No I mean why waste water on a pitch when it is in such short supply...

Water was likely just pulled straight from a stream or river, not potable water or connected to a network. They wouldn't be filling those out of the tap

Any sign of this to break or is it showing dry weather as far as reasonably can be predicted? Situation may get dire for farmers

Showers predicted this weekend but not guaranteed yet. No rain beyond that, still can change

This is more than likely what they are doing. They are hardly waiting for hours for a tap to fill a tank with drinking water and then watering the grass with it. They are doing that with our local field, taking water from the river and watering the pitch. A hard pitch would be dangerous to play on . Its very good of them to take the time to do it,and no,they are not being paid!

Can anyone say what they mean by ‘the greater Dublin area’? I know for the NRA that includes Wicklow, Kildare and Meath. Do Irish Water count it the same?

YR site is predicting rainfall for Sunday across many locations. Rainfall amounts are modest though.

Showers wouldn't even wet the ground.
Several days of rain are probably wanted.

There was a guy watering trees outside the Central Bank today at 1pm. Seemed like the biggest waste of water ever.

So to give a visual example of how high the current water levels are at the Vartry Reservoir in Wicklow... the first photo was taken today. Note the people jumping into the water off the bridge and swimming. The second photo is the same bridge back in January 2017.

I actually can't understand how there is so much water given the recent lack of rain.

    What about a golf course?
There are over 300 golf courses in Ireland using a sh1ttonne of water to keep the greens and fairways green

    Just the greens though.

Common to see fields of potatoes being watered with huge sprinklers in dry weather, comes from streams or rivers though.

There is still a fair bit of water on the Dublin/Wicklow mountains, they got absolutely hammered with rain (and snow) in spring this year. It takes quite a while to drain off due to the boggy terrain. The streams are still flowing quite well, I've seen them much lower even in pretty average summers.

The GFS also usually overdoes showery type rain as well, it's a bit better with organised systems but still on steroids compared to other models.

My lawn is struggling at the moment. It’ll take a fair bit of rain to penetrate the soil at this stage. I haven’t seen any rain here in Dublin 7 since early May.

They use water taken from the canals that would otherwise end up in the Irish Sea so its not a waste.

The levels of water in the roundwood reservoirs are generally 3 or 4 months behind the weather. Winter 2017 was very dry and we didnt get enough rain to replenish the reservoirs so they stayed low. It took until Jan 2018 for the levels to be back up to full. I expect the water levels to not drop low until August.

Gonna need very heavy consistent rainfall to recover from this. A supercell would be epic considering all the weather we've had these last few months but at the same time it would also be extremely dangerous. Never thought I'd see myself wanting a bit of rain in Ireland.

I wonder do all these stations have a perfect horizon so they can follow the sun from rising to setting.

IW talking about having a hosepipe ban enforced with fines of €150.
My car is destroyed in dust but I'd rather not waste water washing it.
A couple of people I know seem proud of the fact that they water their lawns every night despite me telling them that an hour's good rain is better than a week's watering.

Hose pipe ban in place from Monday for the Greater Dublin Area. It's for the entire month of July.

Well I can say that the grass is equally as burnt down here in west cork as the city anyway

how is the hosepipe ban expected to be enforced? Genuine query, I'm not trying to stir.

I heard that people report other people if they believe they are using excessive amounts of water. Heard that on the radio but not 100% sure

I can see a lot of unfriendly neighbours abusing this!
