PC and ISP cable connection (that may also include NAT)? If so, what hardware firewalls would you recommend?

Also, it's easy to update software firewalls, but I have heard that updating hardware firewalls may be a bit more difficult. Comments?

hardware firewalls tend to be a bit more resilient as, most, run on a locked down OS that only does firewalling instead of an OS that does everything and then splits off some resources for a firewall service/application.

updating HW firewalls usually involves saving a config file out, booting from the new patched image and then reloading the config and checking for inconsistencies . Other firewalls will let you run a patch by importing a patch file and others will go out and download a patch from the vendor automagically.

I think its terrible that someone called you a firewall appliance.
