Update on Cross of Kells CX race for this Sunday, thankfully not a cancellation!

Course Update: New sections cleared in the forest which will make for a faster flowing course with 2 long recovery sections before and after the main grass section. Field area has been moved to run alongside last weeks course.
NOTICE: A race will now start before the B race at 12.45pm with B race at 2pm. Revised schedule will be posted tomorrow once online registration closes at 12 noon.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,902 ✭✭✭woody1

Does that mean it doesn't go back over the sections that got cut up really bad last week.. ?

Thanks to all at Oldcastle for a great event. The new additions and reversed direction made for a much better (in my opinion) lap. Only the one running section, good forest sections and if you had a second bike you got the benefit of it on the next fast section. There was obviously a huge amount of work that went into the two events and so thanks again.

First time up there. Oldcastle put on a great show! Well done folks.

I did the B Race and was probably last over the line. Great course - loved the forest bit and was able to ride most of it except the muddy hill and the ditch where I came off a few times. Brought the wrong tyres and really struggled in the mud sections - dropping places every lap (that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it).

Apologies again to the lad I whacked in the helmet with my bike running through the mud. I would have been less understanding if it was the other way round.

A couple of results for STCC so a good day out.

Apparently it was cancelled due to construction work being carried out down the lower end of the course.

SDCC blitzed the area, locals not happy at all!

Any recommendations on a decent starter CX biek that would be upgradable to something half way decent over time, looking at these two:
    https://www.cyclesuperstore.ie/shop/pc/viewPrd.asp?idproduct=139845
    or
    https://www.cyclesuperstore.ie/shop/pc/viewPrd.asp?idproduct=139839

Is the 1kg in weight difference really worth the price difference, paint job is also nicer on the cheaper one. Any other recommendations welcome.

Edit - If you want to get a few races in this season, I'd pull the trigger quick. PlanetX have some disgruntled customers, FYI - https://ie.trustpilot.com/review/planet-x-bikes.co.uk

No, it's not worth it. Again, you don't want 2x. Agreed re the paint job. If you get up to A you can buy a carbon bike and keep this in the pits

The Alu is the 1X, the carbon is 2x. Benefits there are parts would be easier to swap from my old road bike over to the 2x, but thats not really important.

Looks like I am going Alu then, :D

Just out of curiosity, how come only 1 rider in the B was promoted this week? It was 2 last week.

Are the pics on Bray Wheelers Fb page actually of the course, the steps and ramp etc. Looks awesome and terrifying in equal measure if it is.

The two lads from last week ride the A races in Ulster, we only noticed it when they won by 60 and 90 seconds from 3rd place, so that's why they were promoted.
Cormac was 3rd last week (with improving Supercross Cup B results), so I though it was fair to give him a proper chance at a race win before an upgrade.

I've talked with WORC regarding what they do for promoting. The outcome was that we'll stick to promoting the winner, and offering M50 B riders the option to avoid an upgrade.

    Ah that makes sense.

Its a hard one to manage in fairness. Probably about time there was a points system in place like there is for road and not leave it up to race organisers to police it.

    Would mean a new licence cat. "CX-A" - "CX-B" I guess..

However if someone holds an A1/2 or MTB S1/2 license they are automatically in the A race, S3 MTB Road A3, marginal i'd say.
A4 / S4 can enter either A or B race, with a win meaning an upgrade to the "A Race" for the next race..
Though nothing to stop the winner of a B race from entering another race series again as a "B racer"

I had to read that twice to be sure. Muppets.

OldVelos Response to the Cork Insurance Debacle, but fairplay to Greenmount in Limerick we have a race this Sunday.

    Cork Slows

    Cork Slows.
    For fear of an accident.
    First to go was Tiddly-Winks,
A wink could cut an awful gash we were told.
    That was the first chink.

    Cork Slows.
Next to go were hover boards,
    Roller blades and skates.
A child could rip their clothes, or worse
That would be an awful curse.

    Cork Slows.
    Soon after bicycles
    Were to go
At first it was just races
But then went all events in public places.

    Cork Slows.
    Remember the City Sports?
Now it’s shown on the Arena screen
To weight watcher groups from schoo..
No, wait, the arena is gone too.

    Cork Slows.
Finns corner is a casino now
They push the patrons to the slots.
Across the road was another sports shop
    That’s closed.

    Cork Slows.
    Insurance needed the reassurance
That every injury must be foretold.
Authorities and associations shook their heads
    Public places went dead.

    Take a risk.
What’s worse a bandaged knee or obesity?
Bang the table, demand, then shake hands.
    If we don’t say stop,
Cork not only slows, it stops.

Good craic yesterday, wet and fast. Managed to stay on my bike for most of it as well, hard to tell if running or cycling was faster. Wash bath after the first few turns was great to clear the mud off, so powered through that every time, anyone who ran it or tried to go around the edge regretted it. The Paddy Field over the next section was an exercise in using your shoulders as shock absorbers, there was no good path here. I tended to go really wide and spin like hell. The next two turns were clogged with muck, this was one of the few places running made sense, I rode through it on two laps but the last few laps I ran it. After that it was a nice fast slippy run around the back of the course, great craic power sliding around corners. Little bumps at the end were also fun, just hit them full on and bounce over.

Great craic, no way as technical as last year and in no way as muddy but still great fun.

Question about gear, I have a 175mm crankset on my bike but I prefer 165mm. Am I better getting the Shimano CX specific crankset or will my spare road crankset do, just put on smaller chainrings? ie is there any reason a road crankset would not be suitable?

How are points going to work for the league considering lads will be potentially racing in different races?
