It has been mentioned more than once that the Sky deal when first signed was only slightly more valuable to the GAA than the previous TV3 deal.

So the GAA were looking at it from the exposure point of view.
Getting you games on the dominant satellite network in a nation of 50m+ million people during the soccer off season is not trivial,

How that has translated into real interest in the game I don't know and I agree with you that the majority of GAA interest overseas is certainly with the immigrant community and schools.
The South London Feile team a few weeks ago (runners up in the Div1 Cup) is a example of how it has worked in schools.

But the reality is that after the first deal both the GAA and Sky were willing to renew it.
So from a Sky POV they must be seeing the desired economic return in retained subscriptions and from the GAA POV they must have been seeing something from a promotional POV.

The worst case scenario for GAA fans if Sky are not involved in the next deal and Virgin Media get involved and stick them on Virgin Media Sport, a channel that is not very widely available, does not have much content worth watching, and is very expensive relative to what one gets.

I suppose the one positive side is that those gob****es in R.T.E. havent a monopoly on it.

I subscribed to sky sports on the mobile. 7 euro a month just for the Gah over the summer months. The Now TV app actually streams unlike the state broadcasters app. That's decent value. If you are desperate to watch a game and streaming on the phone isint sufficent, go to the nearest pub showing it, have two or three drinks and don't be worrying about it.

I doubt it as they throw in at same time and not listed in Sky schedules

Last year the final games on Saturday were on Sky and the Sunday games on RTE.
RTE showed Donegal v Tyrone on RTE 2 and Dublin v Roscommon on RTE News Now.

I'd be very surprised if Mayo v Donegal was not on Sky

Is the 3rd year of Sky doing GAA? And how many years have they committed to screening GAA matches?

From what I can gather the viewing figures haven't been good - certainly not in GB - and if true would they really want to continue paying for the rights to GAA games?

    I actually think it's their 6th year

I think there is another year to run of this contract.

This is the second contract so obviously both Sky and the GAA were happy in some shape or form with the outcome of the first one.

Whether there will be a third one we will wait and see.

TG4 to show 10 live GAA games across a bumper weekend of action https://the42.ie/4739911

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,066 ✭✭✭manofwisdom

On the Sunday game they confirmed they will be broadcasting next Sunday's games

Tyrone v Dublin on RTE 2
Cork v Roscommon on RTE player

That means as expected Kerry v Meath, Mayo v Donegal will be on Sky on Saturday night.

    TG4 this weekend

    Sat 03.08 1.30pm U20 Hurling Semi-Final – Kilkenny v Cork

    Sat 03.08 3.30pm U20 Football Final – Cork v Dublin

    Sun 04.08 1.15pm U20 Hurling Semi-Final – Tipperary v Wexford

Presumably TG4 will also have coverage of some or all of the Ladies Football 1/4 finals

Camogie 1/4 finals on RTE on Saturday

    TG4 provide some service.

Bar the Kerry-Tyrone game the minor quarter finals were very entertaining.

When will RTE pick up Mike Finnerty as a full time commentator ?

He is streets ahead of the likes of Marty Morrissey and Get Canning.

I'd love to know the viewing figures for Mayo v Donegal on Sky.
If it was on rte it would have been 300k at a minimum.

Putting the best games of your premier competition behind a paywall is not the way to increase interest in the sport and its no wonder interest is dying among neutrals.

Its like the GAA are trying to kill the sport.

    Oh not this s**t again

Last year the deciding game of the quarter finals was on RTE
Just the way the schedule falls.

They are locked into the Sky deal for a few more years, after that they might go back to terrestrial only.

I made a very valid point. The GAA is so badly administered its gone past a joke.

Tomorrows dead rubbers are on terrestrial, todays games which held genuine interest behind a paywall.

What a great way to kill interest. And all entirely predictable.

Whinging on here won't change anything. Have you raised the subject with your local club/county board?

Even less chance of influence with them. They do whatever Croker tells them.
The suits in Croke Park dangle cash and tickets on front of these guys and they toe the line.
