"These markings, made by the inorganic growth of manganese oxide, are not fossils, but look so convincingly like plants that they are often termed "pseudofossils". This particular type is known as a "Dendrite". It formed when an iron and manganese-rich solution percolated down a crack or bedding plane in the sediment and precipitated out the mineral in a characteristic fractal pattern. Ice can grow in a similar pattern on glass"
