Driving down the M11 was an experience last night.

Given that my flight landing in DUB about an hour before the drive was similar, I’m hoping Santy will be bringing fresh underwear for Christmas!

No way was there 46mm of rain in Castlebar.

    Newport just had 16mm

My own rain gauge in Sligo had 15mm

Belmullet had 16mm too i think

Unless there was a thunderstorm that missed rest of Ireland

As far as I can see Kerry had 40 to 45mm

    Nowhere else

    It is possible
30 mins on a local squal at say 40mm/hr rain rate would drop 20mm
Happened often in early Nov both here and in waterford
My station totalled 289mm in November in Arklow
Johnstown castle had 223 only 30 miles away whereas from memory Waterford weather another 30 miles from Johnstown had circa 300mm
    stations in between lot less
Weather varies considerably in small areas sometimes

Just going by data at work, a local station reported similar but it's reporting through Weewx so may not be 100% accurate, copy of the report below.

Just checked the met eireann website and it recorded 40 millimeters of rain yesterday (Valentia). Interestingly and somewhat amazingly it only recorded 1.7 millimeters at Sherkin island!!

Also 15.4 mm fell at Valentia from 00 to 05h today so total is about 52 mm. (I think the first 3 mm at 00h go with the 17th data).

Claremorris (re Castlebar) appears to have had 28 mm total in the period where Castlebar reports 48.6. I noticed on the radar after midnight some intense banding through Connacht so any sort of variation quite plausible.

Newport may have reported 15 mm on Monday but has seen another 14 mm since 0100h to give a total of 29 mm.

Quite interesting that Castlebar did seem to get so much rain.
